DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Titan vs 15 goblin thieves
« on: December 15, 2007, 12:33:00 pm »
Three words:  Not very interesting.

The goblins just cower on their side of the arena enclosure while the titan walks over to them and punches each one to death, one by one.  At least he would if he didn't get tired then over-exerted.  I'm glad I kept a save from before I pulled the lever.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Smokeclasped and Zealscar
« on: December 03, 2007, 12:33:00 am »
14th Hematite, by the calendar.

This is the first entry that I've managed to pen since our arrival in the spring.  I write this while the rest of my compatriots are either asleep or busy moving our belongings into the deeper parts of our fortress.

Unwittingly, in selecting the site for our new outpost, we stumbled upon a kobold cave complex.  We've all heard reference to it before, back in the mountainhome.  Issokfensast, in the kobold tongue. Zealscar to those of us who have lost family members to it's cowardly inhabitants.

Luckily, we are some distance away from the entrance proper of the caves, but I've ordered my dwarves to keep themselves quiet, just in case any of those damned creatures gets it in their mind to go for a bit of a wander.  It seems that the entrance to the place is only being guarded by a trio of kobolds: an old cripple whose name we've overheard as Grayngis,

a silent soldier wielding a copper shield and spear,

and a lookout with an unpronounceable name.

All three seem to be watching the south for intruders and have, as yet, not noticed our presence on the top of the hill within sight of the volcano we understand they revere.  Fortune favors us apparently.

Mebzuth, our woodworker, spied with his lookingglass into the valley being watched over by the guards.  From our vantage point, he could make out a horde of kobolds and their leader, a fierce bowman named Chroglimbis

and his second Thlamin

Both of these...monsters are well known back in the mountainhome, delighting in striking down travellers and making off with their valuables.

We don't have the resources currently to take down these bastards, but Armok willing, we will eventually.  As we've been unable to send word back to the mountainhome, I can only pray that the autumn caravan doesn't stumble upon the encampment in the valley.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What's going on in your fort?
« on: December 01, 2007, 08:05:00 pm »
My current goal involves making Golden Salve.  Given how hard it is to find a valley herb (I spent all three months of spring searching for it and only turned up one), this could prove to be difficult.

Plus, rather than my usual compact fort, I've decided on a sprawling one, with long corridors and plenty of space to turn into zoos, statue gardens, and all sorts of other recreational stuff.

I'm hoping that we can use this as a means of reducing the number of threads asking duplicate questions.  Nnt that it's been a problem or anything, but as this game gains in popularity (as I'm sure it will), I could see it becoming one.

Please bump this thread as needed, and ask your questions here, newbie or otherwise.  As always, and as I'm sure some of the veterans around the board will be quick to direct you towards, check the Dwarf Fortress Wiki for answers to your questions.  It is a *great* resource, though I'd keep in mind that, as great a resource as it is, you can't pose any direct questions to it.

I'll do the best I can to compile the questions I see coming up.  Gimme a while to get things organized.

DF Gameplay Questions / Regarding tame, caged predators
« on: November 19, 2007, 12:13:00 pm »
An elven caravan came to my fort and traded me two caged lions (tame).  Should I just leave them as zoo attractions, or are they safe to be released and used as attack animals or some such?

DF Bug Reports / Digging up ramps, unable to reach next z-level
« on: November 28, 2007, 10:56:00 am »
I've run across this a number of times.  If I start off on a lower z-level and dig upward ramps, I'm unable to mine the z-level right above where my ramps lead.  Digging an up/down stairway lets me access the next z-level just fine and continue on with my mining, and the ramps otherwise appear to behave normally afterwards.  It's

Digging downward ramps, from an upper z-level to a lower one, seem to work fine and I'm able to mine the area right next to the ramps without issue.

DF Suggestions / More merchant interaction
« on: December 04, 2007, 05:32:00 pm »
Probably a suggestion for a much later point in development of the game, but I'd love to see some deeper levels of interaction between the dwarves of your fortress and the merchants who come.  Traditionally, in fantasy stories (as well as in history) the arrival of the merchants was this welcome occasion.  They brought in news from the outside world along with their trade goods.

Non-merchant travellers also came along with the traders.  Bards and other entertainers, mercenaries (in the form of guards) and adventurers, itinerant craftspersons, etc.  As annoying as it would be for productivity, it would be cool to see a group of dwarves drop what they're doing and gather around in the dining hall to listen to a bard sing the tales of some great hero in a far off land (maybe a previously played adventurer).

DF Suggestions / Holidays and dates in engravings
« on: February 18, 2008, 11:56:00 am »
It's a pretty small thing, given the overall scope of the game, but I'd think it would be really neat if things like dates could somehow be included in wall engravings:

"Dwarf McDwarfity was killed by Named Goblin on 7th Limestone, 1053"

For historical events, it could just pick a date randomly.

You could also use this sort of thing to establish the dates that holidays occur on:

"The Grand Trajedy of Sorrows occurs every 25th Slate to commemorate the death of Historical Leader in the year 874."

DF General Discussion / I find it amusing...

...that there are twelve types of gibbons, a whole mess of sharks, but only one kind of dog.

Add your own!

DF General Discussion / We need some gameplay FAQs
« on: December 07, 2007, 04:21:00 pm »
Preferably on the boards stickied at the top with a short explanation and a relevant link directing to the wiki for more in-depth information.  It does no good to have to answer the same question over and over again.  The only foreseeable problem might have to deal with the ever updating nature of this game's development.
