Damn.

I've been thinking about modding in pistols, muskets and hand-cannons, giving my dorfs the hand-cannons and pistols. I'm going to make the pistols twice as powerful as blowguns, the muskets 2.5x stronger than crossbows and the hand-cannons thrice as powerful as crossbows. I'm not making gunpowder, as not all maps have brimstone or saltpeter. I'm not even gonna use charcoal, as that has more valuable uses like fuel. Just bullets and hand-cannonballs, with bullets edged and cannonballs blunt.

I dunno how I can keep the bullets from being lodged in wounds, though it seems typical for bones.

Until then, silver (platinum if you can mood it) makes the best blunt weapon.

Don't you mean 'Mod'?

Dwarf Fortress: Where good things are made from cats, marginal things are done with soap, and bad !!FUN!! things are done with magma.

Dwarf Fortress: Where the lever of magmatic happiness is just around the corner.

Dwarf Fortress: A place where elves become !!elves!!.

My only fisherman (who's quite skilled and effective) is on the brink of a tantrum. I JUST NOW figured out that he's 'very unhappy'. The only house I have is for my town leader. I have NO other rooms and I have a two-level aquifer, so I can't make more houses until I get either more trees hacked down (I have no elven neighbors) or snatch all the goods from my trade depot by forbidding it, hopefully finding a stone amongst the loot to make a kiln to gather fire clay to make bricks for my peoples.

Although trees can grow back, it takes about a game year to do so, whereas clay is there infinitely. So, clay is a more viable option for building materials.

Since I have no elven neighbors, I hope to find another stone to make a wood furnace to both a) Give my people happy thoughts, b) To make charcoal fuel for my kiln to make bricks and c) To make ash, to make ash glaze (one of my immigrants from a while ago had a preferance for ash glaze) to glaze my silty clay and to give my ash-glaze liking migrant happy thoughts.

How do I fix the unhappy fisherman!?!?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Abandoned sites
« on: July 19, 2011, 01:14:11 pm »
I've been running into abandoned places. One town and one fortress as an elf, and two fortresses as a human. The animals in the sites gave it away, though it took me a while in the town as an elf.

I DID NOTHING IN MY ELF ADVENTURES!!!!! Don't think of ALL elves as hippies. *mumbles about stereotypical people*

I've had this happened to me when I was ambushed in a dry tropics area. I wound up in a dry pool and I couldn't get out. So I 'gave in to starvation' and tried again.

Try and get as many scimitar-wielding corsair dorfs as possible. I've used a scimitar in adventurer mode and it seems that they have a much greater chance to sever an arm or a leg or a head.

Or mod the game to let your dorfs make human weapons like long swords or scimitars or halberds or pikes and other crap.

You can wear a mail shirt and a breastplate at the same time!

I know that from adventure mode, but I'm annoyed that you can't do the same with greaves and chain leggings.

Military types:
I always hope to find hematite, magnetite or limonite for iron for my troops. I reserve steel for knights, which position is reserved for the children of nobles like the Baron and higher. If I don't find iron, I usually restrict my military to copper spears and wood crossbow with copper bolts.

Military Ideas:
I have no Ideas for military.

Military soldier types:
Swordsmen, Spearmen, Militia, Knights, Paladins, Scouts, Crossbowmen, Priests, Skirmishers, and in my modded world, Sharpshooters (Blowgunners).

Military armament:
Swordsmen get iron chain mail, a cloth shirt, iron chain pants, cloth trousers, an iron helmet, cloth gloves, iron gauntlets, cloth socks, iron low boots, an iron buckler and an iron short sword. Spearmen get an iron breastplate over their chain mail and greaves instead of chain pants. Low boots are replaced by high ones. They are better protected with their breastplate and greaves, in addition to a full-sized iron shield. Their sword is obviously replaced by an iron spear. Militia get little more than the clothes they are wearing, a copper spear and a wood shield. Knights have the gear of a spearman, except that the weapons and armor are made of steel, and they get a battle axe. Paladins also get the armor of a spearman, made of bismuth bronze with a bismuth bronze shield and a silver war hammer. Scouts get their clothes and a training spear to function as a hiking pole. Crossbowmen get a cloth shirt and vest or coat, leather armor, cloth pants, leather shoes, cloth socks and a wood crossbow (replaced with copper if wood is scarce). Priests get a cloth tunic, dress, pants and socks, leather shoes, cloak and hood, wood buckler and silver mace. Skirmishers get a set of cloth pants, a wood buckler and a copper hatchet. I modded the ITEM_WEAPON raw files and added dagger, hatchet and ax. Sharpshooters get a cloth shirt, leather armor, cloth pants, cloth socks, leather shoes and a wood blowgun (again, replaced with copper if wood is scarce).

Set up your troop types, armaments, and military Ideas in a similar manner as above. I'd like to see what you have and I might try them too!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Enemy Mounts
« on: July 18, 2011, 08:09:51 pm »
Archers on flying mounts are the equivalent of fighter planes strafing your fort. Get AA (anti-archer) sites up ASAP, preferably before 'A vile force of darkness has arrived!'.

I actually saw a post saying exactly this:
"Damn buzzards have been turning my archer towers to bloody AA turrets".

Judging on what I've heard of sieges, I can only give this advice ('cause none of my forts last long enough to get a siege):
-GET ARCHER TOWERS UP ASAP!!! They will be a great help, especially against flying enemies.
-If you find iron and coal, make the coal to coke fuel to smelt the iron ores, and use the remaining coke to forge the iron into iron weapons and armor. Try NOT to use charcoal unless you have NO coal or lignite, because charcoal involves hacking down trees, and the Elves WILL get pissy if you cut down too many.
-If you have no coal or lignite, OR iron, you'll have to see what you can do with the copper from the inevitable tetrahedrite or malachite you'll find. Although copper is the weakest weapon and armor, it's better than obsidian short swords and leather armor, and a HELL of a lot better than wooden bolts and cloth clothing.

I modded my game to let humans use blowguns and I went out to a dry tropical area. At night, I was ambushed by bogeymen. I dared not shoot, so I used my copper dagger (just 'copper dagger', not 'large copper dagger'), and even then I only fought when one was right next to me. I picked up 16 obsidian pebbles I intended to sharpen on my way to a town. The nearest one on my country was across the ENTIRE land. Later, at about 11:20 a.m. DF time, I was ambushed by 3 goblins. Two speargoblins (one a leader) and an axegoblin. I threw one rock at the leader. It missed. I took another fling. It hit him in the hand. Third throw missed again. The fourth shot I took was INSANELY lucky. It hit the leader in the head, jammed the skull through the brain and killed him.

Blasted Human caravan doesn't appear to be coming. And I was hoping for useful bronze and booze...

Don't forget you can send out herbalists to collect plants as well..

I don't have very many shrubs, either...
