you forgot yourself getting elected to mayor :P
There may or may not have a been a previous mayor that decided to issue a mandate just as he was elected and then had to be replaced.

And very probably, that mayor may or may not have had an unfortunate accident involving an elephant, three goblins, a bucket o' lava, and a drunk elf. What an unfortunate accident that may have been.
Said person may or may not have been one of the starting seven and therefore might have had enough respect to avoid any kind of accident. Also, there is no such thing as a drunk elf, only a dead elf.

Finished up my turn. Uploading the save now. I haven't finished my write up of the turn so for now here is the quick synopsis. Most of it is going to end up being fun for the next person in line.

I'm alive. Working on the fort now.

Is there a time-limit on turns? Pan's been working +2 weeks.  :o
I thought it was clear that responsibilities go out the window and Hammerscar is your only priority!

There's is no limit - as as Pan updates frequently, I don't think there's a problem.
Would you mind taking me off the list? I've been too busy to actually contribute to this fortress and I'd rather those that have built its story take their turns instead of having to wait for me.

7
I'm alive, kind of. I've just been busy and haven't had a chance to play. I'll try to get around to it soon.

8
This thread feels a bit empty without Thecard.
Other than that, I guess we're off to a good start.
I know. Also I'll start updating either tomorrow or the day after. I've been busy with the holidays.

Uh, I might have done a mistake. Zombi is 16 years old in this. Someone might have to retcon this. Anyway, Reavers up. Here's the save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7144
Could you swap my spot with Brewster's? I've got a lot more on my hands than I expected for thanksgiving and I don't think I'll be able to play it much for the next 4-5 days.

The miners have struck Kaolinite while digging out the kitchen area. Stodir was rather pleased to hear this. Now he can make crafts out of the even more valuable porcelain. Stoneware crafts have a value four times that of stone crafts while ones made of Kaolinite have a value that is ten times more than those made of stone. It will have to wait for now though. I would hate to see him waste it on crafts that aren’t masterpieces.

I’ve finally met with the liaison. I’ve requested that next year’s caravan bring bars of mithril and the elemental metals as well as stones or blocks of all the materials required for forging the crystal metals. I’ve also requested that they bring various books so that we may begin to build libraries. With the bonus we gave the merchants this year hopefully they will bring a large amount of what I requested next year. After we talked about what we wanted the liaison gave me the list of what the mountainhome wants in exchange. Luckily two of the items on the list are already being crafted at Stodir’s kiln. Hopefully he will continue to make bracelets and crowns to trade next year.

The entrance trap system has been completed. The path is now filled with stone-fall traps. All that’s left is to activate the drawbridges so that they only route through is to wander through every single trap. Shortly after it was finished a chaos dwarven thief was spotted by Neo as he was entering the fort. The thief punched neo in the stomach causing him to vomit all over our brand new entrance. While I’m not exactly happy about having to clean it up already the thief didn’t manage to harm Neo in any serious manner. Sadly the thief also escaped without being harmed. This means he will surely return to his masters and inform them of our location.

I’ve done a little research on the chaos dwarves and I’ve found something rather surprising and revolting. Chaos dwarves are dwarves that have been corrupted or possessed by evil demonic entities that once ruled the world. However, this chaos dwarven civilization is led by no such demons. Its led by… elves. Elves! What kind of dwarves allow themselves to be controlled by elves? A civilization of soulless monsters who revel in the slaughter of anything and everything is led by a trio of nature loving freaks we can’t even harm a tree.  The only course of action now is simply to kill all of them. They now know where we live and they will come to attack us eventually. I must make sure we are prepared.

Opal 15, 251
I’ve had Ironeyes begin to forge new steel equipment for the militia. For right now they have all been assigned steel weapons and kite shields. I’ve also ordered the construction of a few pells in the barracks. Eventually I hope to have them upgraded to quintains but for right now anything will do. Seeing as we have had increased thief activity in the past few months we must start to prepare for the eventuality that our enemies will attempt to besiege us. I must make sure they find a fortress ready to defend itself instead of a fortress that opts to simply hide behind thick stone walls.

A frost giant caravan has arrived today. I’ve had several of Stodir’s crafts taken to the depot in order to trade with the merchants. Naturally I would not trade with such an aggressive race but I fear sending out the underequipped militia would be certain death. A frost giant is over ten times the size of a dwarf and their weapons are several times our size as well. Their kind is the reason the dyansauri race went extinct over a hundred years ago. Both before and after the frost giants have terrorized the various races of the world in their brutal wars. I will not let their merchants come and demand our goods as if nothing happened. They will pay for what they did to our brothers many years ago.

I’ve finished it. I’ve finished my masterpiece. I have created a crown fit for a king to wear. This artifact must be an effort by the gods to foreshadow Sharksilver’s future rise to power. I’ve also begun to wear the crown. It seems only fitting. I am the administrator here and I did craft the crown myself in a mood invoked by Shazak herself. The crown itself must be imbued with special knowledge that Shazak wished for me to have. Perhaps it will aid me in developing this fortress and leading its rise to power. This artifact is clearly a sign from the gods and I will not ignore it.

Obsidian 21, 251
I’ve finished trading with the merchants. They brought almost nothing to trade with us. Just a small amount of food and very large pieces of clothing that could cover four dwarves. For everything they had I traded them one single craft. For being a brutal race they really do seem to lack in the brain department.

The end of winter is finally upon us and with it the end of the first year at Sharksilver. It has been quite productive. We’ve been able to remain self-sufficient thus far and I see nothing stopping us from continuing to do so. The workshops and forges have all been set up. Most of the mining is done but there still remains part of the housing area and the tomb level that need to be dug out. Afterwards I can send the miners deeper in an effort to find more valuable ores and perhaps a cavern. The militia is armed but they still lack armor to protect themselves. That will be a main task for the next year. As the caravan returns home surely more dwarves will hear of our story and choose emigrate here to seek out their fortune and a new life within the fortress. Any new citizens can be used to help flesh out the current industries or venture into new ones we’ve yet to set up. They can also be enlisted to help continue to protect the fortress from those that would wish it harm. We have only eight recruits in the militia at the moment and that will need to increase if we hope to defend ourselves. I’ve drawn up what the fortress looks like at this time and I’ve recorded all information on the citizens and production within the last year. These charts will allow me to check the growth of the fortress over each year.

OOC: The first year is over and no one has managed to die. Almost have the fortress dug out and everything else is up and running. I've updated the stats of all current dwarves in the fortress. I'll start updating them sever six months or so. If anyone has any comments or suggestions feel free to let me know.

Excellent!

Oh, since you have a crucible up, you may want to consider trading for Ilmenite from the homelands if you can get it. It's an ore of iron that has Vanadium in it, and will make a natural Steel Alloy when smelted in a crucible called Crucible Steel that's better than normal steel. (This is actually Wootz steel or Damascus Steel, historically)
What? Isn't Damascus Steel made from magnesium and iron?

There were several impurities that caused Damascus Steel. Vanadium was one of them.
Ilmenite can contain both Vanadium and Magnesium.

Hey Reaver could you have Fishy train with a hammer please?
Will do.

Also teaser image for the next update.

Trading went well with the silver xelic merchants. I’ve acquired a fair amount of cloth, leather, and food from them. They also brought a single ward iron bar with them as well. This will prove extremely useful. Ward iron makes armor that is far superior to steel. The only problem is that there is one bar with which to make something so we can only make a small object. I believe I will have it saved until someone attempts to make a ward iron armor piece during one of the citizen’s strange moods. Surely such an artifact will be extremely powerful in the hands of a worthy soldier.

Limestone 16, 251
The Xelics have finally left the fortress. Since their arrival I’ve had nothing but complaints from them. Next year they will not receive such a kind welcome as they have this year. Actually maybe next year I should have them greeted with fine dwarven presents. I wonder if they like crossbow bolts or perhaps even swords. I guess we will have to find out when they return.

Sandstone 1, 251
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
More dwarves have decided to emigrate to Sharksilver. Another seven have arrived this summer. This time we have greeted a few military dwarves among the newcomers. A group of three swordsdwarves lead by a swordmaster named Grau has decided to make this settlement their home. Grau is a great swordsdwarf, armor user, dodger, and shield user and his two accomplices are competent swordsdwarves themselves. He and his men will prove vital in defending the fortress. Without hesitation I’ve made Grau the militia commander so that he may train the dwarves with his superior skill. With the addition of Grau and his men along with another migrant we now have a total of eight militia dwarves. The list of recruits now consists of two marksdwarves, two speardwarves, and four swordsdwarves. The other three migrants were a hunter, a cheese maker, and a woodcrafter. I’ve had the woodcrafter replace myself as the carpenter, the cheese maker will now aid Ironeyes in smelting steel, and the hunter will now take over for Fishybang as the mason. With these new citizens production should continue to increase. Hopefully even more dwarves will choose to live here in the coming years.

Sandstone 4, 251
The snow has already started to fall in Sharksilver. We have only had a few months without it. The ponds around us froze about a month ago. I’m not quite sure how the area is considered temperate. The earth is frozen for about nine months out of the year.

Sandstone 12, 251
I’ve decided to take up the trade of gem cutting. We have a large amount of gems due to our mining efforts and no one knows how to cut them. To remedy this I’ve started to cut microcline in my spare time. The stone is plentiful and will serve as excellent practice. Once I know what I’m doing I will start to cut actual the gems. I can later use the cut gems to encrust furniture with. Doing so should greatly raise the value of any items encrusted. I’d rather be making soap but what wood resources we have are needed for the production of steel at the moment. I can’t be wasting any of it to produce lye.

Timber 10, 251
Fishybang has been taken by a fey mood. She quickly claimed the mason’s workshop and seized three sandstone rocks for her construction. Seeing as she is a mason her project should be something of use. With any luck it will be a valuable piece of furniture. A table or a chair for the new dining hall would invoke joy in the citizens anytime they see it. A new weapon rack or armor stand would surely boost the soldier’s morale while training. Perhaps it could even be a statue depicting a legendary event.

Timber 15, 251
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Fishy has completed her project. She has created an artifact quality bed. While it’s not as useful as the other furniture items I was hoping for it can still be used. As soon as the miners finish digging out the living areas I’m placing it right into my room. I was a bit confused by what she carved into the side of the bed though. It contains an image of “The Tower Explained” a dog leather book. After asking several other citizens I still have no answer as to what the book is or what it contains. Luckily we brought several history books when we first moved here. Perhaps they will contain some information on this book.

Timber 17, 251
I’ve managed to find out more information on the book. It seems that the book was written by a frost giant necromancer almost hundred years ago. The book contained information about the necromancer tower “Rockstrained”. As far as I am aware the tower still stands to this day. I don’t know why Fishy would craft such an object into an artifact but it does concern me a bit. Perhaps she has been tainted by the necromancer who created the book. She might be serving as a spy for her. I will have to keep my eye on Fishy. If a necromancer were to find our fortress I don’t know if we would be able to defeat it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The dwarven caravan has finally arrived. I’ve ordered all of Stodir’s goods to be taken to the depot. His hard work combined with the value of stoneware has resulted in many high quality goods that we can use to trade. This will be most fortunate as his crafts will be our only form of trading value this year. The other industries are all producing items that we require here in the fortress rather than items we can use to trade.

Timber 26, 251
Trading went well with the merchants. While they did not bring much to trade I purchased all of it and gave them an additional 8,000☼ in goods. I wanted to make sure the merchants knew to bring more next year and it also cleared the fortress of all of Stodir’s crafts. While they are certainly high quality crafts they were starting to clutter up the fortress a bit. Besides now he has a year to create even more crafts for the next caravan. The only ones I’ve had saved were figures of specific historic figures. When I was looking at a few of them it gave me the idea to construct a museum of sorts and fill it with all sorts of artifacts depicting the history of the world.

OOC: So I didn't notice the water had frozen early and as a result everyone almost died. Luckily I managed to make more barrels for booze quick enough and the disaster was averted. Other then that little incident everything is going well. Grau, do me a favor and ask for more swordsdwarves. This is the highest trained one I've ever had migrate to a fortress that wasn't a resident of a previous game. As usual the new dorfs have been added to the main list. If anyone has any comments or suggestions feel free to let me know.

Yay! If chaos dwarves invade, use the bones to make tower shields! I know from experience that while they're no more efficient then, say, steel, shield material doesn't matter for blockage, and CHAOS DWARF BONES.
But if we are attacked by a dragon or come across magma crabs the shields will start on fire/melt.

Actually I've hit gabbro while mining so we should have it in the fort.

Hematite 4, 251
The raven people have begun to encroach upon our territory. I’ve sent Silver and Beenoc to hunt down the beasts in order to keep the fortress safe. If we let them get to close then surely they will attempt to attack us. If they do attack is there is also the possibility that the other tribes of bird people could learn of the attack and then seek us out for themselves.

Hematite 12, 251
The hunters failed in their efforts to slay the raven people. The beasts managed to escape before Silver or Beenoc even got within firing range. This must have only been a scout party. I will have to start work on the trap system right away. We can’t afford to let these beasts enter our fortress when they return. Perhaps they would be of use if we were to trap a few of them. If they’re not economically useful then they could at least be used as live training for the militia.

Hematite 18, 251
The first migrants have arrived in Sharksilver. An additional eight dwarves now call this settlement their home. Among them is Ganthan a novice animal trainer, Neo a dwarf obsessed with swords, Kogsak a skilled speardwarf, Tulon and Adil the farmers, Id the brewer, and two children. All eight of them are welcome here and will prove to be an important part of Sharksilver. I’ve already had Ganthan begin to train our dogs for war and after them he will train the cave crabs. Tulon and Adil have begun work on the farms while Id begins to refill our barrels with alcohol.

Hematite 25, 251
More of the human like creature tribes have returned. This time grasshopper people have been spotted to the west of the fortress. The raven people must have returned and spread word of our existence. I’ve ordered the hunters to make these creatures their priority target. They shouldn’t pose much of a threat anymore. With the new citizens I’ve been able to add another two hunters to the group. Now there are twice as many to combat the feral tribes. Beenoc and Silverwolf have also been getting better with their crossbows making them deadly by themselves.

Malachite 4, 251
Ironeyes has finished setting up the crucible furnace. With its construction we can now smelt steel and begin to forge proper weapons. This will prove to be a great asset to the fortress. Steel is one of the stronger conventional metals we have access to. We still lack the cobaltite, cinnabar, and stibnite to forge the mighty void crystal Ironeyes had spoken of before and there is no sign yet of the rarer mithril or even the fabled adamantine. At the moment steel production will be slow as we lack the flux stone to speed up the process. The first priority will be to forge proper weapons for our militia members. They all carry bronze crossbows but need formal training so that they can defend themselves in melee combat.

Malachite 12, 251
I’ve ordered a trade depot to be constructed in the entrance area. Soon fall will be upon us and the dwarven caravan will arrive. We need to make sure we are ready. While it is being constructed Stodir continues his work on the clay crafts. His skills will prove vital when the caravan arrives. The more items of value they leave with the more they will bring next year. His crafts will be our primary source of income this year as the metal industry is not yet running for profit.

Malachite 14, 251
I’ve spoken with the citizens in an effort to come up with an idea for a large monument in an effort to show off our wealth and attract other dwarves to the fortress. Fishybang suggested we construct a giant fish made of microcline in the front of the fort. I don’t exactly see how that is fitting. We’re located in the middle of a large forest with nothing but small stagnant lakes around us. We have no fish here so it is not a fitting emblem for our fortress. Neo suggested that we make a giant sword of solid steel at the entrance. While I like the idea we don’t have the steel to use for it and the amount of steel we would need is absurd. Out of everyone the only solid idea I have heard was Ironeye’s idea for a large hammer on top of the fortress. A hammer that stood over ten stories tall and was made of pure silver and decorated with night stone and even more silver. She called it the “Hammer of the Moon”. I quite like the idea. I liked the idea so much I suggested that we use a silver hammer as the symbol of our fortress. We held a vote on the matter. Twelve dwarves were for the idea and only one was against it. That one being Neo stating that it should be a silver sword instead. I don’t think I’ve heard him speak a sentence that did not contain the word “sword” yet.

Malachite 16, 251
I have realized a flaw in the plan for the “Hammer of the Moon”. We have no silver resources what so ever. I should have realized this before but I must have gotten caught up in the moment. The instant we find silver I will order the construction to begin. I have another idea that the hammer itself can be used for but I have much to work on for that to happen.

Malachite 22, 251
The raven people have been spotted outside the fortress again. I do not understand why these creatures continue to roam our lands. They do not bother to attack or do anything but run around interrupting and startling the dwarves. The hunters continue to kill several of their kind and drag them back to the butcher to be processed. While the beasts may be annoying they are proving to be a plentiful source of food and leather.

Galena 8, 251
Today Neo came to me with his new steel swords telling me that he had an idea to improve our militia’s ranged ability in combat. His idea was that we create modified crossbows that instead of firing bolts will fire a long sword. In order to conserve the weaponry he suggested that we tie a rope to the sword and simply pull it back to fight with or reload. While the idea itself is a bit off he does seem to be quite creative. Perhaps if I were to have him work with Ironeyes they could come up with some innovative ways to protect the fortress.

Galena 22, 251
A silver xelic caravan has been spotted in the forest. While I’m not particularly fond of their species considering they’re easier to offend than an elf we could use the supplies they bring. I’ve ordered several of Stodir’s crafts to be taken to the depot.  With his crafting skill I should only need a few to trade for the xelic’s entire caravan. While they aren’t exactly a smart race they love dwarven trinkets and that makes them useful. I just have to make sure they do not see our hunters fighting off the native wildlife. Silver xelics become offended and storm off if even a single fly is harmed. I cannot let that happen at least until we have all of the goods we need from them.

OOC: I don't know why my brain doesn't think to take screenshots today. Still building up the fort. Steel production is up and running. The food and booze levels are now stable as well. Stats for you
Spoiler: Beenoc (click to show/hide)
New dorfs added to the main list. If anyone has any comments or suggestions feel free to let me know.

If you can, maybe every other update or so, post Beenoc's military stats? I want to see how he progresses in skills. And I WOULD ask if you updated the raws, but a) you probably didn't, and b) savage area, so giant beasts, so metric fucktons of food.
The raws have been edited. Exarch makes soap and knows that the finest soap is made only from human fat.
