I actually made this in my DF, 30 Dwarfs on 30 Elfs. Each armed with Proficient xbowman/archer, Dwarf side 50 nether-cap bolts, and Elf side 50 goblin-cap bolts. I'll start it now.

EDIT: 22 Dwarfs survived, all Elfs were killed, several Dwarf shots landed (well) beyond the distance of their targets, but I only saw 1 stray Elf bolt in the water.

I'm going to try and set up my forts like this. Level #s go higher as they go deeper.

Surface Level: Dirt entry hall, drawbridge, Depot, top of central stairwell, farms.
Lvl1: Basic Workshops, Basic Stockpiles.
Lvl2: Barracks, Archery Ranges, Weapon and Armor Stockpiles, temporary Metalworks (wood burning if needed).
Lvls 3-10: Exploratory Mining, 5x5 blocks for 3x3 rooms.
Lvl11: Dining Hall, Still, Kitchen, Food Stockpile 2nd Crafts Shop (for rock pots).
Lvls 12-14: Living Quarters, Offices.
Deeper lvls: Searching for Magma, Metalworks will be moved to site of a pipe if one is found.

i assign goblin-cap bolts to my sharpshooter squads and pretend they are armed with lasers.
WICKED. Make a metal of the same colour, and make a reaction that can make it from stone and/or wood (not both needed!). Make the metal SUPER sharp and SUPER strong and SUPER light and only make it useable for ammo.

You should go in arena, and have two sides, one with Nether Cap, the other with Blood thorn, see who wins.
Or Goblin-Cap, like the OP said.

That's not trading. That's murder.

Plus, it leaves you with a ton of useless crap (exceptional quality trumpets, bars of metal you don't need, etc) that clutter up your stockpiles, and then you have to deal with that crap.

Of course, I myself shouldn't talk. I have yet to kill caravans and loot them, and see the results.

you get to wander from town to town with your magical bag of monster candy.
I sometimes throw mine to the poor.

There is a use though;

1. Eating the hearts of your enemies is absolutely badass.
That'd be nifty if I could butcher humans/elves/dwarves/gobbos in adventure mode.

2. Eating lots of meals every day (3 is norm. the max unless you do a lot of travelling)
I eat breakfast before travelling, stop in the middle of said travel at noon to eat lunch, and before sleeping for the night eat dinner.

you develop layers and LAYERS of lard, which act as a buffer protection zone for your precious organs :D
But I didn't know this before now.

I just downloaded and started running DFHack, but when I try to use the plug-ins by typing stuff like "dfusion" then a plug-in like "simple_embark" it says that it isn't a recognised command. I try typing in the command number. Friendship="4". Unrecognised command.

What gives, and what do?

I've read the armor/weapon/shield material/permissions thing, too. I suggest a major change:

Fledgeling warriors get a copper spear, leather armor and wooden shield.
Regular warriors get an iron spear, bronze plate armor and a bronze shield.
Veteran warriors receive a steel spear, iron plate armor and steel shield.
The aforementioned 250+ kill warriors get full adamantine armor, adamantine spear and adamantine shield.

Oi! I have to regen a new world, because I apparently got a world that evidently has absolutely no iron or coal. Yet the dwarf civs I selected have no coal, no iron, and they still wind up with steel items. What the hell happened, and is there some kind of bug related to that issue?

Axedwarf, Ird Scarcedimples, The Tragic Storm.
Cleaves his way through a whole bunch of goblins, charges the bow squad, starts chopping them up without trouble and drives off  the entire army, receiving only a cut to the left lower leg, and left cheek.
