DF Suggestions / Re: ToadyOne, The Bare Minimum
« on: November 08, 2008, 09:32:32 am »
I think Toady has mentioned that he'll really only start working on the presentation arc when donations start lagging.  Given that a good number of folks are more than willing to support DF as it currently stands (myself included), I wouldn't hold my breath about getting graphics any time soon.

Shouldn't this go in Bug Reports?

Bravo.

How is it bad?  It's simple and short, but I've been having a blast in the space stage.   I'm not saying the game doesn't have flaws, but the game is much more fun than a lot of other things I've played lately.

I'm with ya.  I like the fact that it's not bug riddled and able to be played right out of the box.  I do hope they develop some expansions for it, since the gameplay can only be improved upon.

I wonder what kind of system requirements that earlier game would have needed.  I mean, we all know what kinds of issues DF has even without graphics.  The earlier Spore was a fully rendered 3D world doing all procedural stuff.  I have my doubts about how feasible such a program would've been for general consumption.  Few people would have access to the systems available to your average commercial game development studio, let along one by one of the recognized names in the industry.

There is a story-line in the game, but I don't think it triggers until you reach the space stage (though I wouldn't be surprised if there might be more to be seen in the other modes if you go poking around; the sim games are notorious for those kinds of easter eggs).  I haven't played enough of the space exploration game to have a good idea of what's going on, but there's something about an unknown alien attacking planets.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Strip Mining

Warning, since wildlife will always spawn once existing wildlife depletes, you'll be under constant assault from animals (or undead in terrifying areas).

AKA, Survival Mode

I wonder if, by being aware of and playing games like DF, we end up being spoiled by offerings like Spore because we know how much better things could be (ie, strong gameplay over interesting visuals)?

I think I would've enjoyed it if the game had the progression of SimEarth: cellular (spread over the oceans of the planet and develop into a multi-cellular form), creature (fill up the land and become more intelligent), tribe (populate uninhabited lands [stone to iron age in SimEarth]), civilization (wars and energy managment [atomic to nanotech]).  Going into space would just be icing on the cake after all of that.

Regardless, I picked it up and I'm having fun with it.  I can see scads of places where it could be improved, but I'm not letting that stop me from enjoying it.  But, I'm pretty easy to please.

DF Suggestions / Re: Return of the Guilds - Guild Structure and Politics
« on: August 28, 2008, 08:59:58 pm »
This idea seems a better fit for the stated intent of this thread than the other one (apologies if this is too off-topic):

When the economy starts, have the guilds be the ones who are in charge of a shop appropriate to their trade (gem shops, clothing shops, etc.).  Non-economic guilds wouldn't have shops (mining, etc.).  If a guild isn't present in a given fortress, initial shop ownership would default back to the broker.

Revenue generated from those shops would filter back into the guild coffers.  Any profits from the shop might be distributed amongst guild-members as a way of ensuring that during periods of low activity, they're not evicted from their living quarters.

DF General Discussion / Re: Why is the development so slow?
« on: August 28, 2008, 08:11:04 am »
Not every game is built for every player.  That somebody out there doesn't enjoy DF as much as I do doesn't particularly bother me.  They can spend their money on games they like, and I can shoot money off to Toady to help support DF's development.

I had a vision of the moisture collection caves from Dune when I started reading this thread.

DF General Discussion / Re: Toady One's Influences/Ideas......

I think Toady got some of his inspiration about the goblins and their baby snatching from the movie Labyrinth.  I know that he's mentioned it more than once.

Curses / Re: LCS as a conspiracy-type game
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:50:08 pm »
Honestly, I'm not certain.  I'm not well-versed enough in the genre to have a good appreciation for what elements would be necessary to convey the right mood and feel.  The idea of switching things from a liberal-conservative axis to one where there would be multiple groups each trying to undo each other.

Unfortunately, I'm going to be disappearing for a week here, so I'm going to have to put any sort of deeper thought on the subject on hold.  I just wanted to capture the idea before it slipped away.  I'm really interested in expanding on the idea because there's just something about how LCS presents itself that just cries out for things like the Bavarian Illuminati to be included.  At least to me.  I fully admit that I just might be alone in that.   ;D

Curses / LCS as a conspiracy-type game
« on: August 12, 2008, 09:22:41 pm »
I've been reading the Illuminatus trilogy recently, and I can't help but think that with some tweaks (ok, major tweaks), LCS could be turned into a conspiracy type of game.  Rather than working on changing government, you work on changing/controlling society and fighting against other conspiracies (Discordians vs Illuminati, or what have you).

Not really sure how I'd go about making such a change, but it's crossed my mind recently and I thought I'd toss it out there to see if there's anybody else who thinks it might be a neat thing to work on.
