(did not read the whole thread)

One thing here, is that right now there is no Origin vs. Steam competition going on. Origin only has EA exclusive titles- that's not competition. And the chances of Steam users switching over to Origin are super slim. From what I read, most people don't like having to manage two programs like that. Who would want some of their games on Steam and others on Origin?

So far the only good thing Origin has going for it is that you can get free keys for Origin if you have certain EA games on Steam, meaning you basically get a second copy for free.

Ever tried Arx Fatalis?

There isn't really an 'outside world' for it though... basically the sun died and so all the inhabitants living on the planet went underground. It's pretty much a giant dungeon crawl, with a high-fantasy type setting- there are humans, trolls, goblins, dwarves if I remember correctly, serpent people, ratmen, etc.

The graphics are a bit dated, but still pretty good.

I don't know about really 'exploring the story of the dungeon', although I guess since the whole game is a cave/dungeon you'd just play the main questline.

The game world is a decent size, and it's separated into different levels. These aren't like actual levels of a videogame, I mean the world is physically separated into different levels/layers, and to change levels you have to go up or down stairs or things like that. I believe there are 8 levels in all.

There is magic, and casting spells is done by making certain symbols using the mouse.

There is a bit of character creation and development, like an RPG... you have different skills and attributes. In this way, you can play different styles (warrior, mage, thief, the usual). The locations are unique and the world is very immersive.

The UI is a bit clunky, but once you figure it out it isn't too much of a problem.

The game is $5 on Steam, and there is also a demo you can try.

Well, support and funding for any action over there has really gone down in the U.S., though I don't know about the UN.

So we're in enough wars I've lost count (Iraq, Iran, Libya?, where else)

Oh come on, the United States isn't in a war with Libya. That would be like saying that in 1941, prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. was at war with Germany.

Kinda, I know, hence the question mark. :) We aren't at war but what exactly are we at with them?

Well, first, there is a rebellion going on in Libya. The U.S. sympathizes with the rebels, and along with many UN nations they have put in economic sanctions against Libya. The UN also imposed a no-fly zone over the area. Basically, no one is formally at war, no boots are on the ground, but people are trying to help the rebels.

... One of my favorite things to happen in a video game ever has just happened.

Everyone is cats.

No, Vector. You are a cat. And then Vector was a cat.

Everybody wants to be a cat!

Life Advice / Re: I've been quite depressed lately.
« on: August 18, 2011, 08:26:22 pm »
First, listen to everyone else. They have tons of great advice. I don't have too much experience with this sort of thing, so listen to them first.

I've never been in all-out depression myself, but there are times when I've gotten very down in the dumps. I recently made this list to help me out and it's been working well.

1. Every day is a new day. Start each one fresh and free from yesterday's events.
2. A man decides his own destiny.
3. Use the opportunities of today to learn something new.
4. Skills become useless when they are not practiced or trained.
5. Do not dread upcoming tasks. Approach them ready and prepared.
6. Kindness, honesty, and honor are some of the most important traits.
7. Seek not only to better yourself, but to better others as well.
8. Any mortal task can be achieved with willpower, discipline, and hard work.
9. Do not look for happiness, let happiness find you.
10. Accept what has already happened. Do not doubt your decisions.
11. Never forget the values of friendship and love.

Hope some of those help you out a little bit.

Also, sometimes you just need to get outside and just find something enjoyable to do. The little things in life are really what makes it worth living. Help people out as well; do good things for strangers. It will make you feel good about yourself, studies prove it.

You think life is meaningless? Well, I'm not going to lie, in it's basic state it really is. But you know what- you're not going to take that! It's up to you to create your own meaning in life! Remember that when the time comes to die, you'll want to be able to look back and know that even if life wasn't all it was cracked up to be, you made the best of your situation and you lived a good life.

Find a hobby. Now I admit, when you're depressed you probably won't take much interest in anything, but just give yourself something to do and something to make you proud. As said earlier, set realistic goals for yourself, you'll feel much better after accomplishing them.

Hope you find good meaning in this, that's really all I can do to help.

Other Games / Re: Elder scrolls V: Skyrim

Personally, I think we can do without athletics and acrobatics.  meh.
Having a ton of skills can be nice for options, but they really don't 'actually' do much.

Diversity is always better in my opinion. Of course there shouldn't be Drinking or Sitting skills, but taking out lots of skills for Skyrim is a bit disappointing. It makes characters much less unique and doesn't allow as much specialization. I can pick up a one-handed sword and use it until I become a master swordsman, and then pick up a mace (a weapon I have never even touched before then) and suddenly be just as deadly with that. It just doesn't make much sense. Gameplay wise of course, you'd probably just be using one weapon most of the time, not switching between ten different ones, so it wouldn't make much of a difference, but it still bothers me.

Another thing that annoys me is that they've taken the Fallout 3 route as far as armor and clothing is concerned (they have simplified armor). In Morrowind, you had boots, greaves, a cuirass, pauldrons, gauntlets, and a helmet. And that still is a simplification of real life medieval armor. But in Skyrim it appears that the cuirass, pauldrons and greaves are all blended into one item, 'armor'. So a suit of steel would be steel boots, steel gauntlets, steel helmet, and steel armor.

One of the reasons this is so disappointing is that if you want to enchant your armor, you suddenly have less to enchant. You can only enchant 4 pieces of armor in Skyrim, as opposed to 8 in Morrowind (pauldrons and gauntlets have left/right versions). And that's not even counting clothing that you could wear underneath armor in Morrowind. So overall, enchanted armor is going to be much less effective, given the enchantment system is the one used to Oblivion.

I recommend this mod to everyone here:

It adds so much more immersion for the game and makes TC more enjoyable.

Alright, Space travel is NOT going to be abstracted. Advanced engines will crunch the time down to about 80 days, but you're still going to have to wait.

While 80 days might be much faster than normal, it gives me hope that all aspects of this game are at least moderately realistic. Clearly this means they are not catering to the average Call of Duty player, which also clearly means they won't have to worry about simplifying the game.

I don't know about anything else, but Rome: Total War runs great on my Windows 7 powered PC.

Don't worry though, you'll get raped by giant ants next, then killer bees, then soldier ants.

Here's a tip though:

No, that's a bad idea. Writing in dusting is better.

8. Not all monsters respect E-word. e.g. elves, humans and minotaurs.

Not necessarily, for that very reason. In some cases, you're going to want to make the engravings permanent. If you happen to put it on a level where those guys appear, they'll end up walking over it and ruining the engraving if it's in the dust.

Forever
Oh god no, game over man. Game over! The Quality of the updates will lower, and most things will have to be bought.

Just what I was thinking.

I guess I never played much TF2 anyways, though.
