Who's murdering children?
I meant in-game children. EVERYBODY IS!!! Maybe even YOU! Murderers...

On Topic: I JUST NOW started relocating Dike-Faith's population underground. I can't worry about that at this point.

I have un-earthed Dike-Faith!!!

The food stocks are growing quickly due to the *suprisingly rewarding* fishing industry on the brook of my site. Combine the 101 fish with 69 prepared meals made from flour, meat, other fish, and CHEESE imported half from the first year's dwarf caravan. Those prepared meals, POP!!! They're going to the capital of The Polished Lantern. Fish for dinner!!!

Oh, and the drink supply is trickling up from the 20 digits to about 60-somethin', barely enough to sustain the population of 54.

Relocating the WHOLE FORTRESS to below the ground, using my trade depot mound as the entrance. Profit from digging and crafting has been VERY LITTLE due to previous above-ground goal, so the entire population of dwarfs and non-grazing animals is going underground.

I'm still struggling with a military, primarily due to the fact that LOTS of copper/silver and iron ore has been mined out, and not enough coal was refined.

Build passable stuff (like doors or floors) where you don't want the shrooms to grow.

Stonefall traps are basically worthless -- they might deter some enemies (especially wild animals) or soften something up, but they have no real stopping power.
I call them stone-fail traps, due to the rumors of them doing NOTHING to even rabbits.

That bad?  I haven't bothered building them in ages, and just use a cage-based defense until my military is up to 10 or so with at least novice weapon skill.  I think back when I did use them, they clobbered a snatcher once.  Granted, that was TWENTY of them, and it may have been the dogs chained at the end that dealt with the goblin.

While massed cage traps really do trivialize matters, I absolve myself of using them for two reasons
1) use only light caging to soften up enemies and obtain PoWs for nefarious uses
2) Squads with a caged leader won't flee, and will in fact cluster around said leader.  this can be lots of ‼fun‼ when they don't walk into whatever other bloody hell you had prepared for them and have to send out the problem solvers.  double plus fun if it was a marksgoblin squad led by a melee guy and ONLY said melee gobbo got caged...
THAT would suck...

Really?   Maybe it's not my age but my cave computer adaption that protects me from the pain others feel at microcline, then.
Maybe. Perhaps it's my intolerance for bright light in general.

Sorry if I'm de-railing the thread. Again.

You lost your thread to flame on, don't try to get other threads locked, UristMcHuman.
Bah, these people HONESTLY need to STOP posting about MURDERING CHILDREN. Sorry, I'm quite easy to anger IRL.

ON TOPIC: The food stocks of Dikefaith (an old fort of mine) are OVERFLOWING. Fish and prepared meals are the largest in the stocks, and the drinks are going up ever so slightly at about 60-somethin' finally.

Wood: Anything I can get my mitts on.
Metal: Iron.
Stone: Any stone that does not have a bright colour. Microcline is nice in small amounts, but unlike Tevish Szat, my young 13-year-old eyes hurt like mad when I look at large amounts of an extremely bright colour. No, I do NOT have epilepsy, fortunately.

For some reason I'm picturing seven dwarfers with various skillsets wheeling a cart laden with supplies out to a place in the middle of nowhere they were told has clay, shallow and deep metals and an underground river and starting to dig...

Soon after:

'The Mechanized titan Delta Force has arrived! An armored vehicle, filled with heavily armed soldiers! It has a heavy machine gun and advances quickly. Beware it's 20 mm cannon!'
I'll top that!

The Atomic Bomb Fat Man has arrived! A great round metal ball. It is filled with atomic energy and a device that can split the atoms. Beware its deadly radiation!

But seriously, can we go until New Year's Day 2013 without posting about butchering puppies, killing nobles, and drowning migrants?????

And especially, STOP POSTING ABOUT HEARTLESSLY MURDERING AND BUTCHERING BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Babies, both in DF and in the real world, are as equal as an adult. Take this: Would you like it if you had a kid and some stranger murdered and butchered him/her? And it's just because he said he/she "was a useless part of life and deserved to die". Would you like that?

I SWEAR TO ARMOK that I'm going to ask Toady to make babies/children impervious to ANYTHING POSSIBLE IN THE GAME until they reach adulthood.

OR, to ban you monsters from posting EVER AGAIN.

Does any of the above sound reasonable?

Chill, you take this too seriously..

Are you by any chance related to this guy?
Nope. But nice try, though.

You know what, fine. You do your own little baby-killing and macabre ways of using their bones as raw materials. You go and frolick off in your murderous ways of killing off the local (dwarven) population, and I'll sit here, watching you, no longer caring about what you do. Go ahead. And SEE IF YOUR DWARFS CARE. Your seemingly useless King can befriend the whole fort, and when you kill him, the whole fort will erupt in a tantrum spiral.

ABOUT EQUALITY: Take in effect the part of the Constitution Of The United States. It states that "We hold these Yruths to be self-evident, that all Men are created Equal..." "...born with certain inalienable Rights..." "... and that among these Rights are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness". Think. Men not only means in real life, but should mean in games like this, too. Just, think about it.

Side-note: Your dwarves have thoughts, you know. Killing their children or their noble spouses can lead to a VERY BAD THOUGHT in the mother/father/wife/husband. But you won't care, and then they'll start a fortress-killing tantrum spiral which you also won't care about.
Answer to all of the above: The Necro910 Method.
In other words, killing every dwarf that you don't think deserves to live. CHILDREN DESERVE TO LIVE.

Purchased turtles yield no bones or shells.  You need to butcher an animal a baby to get bones for him.

Fix'd
Really fix'd.

Besides, you can't butcher sentients for meat/bones, let alone YOUR OWN CHILDREN. Children deserve a life, too, you idiot.

I have a similar problem in my oldest fort. I have HUGE areas for mining set up, but only three miners, AAAAND I've been keeping that fort's mountain dwelling to a minimum (tried to make an above-ground fort). I have Copper+20% chance for silver per ore lump (Tetrahedrite), reasonable amounts of coal/lignite, LOTS of iron (all three STONE ores), and two mountains made mostly of flux (sand-covered hill of chalk, mountain of dolomite). Population is about 55 dwarven inhabitants, a couple dozen animals, and the elven traders left with several large gems in exchange for a bin of rope reed cloth, a couple of barrels of booze, and a few bags of seeds.

I've been struggling to get a military set up (I still was fairly new when I started that fort) with copper spears and shields, and copper x-bows and bolts. Because of that, I turned off invaders for a few game years till I can get my small military armored in iron, copper or steel.

EDIT: Food's also being sustained by fishing, but the booze is only trickling in at like an average of 25 drinks. I need to trade some booze from the dorfen caravan this (in-game) fall.

I dunno, Malcador did have a point.

....

WE NEED TO UP THE SOCIOPATHIC DORF KILLIN :D
Down with sociopathism!!! (sociopathic ways)

You guys are already evil enough with the already-evil goblins! Why be evil with your own kind?!?!?!

As a challenge to test your sociopathic ways IRL: Why not kill YOUR OWN KID, butchering him/her, and using his/her bones as crafting materials????? Hmm? HMMM??? HMMMMMMM???????????????????? Oh, and for pets/nobility, do the same to your OWN DOG/CAT and U.S. Senate/House Of Representative members+President Barack Obama over in D.C.*

You should be killing babies, pets, and country rulers by now, "dwarf".

*Or whomever currently rules the country you're in right now.
Tell me, do you REALLY want to suggest this to us?

Really?  :P
Oh, and yes I do.

You'll have to try yourself. Make a 1x1x1 lava hole and dump a chunk of the stuff down it.
