DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Role of the player.

Me, I don't play it. I am an impartial observer with some slim control over those I watch squirm helplessly about far below.

Just like how I approach the rest of my life, really.

I rarely actually get a military up and running.
Funny that. Just locking up the mountain halls and opening the back door for trade is usually enough. It certainly presents me with more of a challenge then actually having marksdwarves. at least, in some ways. :P

When dealing with farm plots, I usually throw around afew 4x5s (anywhere from 2 up to 6, depending on my fortress plant supply) and dedicate an extra plot just for plump helmets, so I always have plentiful amounts for booze and as emergency rations in case, for whatever reason, the cook goes AWOL or is KIA.
I do like "outdoor" plots, as well, since the variety given is nice.
Overall, the time spent working to get covered up above ground plots, and getting several smaller plots up and running, is negligible compared to the amount of time, effort, and value, that gets lost with massive plots like that.
I haven't needed larger plots yet, and usually don't mind the crops lost with the season change since I get plenty spare already.

Someone new takes the stage. Shame. Dwarmin could at least have gone out humorously.

otherwise they will rush out to collect the items the dead caravan was carrying

No dwarf alive can resist the siren song of sock.
The other stuff is just a bonus. Like getting your cake, and finding out that not only is it frosted, but also has jello on the side.

Dear Grytorm,

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?!?

Dear -Urist
The same thing as every other dwarf. We're a mad, maaaad race of xenophobic, nihilistic, selfish pricks. The better question is, what isn't wrong with you, to think that this was unacceptable?

Well, my pig tails can't be cooked, up I ended up losing all of its seeds anyway.  Maybe processing them causes loss of seeds?  I also lost all of my cave wheat seeds and my sweet pod seeds aren't increasing.  I also lost my dimple cup spawn and quarry bush seeds.  The only thing I haven't lost is the plump helmet spawns, which are doing extremely well.

It looks like dimple cup is only used with a mill or its manual equivalent to produce dye.  Since I've never built those before, then It seems that the lack of dimple cup spawn is due to that.

As for the rest, it appears that I do have a few leftover seeds, although not nearly as many as my plump helmets.

As far as I know, cooking or similarly breaking down a plant is the only thing that permanently destroys seeds. When a dwarf eats the plant, or brews it, the seeds are left over to be reused.
Also, I suspect that no matter how large a creature is, if it were stuffed into a cage which were placed under an atom smasher, it would be destroyed. Cages can hold any creature, but all cages are a fixed size, after all.
Not that I know that second fact for sure. I haven't done the !!SCIENCE!! on it, personally.

Although, I think that I might be able to run rainwater through channels into a central cistern with floodgates.  I just need to figure out what floodgates are and how to use them.
Floodgates are buildings that specifically stop the flow of liquids (water and magma) from passing them as long as they're active. To use one, simply construct it out of the material you want in the relevant workshop (stone in a mason's, wood in a carpenter's...) then "b"uild it where you want it placed.
Once built, you'll need to hook it up to a lever, much like with a bridge.
Floodgates for magma need to be built out of magma safe materials, however, or they'll melt.

If animal genders are important enough to you that you need to pay specific attention to them, it's probably easier to just avoid using the texture pack. The game works fine in ASCII graphics, after all. Though you might want to change how engravings show up so that you don't get confused by trying to select an engraving of a dwarf, thinking it's your engraver. :P
More precisely, he left it at 'retract' which is the default. Make it a raising bridge.
Specifically, you can do this by using "w/a/s/d" to select the direction the bridge raises in (N/W/S/E, respectively). The direction it raises in is the same direction that it counts as a wall for.
[...] losing is pretty much the best way to win DF :D
What is this "winning" you speak of? I only know of losing and !Fun!

None whatsoever. Bring up the unit profile for the animal where you can read how fat it is and how long its hair is etc (z from the 'v'iew mode I think). The pronoun there will make it clear which gender it is.

This is correct. You can also check an animal's gender by going to the "z" menu, and selecting animals.
It lists all current fortress owned animals in a downward list. Going across from left to right, it lists name (if any. If not, it simply lists the animal as "stray"), species, gender, and then allows you to mark the animals as "available", "unavailable", or "for slaughter". Available and unavailable determine whether the animal can be made a pet.
Rain water is peculiar - when it's "raining", what's happening is random tiles are getting washed and 'murky pool' tiles spontaneously create water in them. 'Murky Pool' tiles are the only tiles that will do this, so do not destroy them (by digging or flooring over them) if you want rain water. Collecting it is a matter of arranging plumbing to connect to various murky pool tiles.
This is beyond useful to know. Glad I asked. Probably the easiest way will be to drain the pool by allowing it to flood into the cistern and then channeling out the ground near the tile before constructing a floodgate over the newly channeled hole.
Hmm.. That leads to the other question: Will the murky pool tiles still fill with water if they've been covered over with a roof? If it functions as normal ground does in regards to that (ie: if it's been exposed once, it counts forever) or does being covered prevent this?

Not really a noob question, but: Is there an easy way to channel rain water into a holding cistern?
It's going to be the only water I get for quite some time, and I'll need it for everything but drinking.

The dwarf promptly walls himself in on the side that's about to be flooded by the aquifer because I neglected using the "suspended building designation" trick, thinking he couldn't build on the wrong side due to the water flow. GUESS NOT.
What is this "suspended building designation" trick?
I forsee this saving me quite alot of trouble.

Trying a high volcanism, small world.
We'll see what fresh horrors I get to experience while there. :)

That... wow. Dr. Adorable almost broke the meter.
Came so very close... Thank goodness for surge protectors.

Also: This thread is beyond hilarious. The most morally deficient, cruel, self serving, abomination-against-nature loving, sadistic gamers that ever carefully carved tunnels to avoid walking under the sun all discussing, in this thread, adorable ponies. If I weren't wallowing in it all, I'd probably be more than alittle surprised.

Really? did you assemble it yourself? Mine can never handle much more than a stray Pokemon or seven...stupid commercial moe-meters...
Nah. But I modded it liberally, and gave it vigorous testing by regularly viewing materials containing moe blobs.
