It's not a bug, it's a feature, thanks to this you can defend yourself from enemies just by droping boulders on Their heads. Done twice, worked twice, but it's usualy too much micromanaging.

Does a dwarf's favorite color have any effect on gameplay whatsoever?
I have no idea. Maybe they choose clothes to wear and cloth for artifact making based on the favorite color?
They will get better and often happy though AND They will use it longer without being unhappy if there is no other clothes in this color. This is why i usualy trying to get all the colors from caravans and plants.

But you have to be careful with parts where you later want to build above ground walls because you can't do that on constructed floors.
Just a small tip for new ones, you can still perfectly fine (be carefull for cave ins!) deconstruct those floors and build there wall just fine.

No meter what type of taking care about your dwarf you will use, close to this dwarves willl be unhappy, because They will be missing him. Did you saw Back to the Future? You can order your dorf to ride your minecart (just by closing doors when he will come to your portal section) and then accelerate this minecart... to shot it off from map...

WARNING: If you will come to your fortress from side, where your cannon was... look out for superfast bullets with living meat inside.

There is a way, just make your kitchen and still getting only from close fruit/plants stockpile and this stockpile should not accept any tallow (but fat yes, because it must be changed into tallow, right?)

Automining makes dwarves try to mine the whole vein. It works wonders with ores, but not so much with gems, obviously.

EDIT: You can also designate ores and gems without designating ordinary rock, and then you can simply mark designations without actually mining them.
Is it working multi-zlevel or only one z-level?

Leave something living for longer time, meybe you are in VERY hot place? One my migrants was melted to deatch before They reached my fort.... but other things, like treess looked fine.

@Nikow: Yes, but the complete sequence is actually d-b <mark area> 'd'ump <mark area> and then k-d on each cage. The wiki states you should first 'c'laim the items (which I think might not be needed if the global settings are changed to claim everything, but I won't take the chance to do without), and 'c'laim is the default action under the d-b sub menu.
Thank you, so you are using the same method. I have no more questions. Only optimalization i found is dumping your goods on stockpile and then hauling it by minecart... or just leaving there after reclaiming them back.

When i need to transport a lot rocks for my walls, i am setting ghetto minecart way and my minions are loading them to 83 bars, when i was hauling stones, there was only 5... Minecarts are usesfull to transport other things too - they can transport 10 logs or above 1030 clothes (i do not know exacly, but you can kill whole goblin squad by one minecart who will shot 400 swords/spears in your enemies.

Did some !!science!! with another fort.

1. Created two hospital zones, one containing beds, the other chests of supplies.
2. Forbid all other cloth, thread, soap, crutches, splints, etc. in the fort so they have no choice but to use the hospital stores.
3. Dropped some soldiers 5z to give them some moderate injuries.
4. Wait for them to go to hospital beds.
5. Observe as doctors happily fetched supplies from the chest zone and brought them to the bed zone.

Conclusion: Dwarves are perfectly fine with performing medical labours across multiple hospital zones.
I tested it out too and i an confirm, it's working! I made 3 zones as hospital, one with storage, one with beds/tablets/traction benches and one just for 3 nice, fresh water wells. Then some accident with naked goblins in cages happend in my dinning hall happend... 5 dwarves land in hostpital, They was checked and taken care fast. Dwarves are looking like They love only wells in hospitals, if there is one in zone, even if closer are drinking zone wells.

You can change between prefer drinking zones and zone-only drinking.
Sadly it works for every water-gethering job who was taken AFTER change your setting, so They will be draining your zones when you will set some ponds or for washing or for feeding somebody using water.

If dwarf pathing is blocked to your zone and he is REALLY desperated to get water, he will drink from other source... sometimes...

I'm aware of the filter system and yeah spreading rumors does have a different effect but slaying a full grown dragon might be more relevant than killing a leader.
If you will kill some not related to village beast, even if it's some wild, full grown dragon who live away from civ and eating some wild boars, it's not intresting news... Killing local leader is more intresting, really.

In 40.x version, there is no hardcoded waves.

IF you want atract more migrants make more bedrooms and keep death rate low.
