Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I can not advance move to the open space; the floor is only 1 z-level below it. There is no water fall, either.

I was able to dive down into the water and move onto the ground. O.o

If you have any sort of slicing weapon, even the large copper dagger i'd start trying to decapitate it with it, i have yet to see a (one headed) creature that can survive being decapitated.

Then you've never encountered a zombie before.

Okay, so I had to leave the house while still combating this mummy, so I saved it and closed everything down. When I came back, the mummy is no longer there.
A mummy is not a zombie. Decapitation or bisection work 100% of the time, and are the only way to kill one.

I was commenting on his statement of him not seeing a monster that didn't die from decapitation. Zombies don't always die from decapitation; I was not implying that a mummy worked the same way.

But thanks for the tip. If I encounter a mummy again, I will slice his head off. :D

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Fast-Travel From Underground?
« on: May 04, 2012, 04:51:34 pm »
I noticed this in the wiki for Caverns under Adventure mode:

Quote
...if you manage to reach a cavern area immediately underneath a town you will be able to fast-travel to the surface.

I am in a cavern area directly under a city with sewer access, but I still get the unable to fast-travel message. Is there some trick to doing it?

What exactly do mummy curses do? The wiki does not say what they do; only that they exist and it has an effect on combat.

Magma pumps, but as you can't get those on embark I think slashing and blunt are better than stabbing

I think you mean stabbing and blunt. Slashing = more severed limbs. More severed limbs = more zombies.

Create a bridge (raising, not retracting) of at least two tiles lengthwise.
Raise the bridge and create a dump zone under it.
Dump objects to be smashed.
Lower drawbridge, smashing objects out of existence.

So it destroys items as well? Interesting...

DF Gameplay Questions / Help! I can't find my mummy D:
« on: May 03, 2012, 05:31:06 pm »
So I was locked in an epic battle with a mummy I found (first one ever) and I had to leave since it was taking freaking forever to kill the damn thing so I saved and closed the game.

When I came back and loaded the save, the mummy was just gone. The limbs it had lost and reanimated were still there, chilling out (I'm a necromancer) but the torso+head I was battling isn't anywhere in the tombs.

Is this part of the mummy's curse? He was really dead after 2 blows, but his curse made me think I was pummeling a mummy that simply wouldn't die when I was actually just breaking my hands against a wall or something?

I was wondering this too. The wiki links for "atom smasher" just link to the page for Bridges, so I am under the assumption that an Atom Smasher is just a gate system that when you "close" the gates, you're smashing anything standing on the gate tile into the ceiling, killing it instantly.

Close, but DF is even worse: designed, built, and marketed by a mathematician :P

Really? You'd think a mathematician would make you enter commands as equations.

So basically, Legend of Zelda style RPG rules where it's totally cool to trash their pottery for a stray rupee.

Just don't touch the chickens.

You don't necessarily need to knapp anything since you will start with a skinning knife. But the skinning knife has to be either on the ground or in your hands; it can not be in a container.

Unless you're an outsider, you will also start with a waterskin which you can refill (they hold 3 units of liquid) by using shift-I and selecting the waterskin while near a source of water (or any liquid, really).

Yep, Kobolds were a new (if not weak) enemy to me.
I'm sort of a new player to this game. Just yesterday, I found a cavern (that wasn't flooded) on Fortress Mode. The day before that though, I found a cavern that was full of water on Adventure Mode. My Adventurer had no trouble swimming at all (he ain't a novice), but for some reason, he eventually started to drown! He was at the top of the water, and there wern't any walls or blocks above him. I checked with l just to be sure. Though the moment before that, I had him swim underwater to a tile that had a block above. When I moved him back though, he just kept drowning. It looked like some sort of glitch...
It kind of pissed me off a bit, since that cavern happened to be my first one.

If you're not at least Adequate at swimming, you can panic and start to drown in water you'd normally be able to swim through no problem. Though, that usually only happens when stunned if anything but Novice or Dabbling.
