DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress building styles, quirks and habits

I build gate towns with a road running through.  The idea of just sinking a couple of stairways into the ground and building around that central stairway is completely foreign to me.

Examples:
Shotrake
Dance of Spears

I like my fortresses to feel like locations where I'd feel excited exploring.  Having large rooms carved out that serve multiple purposes works, but it lacks the flair I really enjoy.

In one of my forts, I had a dwarf miner (one of the originals) who, fairly early on in the fort life, lost his mining buddy and a lung to a goblin ambush.  He stayed in bed for something like two years while he was recovering.  The fort grew, and I decided to go ahead and make him into the fortress' sheriff.  I gave him a small apartment back in the halls of the jail I had dug out, and gave him a craftsdwarf workshop.  He made toys.  Whenever I started digging out new areas of my fortress, he'd rush over there ('cause I never disabled the mining job from him), sometimes beating the newbie miners to the job.  And he'd tear through the stone like butter (he was legendary by the time he had his injury).  I never expanded much, so the other miners never had a chance to get their mining skill up.  So, in my mind, here you had this old-hand miner who was simply a legend in dwarven society and who would double over gasping for air on occasion, showing the new guys how it was done.  And he'd lap 'em too.  Like 2 or 3 tiles for every one they dug out.

Same fort, there was the Baroness who had on her relationship list a ton of different dwarves which were identified as her friends.  When I went to check any of those dwarves relationships with the baroness, she was either absent entirely or she was listed as a passing acquaintance.  She obviously thought really highly of herself, and everybody was just scared of pissing her off and incurring the wrath of the hammerer.

Well I think the ASCII has a certain charm, and I got used to reading it fairly quickly, but when the same symbol is used for Goats, Groundhogs and Goblins, Hippos and Horses cannot be easily distinguished without tabbing over them, and Minotaurs, Mudmen and Mules are all a brown "M", I daresay there are issues that need to be addressed.

It's weird.  I've never had any problem identifying the creature I'm looking and knowing what it is based on where it is in the world (goats are white and generally stick to the mountains, groundhogs are brown and live in lower biomes, and goblins never show up unless there's been an announcement).  I try to keep tabs on which creatures belong to the biome I'm playing in by checking the unit list regularly fairly early in the game, so I'm rarely caught off-guard (hoary marmots and macaques screw me up on occasion).

I guess I've got to be in a pretty small minority in not getting tripped up by that, given that I've seen any number of people voice their issues with confusing creatures with one another, so it's clearly something that needs to be addressed at some point.  However, with the introduction of randomized creatures, you're still going to need to tab over creatures to really know what you're looking at, and making unique tiles for everything is going to be difficult.

For the record, I like ascii, but I grew up playing all the old classics (Including the original Rogue) so reading the "Matrix code" hasn't been a problem for me for a very long time.

Recreate that prison from Kung Fu Panda!  ^_^

THIS.

Sadly, to do it right, we'd need to have ropes and elevators.  Still shouldn't stop somebody from trying!

Current fort: Training up some marksdwarves in preparation for the inevitable sieges (I should probably turn them on in my init to make it more exciting, huh?).

I gotta say, this thread kinda weirds me out.  I mean, I posted it up over two years ago, and here it is, still going strong (though, to be fair, it was necroposted).  Still, woot!  Yay for good, solid topics!

A regen is not required if you just replace one of the reactions in your smelter raw file.  By "replace", I mean replace the reaction and product lines.  I used the Adamantine reaction, but you can use any reaction you don't think you'll need.  It's a good idea to include it separately in future world generations, but it works fine this way as a patch on old ones.

That sounds like far too much work relative to how annoyed I was.  I have more dwarves in my fort now, so things are picking up.  I actually have a bit of surplus to build with now!

I've talked about how to do that in a different thread, if the OP is interested I can dig it up and provide a link.

Not interested personally, but feel free to put it up!  Sounds like some folks could find that useful!

I've heard stories of batmen popping out of the chasms and attacking everybody. Will they do it on random occasions or only if I drop some Alunite on their heads?

Both.  You can stop the chasm attacks if you drop magma into it.  iirc, this'll spawn a nasty reprisal at first, but if you handle it, you won't have to worry about chasm attacks any more.

Also, keep an eye on rivers and wells.  Frogmen and lizardmen love to jump out at random times.

I guess the other dorfs still drank the beer later... would someone hand me the brain bleach, please?

What?  Alcohol sterilizes stuff.  You'd rather the beer went to waste?

Wow. I searched dogwelder and eventually ended up on flirtbox because of those tiny irresistible links. Damn you, you tiny, persuasive bastards!

Better there than TV Tropes, no?
