DF Gameplay Questions / Re: cinnabar
« on: February 26, 2014, 01:58:54 pm »
cinnabar is quite useful because it is one of the few red stones. When making stone mechanisms you can play a bit with stone selection (stockpile linking and limiting which stone is accepted) to make a specific color mechanism so you can color-code your levers

Cinnabar is also magma-safe, IIRC, making it ideal for walls/gates/mechanisms that are to be used in any magma-related function.

DF Gameplay Questions / How Can I Get My Minecarts Back?
« on: February 26, 2014, 01:57:58 pm »
In my main fortress that's doing fucking awesome and I'd like to keep it that way, my automated minecart sorting system has broken down. It seems that while building a few more minecarts, that were dumped into the sorting machine to be placed in the proper stack, they have gotten stuck somehow over the hole my tools get dumped into and I can't move them at all; not even with DFHack.

Now they won't use that route, and I can't make any more because all my (unused) minecarts are stuck on a single square, and the route assignment screen shows red X's next to every single cart, including the ones already assigned to routes and are just sitting on their stops.

The minecart you see in the red circle is actually about 35 minecarts floating over an open space as they were dumped down below to the quantum stock pile for tools. The lever was an attempt at opening a draw bridge built under the minecarts to see if they would drop; they did not. D:

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF 2012v0.34 question and answer thread

So, I've got an FB trying to eat a bait door.  It's an Exceptional door, so non-artifact.  He's doing no damage to it that I can tell.  He ate a door prior to this (it's a path of doors to get them to where I want them), so he definitely can destroy buildings.

None of the DF-Hack commands for destruction, at least that I can find in the documentation, will destroy a building.

Before I sacrifice a Dorf to manually take the door down, any ideas?

If the FB can't fly, you can channel a pit down behind the door so when he eventually breaks it down, he still can't get inside.

If you think you have enough time, you can make a bridge (immune to building-destroyers if I am not mistaken) and link it up so you can use that to close the entrance behind the door. But linking levers to stuff is quite time consuming; even if using fastdwarf :O

DF Gameplay Questions / What Time is It?
« on: February 24, 2014, 08:45:39 pm »
I am wanting to start doing dwarf computing and I wanted to make some kind of clock. I don't know the intervals of DF time compared to RL time, though. How long is a day? Month? Year? I know it has to be measured in ticks, but that is actually more useful for my purposes anyway.

Can you dump them to a quantum stockpile?

I don't know why, but all of my dwarves suddenly thought it would be a good idea to go hang out in the sewers. 3 drowned and 25 are trapped in a tube with 3/7 water, but it's flowing too fast for them to swim back into the fort.

I too had this happen. One of my planters was out gathering herbs above ground and discovered a whole mob of crossbow wielding goblins who proceeded to spam arrows at him.

I don't know how he did it, but the planter managed to pull one of the arrows from his wound and used it to kill every last one of the guys shooting him. Then he bled to death 2 tiles from the stairs down inside the fort. :(

I just have them throw all that crap into the magma tube.

Forgot to bury the cat, but it was a stray so who cares, right?

I'd guess it's either because the new features are still so unfinished and buggy that they wouldn't be all that fun to play around

Are you kidding? I have fun just reading his updates about testing things. XD

DF Gameplay Questions / Can/Should I Dispose of Severed Dwarf Limbs?
« on: February 23, 2014, 02:34:36 pm »
I have a large collection of severed limbs that belong to various dwarves; some living, some not. I thought they were supposed to be buried with the rest of a dwarf if/when they died, but that doesn't seem to be happening with a few of my dead dwarves' feet. There is so much, my corpse stock pile is almost full; and there's only 1 actual corpse of a cat in it.

I keep getting Forgotten Beasts made entirely of water coming in through the underground. The 1 dwarf I have guarding the door down there just keeps kicking them into mist. I am not sure if there is 1 and it keeps changing it's name or if this world generated a lot of weak, water monsters.

Update: Just spent the last hour on the stocks screen, manually selecting every broken piece of garbage my dwarves were keeping for some reason, to be dumped in the magma tubes. There has got to be a better way to clean up their filth.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Automated Annoyance Disposal System?
« on: February 23, 2014, 12:14:03 pm »
Possibly beside the point, but in case you just find prisoners annoying, how about _also_ changing defence layout so you take fewer prisoners?

To reduce the number of prisoners you take in, you can put the cages as _last_ line of automated defence, right at the entrance doors and behind a few rows of weapon traps. Most of the goblins end up pre-chopped and the goblinite gets harvested automatically. You still need to collect it, but you won't get around that anyway. Goblins that make it to a cage usually leave an arm or leg outside.

If you're not interested in minced goblins, you can also use blunt weapons, spikes, corkscrews and crossbows in weapon traps, but blunt and piercing weapons often jam and crossbows need reloading.

(Of course, i do this because i don't kill prisoners on principle, so taking a great many means quite a bit of work and organisation for me.)

I quite like the numbers; I just need more fun activities for them to do while enjoying their stay in my fortress. :)

But I am getting some mixed messages with my proposed plan. Some are saying it works, and some aren't (I also posed this question on Reddit). So I guess the only way to know for sure is to try it myself.

10 z-levels wasn't even enough to kill one of my dwarves (bitch fell while digging because she's not too bright). 25 should kill something, right? I only have 115 I can use. XD

I am not trying to use the prisoners for any sort of experience or usefulness; they are pests and must be exterminated. I've already killed enough goblins to make the Age change. I am going to try and get it all the way to the Age of Fairy Tales.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bare Minimum Clothing Requirements?

Given that chain mail covers the upper legs as well as the torso, and presumably everything in between, would chain mail + boots be sufficient to stop these negative thoughts?
Chainmail may protect the thighs, but they still occupy the Upper Body slot, so I'm pretty sure they'll still be upset about being pantsless in front of their friends and family. Same goes for robes, which technically cover the whole body, but are still considered Upper Body wear.
Great.  I now have a mental image of a dwarf in neck-to-knee chainmail that's crotchless and assless.

Stupid sexy Urist...
