This kind of makes me want to try making minecarts for crossbow soldiers so they just fly by, shoot at goblins, then get dumped out and can pick up more ammo... that's probably much more complicated to make work than it sounds though...
ATM it's not possible, they are not shoting (but normal labor dorf with crossbows are shoting just like normal). Tested on dwarwes who was saw before shooting to gobos by wall and restrained gobos on the same level, but in card they was not shoting (worth mention was one not disciplined dorf, who fall out from riding minecart and land badly on ground. He is now on bed in hospital... but i do not know if he jumped out or just something funny happend)

I know a lot of people try the "no skilled dwarfs challenge" or the "single pick challenge" but I'm obviously not that good. But you could try that.
Wait, are they challanges? My standard embark profile is like it, because in this case i have more points for other things. Like, i do not need skilled miner in aquifer zone, the same about masons, stone detailers etc. Carpenter is making masterworks after one year. One pick is pretty god, but you can take just bars with you.

Read legends, play in this world as adventurer, go to fortress when he will fall or your he will do enough. Meybe he will come to your fortress? Meybe your fortress will fall and this badass adventurer will take revenge on undeads, because you want reclaim your military facility? Read legends, meybe this goblinmaster who is sitting in middle of your zoo is father of 10 childeren? You can always mod a little game to make goblin adventurer who will relase goblins heroes?

Make log of your games, read it from time to time. If you are keeping details, like "i kicked Urist Kubuk ass, robbed his weapon and left him in wilds" and he will come to your fortress after two years, and you remember about him, you know why he have these scars... World will be far more intresting for you.

Sadly, this did not work for me, how can i check my dwarfes preferences without using DFHack? I have small rooms, like 5x5 well room, dinning hall 5x10,  statue room with only 10 wallkable tiles (one statue on middle, and all around walls). At the moment i have 20 dwarves, only one courple of migrants is married (they came maried), no babies, only one child (he migrated here).

Try make it in easier way, retire some fort with laver linked hatch, go to it in adventure mode, fly up, then when you are under hatch just fly upward in some side (not straight up). It should left hatch open...

Will doors made from iron will stop trolls for longer than door made from wood? What about quality? Was there any science?

It's been almost two seasons, and fire is still razing the hills of Nourishedfloors. Any ETA on when will it finally die out? Quarantine is turning into more than a minor hassle right now.

Usually a fire spreads until every grass- or moss-covered tile on the entire Z-level has been burnt, unless there are large physical barriers to stop the spread of the fire.
Or water?

Yes, you can choose your dwarf to ride in your cart, even if it's full.
And you can make it one way just by adding a little gap, where your cart will be flying and landing again on tracks, you just must accelerate it a little.

She managed to patch herself up. It taked hour. When she tried to escape by hole, which she used to jump into room, wall was too smoth. Only exit was where beast goed.

Slowly, in completly darkness, she was exploring place. After some time, she found a spear, bronze one, encrusted using bones. After really long time, she managed to find cross with upstairs. There was hatch, she was climbing straight up...

Corpse lord was lying on ground. There was slab too. And many other corpses around, not moving. She was terryfied, she smeeld she's dead. And she heard something is comming, heading to doors. She come back to hatch, ready to flee, and... child show up, crying... Covered in many bruises... Then his arm has been riped away. Then his throat... and corpses show up...

She fled down, she came back to some other room, there was hole too! She climbed up, as fast as she was able, but... Corpses was waiting for her... She remebered her trening, stabed corpse into head and jumped away. Then again, and again and corpse falled down. Cold... But second body just charged into her, knocking her back. She jumped away, but it was elf before... Elf body grabed her arm, whe was strugling, but it bited her into other arm...

She managed to stab elf body into neck, and spear jammed in flesh.

Last thing what she remember was pain in her elbow... and a little later,  she was dead...

I have the same issue. While I do like to play this game again, I keep hitting the same old wall.
Mostly because getting basic needs such as food, drink and beds for every single migrant is a droll task.
My fortresses barely reach the second year, have to be lucky to get to the third before everyone starves or dehydrates to death. (Tantrum spirals included.)
At start, bring some stone/wood with you, cut more trees and set everyone as carpentry to build 2 levels big wall. Then in data/init/dinit.txt you will set pop_cap, set it to 20 or something. Deal with basics on this fortress, just for food, drink, meybe some clothing. If you know basics and you feel them, breach cavern, seal it up. Get comfort with new situation, when shroom can grow everywhere. Avoid caverns, deep deeper, get some minerals, metals. Figure out how it works. Calm, slowly.

if you will feel comfort with things around, just make more worlds where you will try harder things, make better designs. Improve your skills.

and always choose some "your" dworfs, nickname them. Give them fate, extra miner, macelord.... Whatever you like, explore.

DF is a big tasty cake, just do not try eat it too fast, because you will vomit on the floor...

If I recall correctly vampires only come when you hit 80 population or so?
Recently I only play with 50-60 population limit so my fort is always vampire-free.
This is no longer true. My fort never was above 21 dwarves, i have found two corpses drained, one of them is my founder. I am not dealing with him to see, if dwarves will do anything alone to deal with him or he will just leave. Meybe heteness will grow up and they will just atack him alone? I never had vampies not isolated for long time.

On my way to a dwarfen fort i stumbled across a goblin army of  a good dozens including overlord camping outside. Of course i couldnt resist and took 'care of them' after arriving at the forts trade depot and reporting this to the local trader he promptly spit at me and started grieving after those goblins.
Yeah..what? O.o

Took 'care of' taht traitor as well. Let's see waht comes next...
Goblins hate everything on world, in some degree, but they are tolerating everything too... to some point. Some goblins are just joining into dwarven ranks, just because, common dwarves life is better than common goblin life even when you can't eat these elf legs...
