DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Stupid different colored rocks...
« on: December 15, 2009, 09:21:47 pm »
I have a tendency to just stick the mason's workshop in the middle of a fresh set of stones.  This probably isn't the best tactic if I'm trying keep my block's color under control, huh?   :D

Mostly I'm just grousing about my lack of foresight.  I could probably be smarter about things, but I'm kinda in a zen groove with this fort right now.

Had I been thinking, yeah, I probably would've dropped in the economic stones mod, since I like having that degree of control.  It's been a while since I loaded DF up and really played it though.

I've never really been a fan of the quantum stockpile.  I mean, it's really handy, but somehow...I don't know, I guess I'm a purest or something.

I might use the stock screen for the time being.  I'm only sitting at about 2k stone, which doesn't really cause too much of a delay when I look at it.  I want to convert it all to blocks though, since I enjoy building outdoor constructions.  It didn't help that I had forgotten to turn off the pop cap of 10 I had set when I first started this fort.  Hard to get anything done with only 11 dwarves.  Heheh...

This is the fortress I'm talking about, btw.  And your suggestions are appreciated!

I have plenty of blocks to build all sorts of constructions.  But they're all in different colors (orthoclase yellow, microline blue, granite grey, and rocksalt white, with a smattering of petrified wood red).  Which means that I can either wait for enough rocks of the right type to be produced, or I can build my fortress so it looks horrifically colorful and random.   :-\

I suppose I could always just go ahead and build stuff now, then replace it when I get the right colors.

Probably a series of throw-away forts as I figure out how the new features work, probably starting with burrows.  When I feel confident enough, I'll probably set about delving into the new underground features and see if I can find me an underground mushroom forest!  XD

Because he was propelled there by the Hammerer for not fulfilling a mandate for clear glass on a map with no sand.

Wouldn't underground elves just be drow?

Definitely not tree-huggers!

They worship GCS?

Holy crap!!! I.... I hope to achieve such a level of excellence one day.

You too can achieve it, if you're willing to spend 100+ years in the same fortress!

As long as you're collapsing natural, non-aquifer squares into aquifer squares, you'll be safe.  Or are you talking something like taking a section of aquifer and collapsing that?  Like, drop a chunk of aquifer down a level and see if it continues to spawn water?  I don't think anybody's ever done that.  It would be interesting to see what would happen.

Be sure to have a full menagerie of surface creatures along with you, so you can, in turn, test the effect on lava has on each of them.  Also, have representative examples of all the major surface materials (including horn, ivory, coral, etc.) so you can likewise conduct tests.

Looking for inspiration for something to build. Ideas would be appreciated.

Trading outpost, set up on a crossroads on the overland map.

Too lazy to google it but what even is /v/?

One of the forum areas on 4chan.  Also pretty popular on /tg/ (traditional games) on the same site, but there is a quite a bit of cross-pollination.

At above 30 or 40+ dwarves, it gets harder and harder to micromanage.  That said, I've run a 200+ dwarf fort, yet at any given time, I only had 5-15 idlers (and I even dipped into long stretches where everybody was busy doing something).  The trick is to trust that eventually, your dwarves will get done whatever you want to get done.  If there's a job I want done that isn't getting done, I look at the pool of ilders, pick one at random and activate the appropriate job.  I don't even bother untasking the job when the dwarf finishes up.  I've honestly never felt the drag of micromanagement and I've never used any external programs to help out.

Once I've reached the point of having a sizable population that runs itself, my focus shifts onto building up my fortress.  The stocks screen is indispensable for making sure my fortress is maintained.  Starting to run low on booze?  Queue up some brewing jobs at the stills.  Running low on barrels?  Queue up some new ones.  Running low on wood?  Designate a section of the forest to be chopped down.  Everybody who isn't busy doing a different job ends up hauling stuff.  If I've done my job while the fortress is growing (making sure there are enough stockpiles to hold everything, adding dwarves to jobs that need doing as they come up, etc), I can practically sit back and just watch the fortress work without any intervention.

Looks fantastic!

Ooh!  You should try building some arch supports/flying buttresses!

I accidentally scuttled one by closing a wall grate on it.  Didn't drop anything other than what it was carrying, iirc.
