DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't plant surface crops on reclaim
« on: June 19, 2011, 12:03:39 am »
I have picked and brewed a strawberry for its seeds, but still wouldn't let me plant. Underground plants still works though so....I dunno.

However, if you don't deconstruct it, you could eventually have a VERY valuable lever. I'm talking the Lever of Legends here.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't plant surface crops on reclaim
« on: June 17, 2011, 11:56:34 pm »
So I went to reclaim a fortress and it's not letting me grow above ground crops. At all. I was growing them fine before, abandoned the fortress, and now its not letting me build ANY above ground crops. New farm plots don't help. I can still plant subterranean crops fine though. It says no seeds available for this location, but I have PLENTY of unforbidden strawberry and prickle berry seeds.

I know that you can't grow above ground crops on a mountain, but this fort is on a savannah, not a mountain. So is there a work around for this bug or am I going to just have to deal with it?

Of course it doesn't make sense, its perpetual motion. But of ALL THE BUGS AND ISSUES that need fixing....does this even register? I mean, don't we have more important things to worry about like say...I dunno...actually getting your military to wear what they're supposed to wear (I still can't get my dwarves to wear cloaks without taking off their breastplate first, hoods either), or getting the miner to realize that yes, you can use the same pick for mining as you do whoopin ass.

While it can be considered kind of an exploit, I don't see the necessity of removing it. If you're so much against it, just don't use it. Also, remember this, no amount of water wheel/pump exploit fixing will make us want to use windmills. They suck, and that's the BEST case scenario (worst of course, being they won't work at all). Bump windmills up a notch and THEN we can talk. I mean seriously, 40 power from 1 windmill on a good map (or could be 20, or 0, you never know until you build it) and half of that is liable to get eaten just from the gears and axles.

Thanks a million. Time to let the power (and with that, magma) flow!

DF Gameplay Questions / Aquifer as Drains?
« on: June 13, 2011, 06:09:25 pm »
I know that aquifers produce water, but I think they can also drain it yes? The reason I ask is that I have a river and aquifer on my map, and was wondering if I could rig up a power generator with water wheels and simply letting the water from the river go through the system and drain off into the aquifer. Now do I have to physically pump the water INTO the aquifer tiles or just let it run off into it and let nature take its course. Figured I should probably ask before I flood my lower fortress levels.

Or maybe to sum it up, do I have to do anything special to get aquifers to absorb water?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Gates
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:17:46 am »
You can make 3 tile wide bridges that function like gates. Just make sure to build a lever and then from the lever queue the bridge to be linked. And remember to set the direction the bridge will retract. So many messed up bridges because of that.

Building destroyers can't take out walls, bridges, or floors as far as i'm aware. I also think that they can only destroy things in the same z level as them.

Pots are considered tools under finished goods. Try enabling that.

EDIT: Crap, that's jugs, nevermind.

Yea, I kind of ended up doing that. They still wouldn't put on hoods or cloaks right, and the commander of the army wouldn't wear caps, but at least they put on the important things. Admittedly these were seven very tough dwarfs and if they did die to goblins & friends it would have been from sheer number anyways so I imagine those few pieces wouldn't exactly have mattered. Lucky shots are lucky after all.

Yep, had it on replace and all that. I would remove the cloak and hood from their list and they'd go put on the breastplate and helm. I would tell them to THEN put on the cloak and helm, and they would remove the breastplate and helm and then put on the cloak and hood. I shouldn't be running into any clothing limit because here was their uniform:

1x- shield
1x- helm
2x- cap
1x- hood
1x- breastplate
2x- mail shirt
1x- cloak
1x- gauntlets
1x- mittens
1x- greaves
1x- high boots

But see, their first uniform was all iron (well the parts that could be made out of iron anyways) and they would wear everything on the list. But once I switched them out to a few steel items, they just wouldn't have that. They'd put back the iron items, remove their cloak and hood, put on the steel items, remove the breastplate and helm, and then put on the cloak and hood.

Well that's what I'm saying. I could order them to move somewhere, and they go in half nude. I'd order them to kill a sheep and they'd go in all spartan style. After redoing the uniforms, I found out they would take the breastplate and helm of when trying to equip their cloaks and hoods. Any solution to that other than just do without one or the other?

Yea, I did that. The item is showing up when I go to personally equip the dwarf as if he already has it, but he's not wearing it. I made 7 helms/breastplates/greaves for my dwarves, and told them to use the new uniforms, but they ONLY picked up the greaves and left the helms and breastplates in the armor stockpile that's not forbidden or anything like that.

EDIT: Ah, fixed it. After a few rounds of training an ambush came. Rather than grow the balls required to face the enemy without armor, they decided they should wear the equipment I offered them.

I had assigned my military dwarfs some iron uniforms early in the game to push back the goblin tide. The time has come to upgrade them to steel helms/leg armor/breastplates. I changed those three items to steel instead of iron in the uniform menu and the dwarves put back the iron items, but ONLY picked up the steel greaves. Why is this, and how can I get them to quit being retarded?
