When you are marking something as forgoten (dumped items are marked as forgoten), They are losing owned tag after 3-5 months (~seasons). When you disable barrels for lye stockpile, dwarves will take away barrel with furniture hauling job. :) And They will not use already stored ones, but they will put buckets "under" barrel.

1. Find RAW for dwarves in your save directory.
2. Change CHILD to [CHILD:1] or even [CHILD:0].
3. They will grow up with next month change.
4. Say "Thank you, Nikow" on forum.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Who can pull levers?
« on: January 10, 2015, 12:28:36 pm »
I don't think you'll get much ‼fun‼ from levers by your gate. Scattering them through the caverns could prove ‼entertaining‼, though.
OK, thanks. I was mostly wondering a) if invaders would be able to open my gates, b) if I close gates and retire the fort, to be still able to get inside in adventurer mode.

Hm, will dwarves or other beings in retired or abandoned fortress pull any levers?
No, retired dwarves are not touching levers.

I always dig at least one huge cistern to my fort asap - channeling/digging to a river, floodgate and lever, channel a hole above the cistern and place a well. As one needs water anyway in oder to farm underground it's wise to plan cistern to lead some of its water to fields.

My method is to dig the cistern, then the tunnel that leads to the river/water source and stop 1 tile before the water. Build floodgate at the end of tunnel and link it to a lever. When you can open and close the floodgate you can channel (above the tunnel) the last tile that separates your tunnel from the river.
Do not build floodgate directly - you should build forification before floodgate, some building destroyers can break it. For example undead trolls.

It depends who i play, usualy i gether all bodies from battlefield and store them in one place, and then start campfire where They are. After this i create 3x3 field of campfires and waiting there to burn them. Just because, They actualy can be raised by wandering necromancer and can be left there. I remember once one of my demigods characters was part of necromancer army, who atacked my fort.  It was not funny, my dorfs died.

Adventurers can pull levers (i think it was under 'u' button). Some monkeys too (two words, r and m, i do not remember exac name).

Dorfs sometimes act stupidly, They are climbing to take down stairs. Sometimes They like sleep on stairs... and this is causing traveling down very fast... splash...

When i saw it first time, i start using hatches every 3 z-levels of stairs. One death in sairs maze (caused by dodge, because my dog was tring to bite my dorf in crowded place).

Your dwarves will get any colectable water who is drinkitable. You can check water if it's drinkitable by creating zone there 'i' and marking it as water source. If number there is not zero, this is drinkable water, so if dwarves can go near it, they will grab some water... as long as you have buckets. The easiest way to make well inside your fortress is dig 3 wide channel 3 levels deep. Just hole 3x1x3. Then make every hole as zone, who is pond/pasteture and make it as pond. Your dwarves will try collect water somewhere, where it's availble (from pools, for example) and put it into made by your hole. This is good solution in case, when you doesn't want spend too much time to make your hospital well and there are rains from time to time.

You can try find some water deep underground... sometimes you will find some intersting pools there. It can be collected by wells from deep underground.

Sometimes you will embark near ocean and your water will be salty... You should pump it to change it into fresh water (one salt unit will spoil your whole cistern, so be carefull!). Your dwarves will be drinking salt water in emergency situations, but They will not be too happy with it. And when you are diging well, remember, it must be filled 2 whole z levels or your water will be muddy (so not tasty and not too good to clean wounds, but meybe with soap you will avoid infections).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Horrified seeing a goblin die

Most fresh soldiers was not killing enemies during World Wars. Just because They was so scared. You know... You was trained to kill, you was shatering dummy dolls, you was sparing for years, but it will not prepare you for real killing. Just not... If you will read stories from war (in Poland There are still people who remember war) you will know Toady is right with this.

You can be tough, hardered by hard work, but this is nothing with comparation to kill somebody... or see guts and blood everywhere. Gobos in DF are not dying because hearth deasase, They are dying because They have fractured faces, legs, a lot of wounds... And They smell bad...

This is horrifing, when you are not familiar with this. Even when you are... this is hard to see. Most smart people can not forgot about dead faces, not without reason, Thet are coming back when you will kill somebody.

In my fortress, everyone is in army. Just because nobody is too important for me. One month without cooking during season is not big dill, even if i have legendary cooker. He just do not go to fight when everybody will be locked inside. He will get "only" lether armor, meybe when i will be rich he will get better one, but every dwarf in my fortress is in military. Just because i always have too much later, as long as caravans are comming, and because when my all front dwarf freezed in first line, my non-front military saved fortress without any loses.  I lost 34 dorfs who did nothing when They taking down one by one.

Everybody training have one big plus, They stats will rise, even when They will never be in fight, They will be faster and more muscular, so They will be hauling things faster. Even leather armor doesn't rot, or is rooting very slow (i can not be sure, because i have always a lot of leather armor), so clothing problem is not my biggest problem.

In know it's prety obvious, but, do you have listed your boots and gauntlets both? :) My dorfs are equipeing all stuff expect shields pretty good, only problem is with miner and woodcuters, They are running around picking up equipment whole time... what is frustrating. And you can try use more layers of robes/cloacks, some of my minions have two cloacks.a

I do not about what you are speaking, i cuted to pieces a lot of them. You just must have good tactics. You have full armor, okey, but how good armor user are you? As steel casted novice armor user you are pretty slow, so They will bash you to death. But if you are sword dancer (light armored, talented dodger without backpack (because you left it on tree)) you can just multiatack quick cut and dodge away. It will take some time, but you will kill a lot of them.

As naked dwarf in matrial trance with only -silver warhammer- i cleared whole tower just by bashing and jumping away.

If i understand you good, just use 'd'esignations, set 'b'uilding/item properies and then 'h'ide logs. It will be looking like there are not there, but your dorfs can hault them later (if They will be needed), right? :)

Minecarts are safe as long as guide and without traveling by z-levels. Dorfs are stupid, and when They are traveling more than 40-50 tiles with They minecarts, They like to "forgoting" about it and leaving it. When They will leave it on ramp... You know, They are not smartest ones, They will be crushed without chance to dodge (because They are looking in other direction, like booze). But on one z-level, guided, minecarts did not made any harm to my dorfs so far.

EDIT: changed [] to '' around shortcuts, becasue [] are used for formating.

I can confirm that, you will not get combat report when creature will drown. This is how 1/3 of my fortress died... in river... just because some not happy urist pulled lever connected to FBL - Flooding baracks lever (just in case, when my military dwarf will be losing because some nasty thingie)...
