name: Zargoth

marital status preference(single, married, widowed or otherwise separated): Single (If i do have a family when they die i'll have lots of tantrums and go insane)
Understood. Will pick someone with as many hits as I can once I fire up DF again.
"Any material for armor and weapon fits(Except Leather)" that is if you will get an armor at all :). Right now we have 10 sets of iron armor and our mine is flooding.
"If i do have a family when they die i'll have lots of tantrums and go insane" single means you can get a spouse, and if you are lucky - she will be a high-ranked senator. Nobility through marriage... Married means you could get children right away, giving you a lot of options for grooming your heir without the complexities of post-mortem adoption. Widowed means no spouse - no problems. unless your spouse arrives with the next migrants wave...

If you can, Could you give me a list of current council positions and people who are on them? I'll know who to ask for things and what they do. Thanks  :D
We are a bit of short on that part. we have
1. me, Royal liaison, overseer and otherwise great guy. Active.
2. Neblime Inkydance, council secretary. This question should have been asked to him. Active.
3. Kerod Picknotch, Landmark Comissioner. Not that active, have not seen any landmark proposals yet. However our settlement is young, so maybe we do not need any landmarks yet...
We had a fortification commissioner, but then he lost his head, so that post is again vacant.
Also Cain Tongstell can become a High Architect, as far as I can tell his prison design was received quite favorably, and I personally like its immersiveness. A few more proposals like that and he could secure that position.

Overall it is a great time to get positions, as even a little service earns great rewards and competition is minimal.

IC:

There also was some little drama on the eastern front:
Two goblins were advancing through dwarves like hot knife through butter. The were slashing and bashing and stabbing. Dang Sludngebzo even gutted Tosid Fathtogum, a father of two, in front of his wife, Shorast Fathtogum. "You son of a purring maggot!",- cried FireCrazy and shot Dang in the leg. Dang lost his balance for a second and crushed. At the same time Shorast, grieving widow and single mom, enfuriated over the loss of her husband to such ignoble death, she frenzied at Dang like a rabid wolverine. With no weapon, no armor, no skills she was kicking and biting and hitting with all her anger and suddenly noticed that goblin is dead, with his brain sipping through a copper helm. Other dwarves, encouraged by this sudden outcry, quickly overpowered other goblin and killed him.
Seeing that his squad is obliterated, goblin leader decided to fight another day and vanished in the surrounding woods.
Overall this battle cost us 2 dwarves dead, including Urist, and several more wounded. Some are quite badly so.
Derpislava slept through whole ordeal in her room.

OOC:

Greetings, I've been reading this for a while and i must say this sounds awesome  :D .
Could i get a male dwarf and could he become a military dwarf, I'll decide what weapon i should train on later.
Cheers  :D
Sure, we will need following info from you:
name
sex
age(baby, child, adult)
job preference
marital status preference(single, married, widowed or otherwise separated).
And I will find an avatar for you.

Urist, you can also drop me that kind of info for your reincarnation. I would suggest you pick a similar, yet different name, so that we could easily spot you, but could track your different incarnations on engravings and artifacts.

IC:
After goblins are dealt with and still healthy peasants started to clear the mess and attend wounded, sentors of the council gathered in the longhall to discuss or situation. The meeting agenda is: what we did right? what we did wrong? what should we do next? Who should be praised and who should be scolded? That kind of things...

OOC: and while they discuss I will update OP :)

Lovers are... replaceable. So heir-wise it is better for you if FireCrazy died now and you could pick someone up once you have a proper mansion.

IC: swayed by great popularity of FireCrazy I decided to send 4 migrant squads east, and only one squad west.
In the hindsight it was a right decision: sprinting is hard and combat is quick - those guys at the south-west training camp killed their goblin quite well:
One unarmed worker got his liver almost removed by the silver two-handed sword, he will likely die long before the end of combat because of severe blood loss and breathing problems.
The two dwarves wihth weapon did pretty well though. some worker with trophy bronze battleaxe roughed poor Ngokang up a bit, but was ultimately ineffective at splitting his head in two:
But there was also a highly valuable Sakzul Astelkel, hammerer, expert clothier, and most importantly my lover, who already killed a kobold thief at 127:

There is more problems in the east though:
two goblins out of three formed a powerful fist and are about to charge FireCrazy. The third goblin spoted Urist McDwarf and decided to go for it, while relief troops are still strugling to get out of warm longhall:
Spoiler: "Eastern Front" (click to show/hide)
I feel that we need to send western squad and one of easten squads to salvage whatever will be left of Urist once they get there.

Edit: And in three swift cuts Urist Mc Dwarf is beheaded:

Edit: Bloody battle in the east is raging, while southward goblin was caught by Sakzul Astelkel. his fate is sealed:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ngoso Smosmmato evaluated Sakzul. She looked angry, and the blood on her warhammer looked fresh, he way she held it was intimidatin. He heard screams in the yard where his fellows were struggling against dwarven horde. His captain was far-far away chasing some random piglet. The fool.
Ngoso decided that it is enough glory for him and he is out of here. He tried to run, but cyberTripping placed a boltin his chest. It is kind of hard to run while your lung is punctured. He tried to run nonetheless. He ran for quite a long time, fighting off dwarves who attempted to slow him down. He slashed and stabbed and ran some more. He was going to the southern border, to the woods where he could hide from the chasing dwarves, and from that scary Sakzul. He could not run fast enough though. She caught him. She did not want him to die quickly. She did not want him to die easily. Once he made it to the last year's battlefield she managed to get a grip of him. She broke almost every bone in his body. Her friends came along too.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And for those of you who wants to know about the incredible exploits of Goblin Swordsman Ngoso Smosmmato:
He was basically tortured in the field. his teeth were plucked out. his limbs were crushed and then chopped off, one by one.
With so many teeth his smile must have been awesome, while he still had it...

so I fired up the DF and noticed the last messages in the log:

I feel that hilarity will start soon...

And indeed. A squad of 5 goblins was spotted near the south-eastern pasture:
All dwarves are ordered to grab whatever weapon they may find and gather at the longhall. Counsil is to grab their quivers and to climb the roof.

Goblins charged straight after the fleeing poultry.  They are advancing extremely quickly, separating from each other. It is a perfect time to sally forth and try to slay them one by one.

The first target is a goblin with a silver two-handed sword, who was so busy attacking a kitten that he ran into a group of dwarves in the south-west training yard. He is pretty far from he collegues:

FireCrazy however decided to go rambo-style: he either does not know where the roof is, or he is trying to get to the iron breastplate someone left at the eastern training yard:

He is against 3 swordsgobs this way. So we should either go for west the lonely goblin, and risk FireCrazy, or we go east to save his ass, but risk getting peasants getting slaughtered by three goblins.

I have started updating OP to more current situation. Not much, but still better then no progress at all.

Yeah, that sucks. I will try to get my shit back together and update the OP with all the relevant information.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I'm having dwarven's block. Help?
« on: December 19, 2013, 10:23:18 am »
I see I have caused a great derailment of the thread. That was not my original intention though.
The image shows my view of the DF gameplay in a nice functional form:
You start your fort, climb steadily uphill, and then hit some straight cliff(first ambush, first siege, berserk miner from previous fort, first lasher squad, first catsplosion, etc...  ). Sometimes you overcome the cliff, sometimes you fall from that cliff too brave it again next season/year/etc..., but you always lose some of your best dwarves(those hanging) and have even more dwarves crippled and slowly dying(those crucified). After eventually overcoming the cliff you see a nice straight path to glory, so you clear up your dead and tread lightly onward, oblivious of the next deadly cliff hidden beyond right border of the image.

now, back to the OP questions:
1. you do not HAVE to employ any or all of the migrants. you can aas well leave them dying outside. Letting them in is marginal in the terms of food and booze they will consume, but can greatly expand your options if anything goes south.
With dozens of miners you will be hollowing out great loads of minerals, with dozens of haulers you will not feel any transportation problems, with dozens of farmers you will export food like air, etc... you can just plug any hole in your fortress with migrant brute force, or just let them party and be happy.
If you start thinking if it a good time to start military - you are probably already late a few seasons. I tend to start military from embark, assining at least two of my starting 7 to train 24x7.

2. you can do it any way you want. no single cure for all ills. value designs are different from efficiency designs. efficiency designs differ from security designs. And beauty designs are quite different altogether, as are themed designs.
As you may have guessed - overall design strategy will greatly impact stockpile layout, sometimes even utilizing "gatling stockpiles" - storing raw materials on the central tile of workshop, ensuring that dwarf des not need to perform a single step to produce something.
You can also assign hotkeys to locations of your choice. This way you will never forget where your farms are.

3. you can butcher turkeys for valuable leather and less valuable meat, bones and skulls. Purchasing wardogs at embark is a marginal thing to do. If you do not have strong reasons to do it - do not do it.
No matter what wiki says - war dogs are never a sufficient protection to your fort. even kobold thieves with copper knives will cut your warhaunds in two with ease. War dogs are usefull as meatshields though, giving you valuable ticks in combat. Even if they often die after a single slash.

4. you should just last through another season. maybe explore how big is your embark? how deep can you dig? how tall can your buildings be? If that is done - try to put reality to the test:if you are a good reader - build everything you read about. If you are bad reader - see what can you design on your own with the tools DF gives you and make a post in the forums describing your findings. For inspiration - check out the sky fort :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to not get terrible artifacts?
« on: December 18, 2013, 07:29:03 am »
You need to make sure that as many dwarves as you can have the needed highest moodable skill. you can check wiki to see which skills are moodable and use dwarf therapist to find what are the skills, with a single xp precision.

Find yourself on this chart :)

Zasit Rigothkogan is the creator of "The Crimson Planets"
All dead dwarves, including Cain's late wife, have been buried in masterwork caskets. We still lack proper skills to create masterwork headstones though.

well you have to assign yourself to a squad mr actuallyplayingthegame, and I dont think the council needs to agree to that one!  I think we can do phasing out of royal hand holding IC, as we go.

Council does need however to produce some squad leader though. While I volunteered to the military, I neither asked the council for military leadership role, nor willing to utilize my "mr actuallyplayingthegame" god-like role to just usurp one.
And since I have almost all of my free OOC thinking capacity is committed to inventing  how to make a multi-player RPG from a single-player rogue-like strategy, I would really be happy to give someone else an ability to earn the glory of a great general :)

ok well, succesion aside, I just thought it would be good if you can just step in if we decide something too crazy, I'll leave you as omnipotent for now if thats ok.
Only as a temporary measure. I do hope we will develop healthy political traditions and will not need a big brother any more. Things like: no cheating, no mechanics abuse, no unfortunate incidents to the political opponents(unless roleplayed), no shortcuts, no intentional shooting ourselves in the foot.

Military service is a binding contract, right? a soldier MUST do what Squad Leader said, and squad leader SHOULD obey what War Leader said, right?

IC:
I would like to volunteer to military.

It looks pretty detailed, convoluted and complex, so I think it represents true democratic nature quite well - a bureaucratic madness. I am sure it will evolve to become even more complex and entangled, so that we will use entire senate sessions to figure out which laws apply and why.
So I think it is a good scheme.

However I dread the ultimate influence and superior powers you assigned to me. It would be nice to tone them down to more earthly levels. After all I am just a temporary(if anyone else will be able to run that embark :) ) overseer, not a High King of All Dwarves...

I actually think that position of Overseer (Royal Liaison) should be severely limited in terms of political powers. You either do politics or  control dwarves directly. It is more of a technical office then an ultimate moral authority. One day we may chose someone else to run the simulation, and it should not come with pre-packaged "political god" mode.

Let's also see what other dwarves and cats have to say about the proposed system and their place in it.

225
I shall Produce a naming proposal at once!
Splendid!
hmm well in that case I think some changes are in order.  While my character sheet addresses all of your questions... I think (if somewhat indirectly) I can see that the player based ones are unanswered.  If not changes, we at least need additions.  Perhaps it's more about our opinions towards other dwarves? not sure.  I'll make some changes and see how it looks.
EDIT - done, please review!
Nice. I am sure you will do a reat job tracking all those +influence :)
The more you guys are involved - the more !!Fun!! it will get.
well while i don't have any knowledge in that area, is it necessary for the game to generate mandates for us?
Well, not that we actually NEED any in-game support for our political system, but I thought it would be cool to have a few custom noble positions that fit our theme. Housing requirements, mandates and exemptions are just additional flavor options... I am also pretty sure there is a way to alter dwarf preferences (which impact mandates)  through a dfusion script. Just an option, you know, no real need to do it...
Maybe we can outline what we want done at the beggining of the year/season, and once we work out some kind of better way of recording our influence (hopefully character sheet related)
That would be great.
Also, as an option - we can try to work in smaller teams: a noble gets his few loyal retainer peasants (maybe friends or distant relatives) and does his own thing with them (builds a house, crafts something, whatever...). Loads of micromanaging for me, but can potentially be fun for storytelling purposes.
P.S. teledwarf how well is your comp handling 13x13? 0_o
13x13? last I counted it was 11x11 :/. is it growing?
it is pretty stable.
P.P.S. not that you aren't doing an excellent job teledwarf, but can you please check whether I (and others if they want) get married/have children at each update?  (since i want to record this now and setup my dynasty!), also is the map in the OP? if so I can't find it :S if not can it be please?
Here is the future of your dynasty: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=133733.msg4808272#msg4808272 no wedding yet though.

map link is in the last line of the last spoiler in OP.
