BTW, will we ever see normal dwarves gaining noble titles after doing something really, really cool? Like single-handely defeating an ambush (saving life of some noble that decided it's a good time to go for a walk) or crafting an artifact steel long sword?
Sure. this fort derailed into a forum RPG, so anything can happen here according to the wishes of players and benevolence of the DF engine.

Also, speaking of benevolence:
on the spring of third year a first wave of true migrants have arrived! 21 fresh dwarf(all adults o_O) is ready to serve the council.
Apparently the set of religious bone figurines lovingly carved by Derpislava impressed the outpost liaison and he spread the word  that our settlement worth visiting.

Edit: Teledwarf met the pilgrims with all hospitality he could muster. After the formalities and exchange of gifts (we presented them some warm beds, they presented us some livestock) Teledwarf took out a big book and started to write down everything newcomers had to tell about their families. Almost all of the pilgrims had their story confirmed by someone in the fort. Except for one gal, who claims to have a family, but just no one in this particular part of the world:

Nothing in her appearance, story or skills give any reason to doubt her. It is just that noone can confirm that she is the one she claims to be. What should we do about her?

While renaming actors I noticed that Neblime and FireCrazy are romantically involved. Are you guys ok with it or should I reassign some dwarves?
I think I will take care not to assign unmarried females to anyone in future (unless specifically asked) to avoid these awkward situations.

Also, it's probably not the case, but have you changed the pop cap in any way? It's most likely that we just got a unlucky embark, but I figure I should ask.

Edit: Fun fact - I am now novice DFusioner! now I can name anything and even alter personalities according to your requests. check it out:

Looks like not all of our council members are quite active. Let's have some schedule here: on workdays I'll try to post all issues requiring votes before GMT midnight and will consider votes to be cast before 7PM GMT.
Of course council members and other actors can post their votes whenever they want, but I intend to fire up DF around 7 PM GMT, so plan accordingly.

Hi can I be a cat?
Sure, but I assume we need to wait when some cat adopts a dwarf or kills something important (and therefore gets a name).
Or can I give nicknames to cats?

We could move this thread to the DF Community games and stories section, since this is pretty much a community game.
Does it provide any of the additional functionality we might be using?

262
OOC:
Also while we are at voting stage: This project slowly turns into a community-driven forum RPG. Maybe you guys know some better media format for it? Single forum thread is a bit too constraining for the amount of communications and documentation(requests of different levels, proper votes, guilds with limited access, various diaries, history manuscripts, narratives, screenshots and maps) we could have. Is I understand: the more of this stuff - the more interactive RPG becomes.
So, what methods of organizing this stuff would you recommend? I can currently think only of a subforum with multiple threads and subforums with custom access rules or the wave format (google had a "google wave", which they discontinued but I heard some other vendors provide such functionality). Maybe you guys know of some other media format that would suit us well? Or maybe I am ahead of myself here?

I'd like to be a different dwarf please. Maybe a fortifications commissioner?
Sure, I have two more noble ladies that are not involved in any frivolous activities yet (though being such a small fort with no migrants so far I cannot guarantee anything in future :) )

If you want a male noble though you will need to pick male migrant and convince current nobles that they need another noble family and you are the best candidate for it.

Speaking of current nobles:
We have successfully extracted some stone and ores from our small mine, but our population is still pretty small. (3 dwarves less then it was year ago.)
So what should we do next?
To the options from previous vote I would like to explicitly add:
change "c - dig for stone, possibly freezing out any aquifer." to read:
c - mine for resources, emphasizing -this-, where this is the ore, stone or other digable resource you would recommend to hoard.
add:
f - create crafts en-masse to demonstrate to the next caravan and hope that migrants will be impressed sooner then goblins.
g - segregate society as is and hope that 8 dwarves can support 7 nobles. Nobles should switch do doing -this-, where this is an activity. It can be military pursuits (24/7 training), politics (chatting in the longhall 24/7) or whatever you wish would be nice to do while Derpislava, Cain, Dwarf4Explosive,  cyberTripping and their few relatives do all the work.
h - create arms and armor for everyone and brace ourselves for inevitable hostiles (after all something in this wood have already eaten 3 waves of migrants before they even arrived to our settlement)

aquifer breaching was successful (so far. let's see if it will remain so in spring.)
We have lost two newbie migrant miners: Moldath Limaruzol and Lokum Uzolrit. They were frozen in ice. One day we will recover their bodies and will arrange the burial.
Also gobins snatched Cain's younger son, Mafol Idenlam. Maybe we need some kind of guarded school for young citizens? A place to experiment with plants and alcohol under the supervision of armed adults?

On a brighter side we now have access to galena, magnetite, gabbro, limestone (probably whole layer of it) and 5 boulders of kaolinite from aquifer horizon.
Maybe it is time to start steel industry? Derpislava claims that she is an adequate blacksmith.

on 27th of Moonstone in the year 127, Derpislava has given birth to a boy, Udil Tulonrurast!

YAY!! Kerod is romantically involved! And with a Sheriff! lol, lady urist also has low willpower.
Oh, did not notice that :)

Urist Mc Dwarf, do you want another lass? or being romantically involved with Kerod is fine? This might add additional RP or it can severely mess with ones ambitions and/or political system and/or inheritance.

Sure a mason would be great, like I said, will take anything, can I ask the name be changed to just "Cain"? The 12 sort of looks wrong.
ok, will update previous post.

something tells me this will get way too hectic the second something goes wrong.
It is going wrong already. The project was intended for hundreds dwarves, but migrants just wont come :(. I wish we had some semi-nomadic hill dwarves we could forcefully enlist...

268
I'd like to dorfed as a noble please.

Fair lady Iden "Urist Mc Dwarf" Akumrith:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well if Dorf requests are still being accepted, preferably male carpenter, but will take anything that is free.
we are a bit short on male carpenters right now. How about male migrant mason instead?
Migrant of 2nd wave, Ast "Cain" Olinasteb, mason-lumberjack

And a little update on our current situation: it is now autumn of the second year. We have just received a note (tied to the foot of a semi-intelligent ravenwoman from mountainhome) that we will not get any migrants. We got similar notes on spring and summer too. So the second year will not bring us any new workers. I am worried that something may be wrong back home. We might as well never get any migrants ever. Plans should be drafted for such an unfortunate chain of events.

Well my vote was really a non-vote, 'all options seem good' type thing, but with the recommendation that we follow through with C regardless of our choice, as it could be done anyway if we have the people to spare.

The question is more of priority, then of whether to do it at all or not. We currently have 6 Proficient to Adept carpenters making wooden blocks, 2 Adequate to Competent growers growing food, 8 lumberjacks cutting trees in the direction of the map edge (making wagon access), and one migrant child helping with the crops.

Go figure if we have people to spare ;)

270
a few IC notes:
our "beloved" king and his crone of a daughter are widely considered "an insane lunatic" and "an ugly rattlesnake" among his subjects(those are exact quotes from the outpost liaison Iden Kogankod, who came to visit us last autumn. He was deeply shocked to  see heirs of noble bloodlines crawling in mud trying to build a wooden hut in the middle of nowhere. His shock resulted in no migrants in the spring. Maybe few outcasts will join us in the summer? If will manage to force them to....)

After all they decided to send only 7 unskilled dwarves with inadequate supplies to  build what can be considered a social megaproject.

Also I would recommend to postpone the appointment rules, as we do not have nearly enough dwarves to adeuately fill public positions without council members. Maybe we can decide upon the minimum adult population before those laws kick in?

War leader would have plenty to decide upon: What kind of equipment to use(type, material). Prioritize quality or quantity(quickly churn many low-quality items with several unskilled craftsdwarves or levelup one craftsdwarf to eventually create masterwork items). What items to buy from traders and what to trophies from fallen enemies to use(bows? longswords? scourges?). Group veterans into one squad, or distribute them to train rookies. when to conscript another squad.

We can also institute many other roles:
Public Works Commissioner - in charge of all large, but relatively unskilled projects (excavate, build a wall, build a road, smooth some walls, etc...)
Rural Development Commissioner - how should rural area be developed?
Urban Development Commissioner - how should city be planned?
High Engineer - in charge for engineering projects (minecart routes, aqueducts, baths, etc...)
Fortification Commissioner - decides where and how to fortify our position. walls, portcullises, towers...
High Architect - creates designs for all buildings.
Mining Commissioner - decides what to mine and when.
and so on...

OOC: DF if full of decisions, and we can share those decisions. In a game where we have to decide for ourselves what a fisherman's  hut is, designing such a hut can be a major undertaking. Or should it be a fishing village with 3-5 huts? How many of those do we need? Where to place them and how to deliver goods to and from them?

I can even upload saves from time to time if there is anyone interested in looking at the landscape on-site ;).
