DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No raids, no sieges?
« on: July 14, 2011, 04:50:03 pm »
The same thing is happening with my current fort.  I'm up to nearly 80 dwarves here, got this huge trap thing setup and just itching to be tested, and......  no raids or seiges or anything.

I've had like, 2 snatchers show up, accomplish nothing, and immediately leave.

There is a goblin civ nearby, so.... yeah, dunno what's taking them so long.
time seems to be the answer.  seems there is some "marshalling the forces" and/or "travel time" mechanic in play.  the reports ive seen seem to mainly stem from large maps (not embarks, but world maps).  may be possible in a small world depending on distance to the goblins.  this sounds like a job for !!SCIENCE!!

Humans can be pretty dwarvishly sometimes. They ride war cheetahs into battle. WAR CHEETAHS.

does that mean goblins are dwarfy, as they ride creatures from the caverns into battle?

riding a war cheetah sounds like something a panty-waisted elf would do...

Ah, I usually go with glass large, serrated discs because metal ones are a waste of metal (except for the Scenario of Prison, my artifact iron large, serrated disc, it's amazing at lopping off troll limbs, I don't want to know what inspired the weaponsmith to name it that, though)

i have glass disks that lop off ogre limbs with a fair amount of regularity.  i have a pair of windows in the wall around my tower's moat.  on the landward side of the windoes i have a couple of stocked up weapon traps.  i have a mix of copper and glass disks, silver balls, glass axe blades, and a whip or two.  the window attracts building destroyers, and the weapons chop them up.i also have marksdwarves in the tower shooting down through fortifications.  once the windows are down, anything that wanders onto the weapon traps has a small chance of dodging into my moat and eventually drowning.

this happened to me when badits became friendly after i killed a roc.  i think goblins were friendly till my companions attacked one and reflagged our group as an enemy.  or perhaps i attacked despite a "alt+y" prompt.  either way, i did recruit a bandit, and the local human civ became hostile after that.

stibus is more pronounceable than a good many other kobold names, sure

I really hate to be a wet blanket, but there is NO guarantee that goblins will bring iron.  Do NOT count on goblinite.

I've had two forts back to back where they only brought silver and copper; copper armor, silver weapons.  Not that silver is worthless (not by a long shot, even for military use), but if you were COUNTING on iron, well, you'd be worse off than an elf in a bauxite-walled trade depot.
You didn't quite do the research. Silver is best for hammers and bolts in this game, mostly due to weight.

still, goblins dont always bring iron.

You might not even have demons in that spire. Just save before you dig, and if you hit a hollow tube, exit the game, and remine everything around it.

quite true, i waited a long time to start mining my first spire, and i've whittled it down to the start of the magma sea with no incident.  this is on z-40-something i think... mebbey even in the 50's.  my map goes down to -150, so i'm wondering if this spire goes the whole way down.  it does go as deep into the magma as i can see.

the wiki page on raw adamantine (and its talk page) includes some useful information.

Me and my big mouth. Late winter, year three. Vile darkness. 21 gobbo marksmen. Idiot leader ran outside of my burrow restriction to pen/pasture an animal and took about 70 bolts. Died right on my refuse pile. Convenient.

just wondering, what's your world map size? someone else and i were both having out of season events on a large map, with years between goblin actions.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Disappearing porcelain?

perhaps DF failed to designate the materials as tasked out, allowing you to use the same individual brick to designate more than one task.  when one completed, it used up the brick, so that when the dwarves started construction on the next project, they then realised "hey, we dont have the material anymore", and suspended construction.

Since I can't use goblins as an exportable resource in DF2010, is there any point whatsoever in moving the bodies when they die outdoors?
neatness counts i suppose.  i also forget the rules about decomposition into usable bones.  you might want to look into that.

i have a big bunch of corpse stockpiles bordering the road to my main entrance, just to show invaders what awaits them.

I've finally decided to set up a glass industry for the first time. I know more or less how it works, but I have a problem with sand collection zones.
See I've breached the caverns and moss automatically grows on my underground sand tiles. I can't have this if it has to serve as a collection zone.
So how do I go about making sure I have acces to the sand, apart from pasturing grazing animals, the ocasional fire to burn all that moss and trampling?

Also what are mr potato heads or whatever it was you were talking about?  :o

designate a tree to be cut or plants to be gathered in your sand collection zone.  doing either one returns the tile worked back into sand.  as sand collection is a "zone", you can not place a pasture or meeting hall over it, but you CAN build a piece of furniture and designate THAT as a meeting hall.  dwarves, as you might have noticed, have a chance of killing grass/fungus as they walk over it.

i do a bit of work with glass, whenever i need sand, i just chop a tree or gather wild plants first.

I have a fort that's about three years old that's never had a goblin raid or a siege. Goblins are in the [c]ivilization screen and I've seen goblin snatchers (about two a year, probably). The embark screen said surroundings were calm, IIRC. But I'm pretty sure I've had calm surroundings in previous forts with a raid or siege every year. I have 84 dwarves and a created wealth of 453k dwarfbucks.

So are the gobbos just lulling me into a false sense of security or can I start disbanding my military? Is there a way to tell the status/strength/distance of the goblin civ?

give it a little time.  when you notice trade caravans are especially late, odds are goblin-clause is on the way.

13.  Does leather armor wear?  How about leather cloaks/hoods/etc?
For leather, armour items may be helms, boots, leggings (I'm pretty sure), and specifically "leather armor". Anything else is a clothing item.

i'm not sure, but i think i remember seeing wear on my leggings, at least.  traded a bunch of junk away last night, and wasent really paying attention.
