DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What should I use in my weapon traps?
« on: October 26, 2014, 02:38:16 am »
I always mixing 3 manacing spikes, because They have great penetration and they're offten damaging internal organs, 3 spiked balls, because They are breaking bones, and 3 snormous corkscrews. Goblins and trolls can not pass even 5 rows of wooden traps. Usualy...

This is good advice for the average trap.  Overkill is overkill, and 3-5 weapons a trap is a good number.  Even 2, if its high quality and the weapons are good.  The issue is if one weapon gets stuck than they all do, and the trap stops working until a mechanic gets out to it to unclog it.

The reasoning being that if one weapon in a trap of 10 weapons gets stuck than you lost out of the 9 weapons, but if 1 weapon in a trap of 4 gets stuck than you lost out of 3.
Yeah, i know, but look on this from other side, wood is pretty cheap now and you can make really fast a lot of them. After two years your trees will be regrowing, and you must cut them down or They parts will be callapsing on surface injuring/killing your dwarfes, not only on surface, but in undergounds too, because callapsing part of wood can breach many floor levels at once... I learned this hard way.

I just walked into a house and began chopping limbs off left and right. After I wounded a ton of people who went running off in fear, one farmer began to viscously stab me. After a long, bloody fight that eventually ended in him killing me. I skipped turns to watch the aftermath in the bloody house.

Random dude walks in.
Random dude: "I was just out getting some water."
Bystander: To random dude"It is terrifying." He's standing in blood and guts, mind you.
Farmer that killed me: Gesturing to my corpse "This is truly horrifying."

I love this game.

'skipped turns'?  Can you do that after you die?
Spam '.' after your death.

The new pulping stuff tends to make corpses unraisable. Not really sure at what point they become unraisable or still viable.

Try strangling some random critters or people and see if it works, the corpse will be fully intact if you do that.
If you will deal too much damage to upper or lower body during killing it, you will see specific body part failing message. When you will get it, corpse will be mangled and unraisable.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: End of the World?
« on: October 25, 2014, 10:39:39 am »
Now I have a theory of explanation, I set the world generation settings to have a very high number of beasts, low civilizations, low sites, and very high savagery. I guess since there were so few people and so many monsters, I've pushed sentient humanoids to a brink of extinction.
My world has very high savagery, high beast and normal civs and sites. There are still dwarfs and humans around but not many. 90 dwarfs, 40 humans vs. 230 goblins, 36 night creatures and 27 forgotten beasts. Enemies are werelizards and undead led by necromancers.
I guess it wouldn't take much to push my world over the edge, too. Number of beasts and savagery is fun to play around with. =3
Can you export your world gen data?

When all civilizations are dead and cities abadonned completly (without stable beaings inside) you can not retire there as long, as you do not claim this place (what is count as reclaiming in legends mode). But when you start as outsider, you can not claim.

But... This is still possible, i found in age of death some retreat forestes and human caves so... !!SCIENCE!!

I will tell you a short story. Story about Stalith Memistrosphi, but her friends called her "Inka". Inka is known, because she killed Nelti Uprilbatow, Freak Consort Of Twiliht. Stalith was born in Nirana, "Necroquiet", one of 4 great cities. Her parents are unknow, she was only a peasant, found by guards as a baby. She spend her early years with Atthem Cunningclose, priest of The Heavenly Sect, but Stalith doesn't liked him, in fact, he has been found dead in forest, stabed into abdomen many times by large copper dagger. Everybody are still thinking it was a kobold...

She has been adopted by local castle guards. They was training her for years, she was competent Swordswoman when she appied to stay local lady hearthperson. Sadly, Stalith was not respected in her town after Atthem accident and because of rumors about his relation to her...

She has been send to kill Freak Consort Of Twilight, Nelthi Uprilbatow to prove her value. She agreed, but she was unwillig to kill. Stalith was thinking, she can just convince Nelthi to come back to society. In fact, Stalith doesn't know what she meet in Tocnuura Gorbe Lomoth, "Ghostdied the Shade of Tombs" on Totonslexsmul, "The noiseless Swamp".

When she was heading to Tocnuura, she found Etrukara, "Earthenheat", camp belongs to "The Present Sounds". She was scared to show herself, she just sneaked in on ground and checked bags, then stole iron pick and iron helmet. In fact, it was intresting choice.

When she arrived to her target, there was stars on the sky. She heard a lot of stories about bogeyman, she first time heard They cackling. She was sure it was bogeymans, but if not bogeymans... She doesn't even wanted thinking about it. She found entrance to cave, she came inside really slowly... She lightly push the door and doesn't not spoted anybody inside. She lay on goround and was slowly crawling into cave. She was suprised when she reached end of cavern and there was nothing. Literaly noting, not even spiders or vermings. She checked again whole cave, nothing. There was dark outside, she was scared by strange voices from woods, so she closed the door and lay in deepest cornel of cave... after a short while she fall asleep.

When she waked up, she not even think to check if she is still alone, she was sure she was... but... Stalith pale blue eyes was looking at large scaly humanoid. Humanoid has two short tails and bloated body, covered by charcoal, large, overlapping scales. Humanoid was furiously staring her glow fuschia eyes on bronze scimitar, straped to Stalith upper body. She her weapon as fast, as she was able, and without even thinking a second, she just stabed monster into chest and jumped out. She hit monster into hearth, a lot of blood was leaking from hole in scales.

Monster charged at Stalith, but Staliths muscles was remember moves trained by years in castle, swing and jump out, swing and jump out. One of the last swings severed away monsters body, other splitted humanids guts, but Stalith was unscratched. After a desperate fight, a lot of alteires belongs to Nelti Uprilbatow, Freak Consort Of Twilight has ben cut and... this night creature has bled to death...

This is only first Stalith adventure, and i have hope, last one, because i think it will be enough for her to stay heartperson.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Quests and directions

Except that most peoples responses to things are 'it's inevitable' or 'that's terrible' or 'its terrifying', plus there are lots of bugs right now with adventure mode, so, it's just kind of hard to gauge what's actually going on and lots of other stuff.
To fix it, mostly, you must just spend some time in-game. Just leave your character with something what is presing your macro made from dots running. For hour or two.

My World looks pretty live after this. But i spend there a year and half as adventurers (i was creating adventure peasant, making some small stuff like beating (not killing goblins) and retiring them).
It's all really topped off by the fact that once you do find something to do, you slay the great beast or rescue the captured children or something, you'll never be thanked or rewarded for it. I mean, sure in the previous version the only thing status really brought you was more followers, quests from nobles and occasional changes in dialogue but it was still something and something is quite nice.

If I read "It was inevitable" after spreading word of a great feat one more time I'm going to scream until my house catches fire.
After i rescued two childrens not only parents, but other friends of them was happy and thanksfully. When i slayed Tiger Recruit who killed two or three people from helmet, only bandid from the same camp spited at me (Q->People->Filter for name).

Stop enjoing just slaughering everything, don't be mad person possesed by some kind of deamons. Export data about your village, find smallest one. Generate world without knowing whole legends. Join to smallest village, start talking. Read what they are speaking, who is well traveled, who is just fast generated junk...

Bring some lethers, meats, sell them. Look how persons are GLAD, because you did someting fine. Get some soldiers with you, some guides (two-three are good number) find this chilling horror, make manhunt... Prepare everybody, give them weapons, order to stay in correct positions...

Why should we? Maybe it's fun for you to play like that, but why should everyone? And besides, everyone is telling me that the bandits are causing them HARDSHIP, not thieves, bandits, that means they aren't just stealing things, they probably killed a few people too. I will go to their camp and slay them in the name of Armok.

Unfortunately, in this current version this will cause the people who sent me to deal with the bandits to hate me, because emotions are not working correctly right now. I really hope in this upcoming patch with new emotions this issue will be fixed. Hopefully it will fix vampires not attacking anything when they are revealed and other stuff like goblin raiders, terrorizing people on the streets being neutral to you(same for bandits).

Edit: Also, I don't know if I'm just lucky, but I never had trouble finding someone who knows directions to lairs/whatever. Try looking in the local mead hall, lord/lady usually tell you where the site is located, or tell you about someone who can. You can then ask him/her directions to that man(usually he/she is somewhere in that same mead hall, in my experience).
Hardship is not slaughtering everybody on sign. In most cases these bandids have just a lot of robbing thingies and some fights in Their logs, but not too much killing. Some peasant who is killing 20 humans, who just stole courple things, ever when They was stealing for long time, is just dangerous freak, murder and he's scaring people.

Goblin raiders are killing people belongs to site which They're atacking (they have lethal status). If you will slaugher them, but spare these ones who will surrender, poeple will love you.
Goblin bandits are stealing from villages. They are syrrounding persons, even you... Greeting them to start conversation, when They are not close to you, Their group leader (there can be courple groups) will be commenting on surroundings and weather. When They are close to you, They are demanding to yield. If you agree, They will demand to to drop some items, like weapons, backpack, pouches and bags. Then they will push droped items (sadly, as far as i know, you can push and haul items like NPCs) towards them, They will empty them on floor and take what They want. If you will refuse, it depends from They heatness, happiness level and fame. For example, one time i was just grabed by goblin leader and he sayid he defeated many fearsome oponents, but other time i just got hallabard (stoled from my adventurer) swing into neck...

Vampires are broken, because hate is growing slowly in them. Why they should start atacking you? Okey, i am vampire, i killd them, so... what now? Okey, i will threaten you, but if you are brave enough to say that, you propobly skilled vampire hunter, who will want kill me. It will be far better, if i manage to just run, but you are standing in only entrance. I will wait, prepared for fight for your step in this case, because i have no other choice. If you will wound me into leg, escape will be more difficult. I changed my personality many times, this time it will work some time too.

Vampires usualy are not glad, because They was cursed, but some of them are. Just talk to them to check. I just wanted to say, if you want from people more sense, act more like real being not some possesed daemon. It's all.

To try and keep my companions alive I've taken to telling the marksdwarf I recruited to wait outside of lairs and the rotating melee slot to wait a few squares behind me. Once I stack a few attack/defense penalties on the opponent, then I'll bring melee in. Current melee is a drunk I armed with a spear and shield.

If your melee companion fights from the beginning (s)he can help you get side and back attacks, but is usually mangled for the effort because of poor defense and free swinging AI.

One of other odd things that's happened is every time I drop a bag filled with food and water outside a site before engaging, this bag just randomly moves to another location once I come back out.

How did you arm him? I cant get adv-bodyswap to work with the latest starter pack release. DF hack said it is an un known command.
Buy all containres like pouch, and sell them weapon and then shield. :)

I just spent all morning trying out adventure mode and I gotta agree, it's REALLY boring and obtuse. I spent something like 2 hours running around a jungle that apparently had a dragon, a bronze colossus and 2 Rocs rampaging around and what do I find? Nothing at all. Everybody kept going on about all these monsters packed into the jungle but it's bullshit. The only Lair anybody seemed to know about was miles and miles away over mountains so I spent days trekking there only to realize that the designated "lair" took up about a 2 mile perimeter and I couldn't pinpoint it from a larger perspective using (T) because "you must come down from the mountain first" which is ironic. After running around in circles for ages without spotting a 1 space hole in the ground I ran out of water and was torn apart by a horde of dingos.

This game didn't need to be more obtuse! It's gotten pretty bad when I am literally running headlong into clearly idiotic and vulnerable situations in the hope that something interesting or adventurous might happen.Even having my throat slit in the night by goblins would have perked things up.
Get guide, ask him when you will be closer and closer. :)

It's been almost two seasons, and fire is still razing the hills of Nourishedfloors. Any ETA on when will it finally die out? Quarantine is turning into more than a minor hassle right now.

Usually a fire spreads until every grass- or moss-covered tile on the entire Z-level has been burnt, unless there are large physical barriers to stop the spread of the fire.
Or water?

a river is a physical barrier, dunno about rain. You can make dirt roads to stamp down the grass so the fire won't spread
Last time when i was dealing with constant fire i just flooded it using pumps enginnering.

But if this pick operator is dedicated just to digging, problems should be only during first season or two, right? Later you just mine for resources... It's quite easy as long, as you don't loose this pick. IMHO. Sorry for offtopic.
