I find the best way to wait for something is to erase your knowledge of its existence from your memory until the day it's available. You might not remember, but hey, can't say it doesn't work. ::)

Imagine the enemy's confusion as the dwarves run into battle already shot full of arrows and assorted weaponry.

I have heard it claimed that this means the beast has a blood-draining attack, similar to a sea lamprey, but I haven't tested this myself.
I've looked at the generated raws for such forgotten beasts and they do have the token [SPECIALATTACK_SUCK_BLOOD:50:100] on one of their attacks.
However, several other beasts also had blood-draining attacks along with their special type of syndrome, and one beast with a "hunger for warm blood" also claimed to inject a poison with one if its attacks (but didn't actually define what said poison was).
So there's a chance that the starling will still have a nasty poison or are you just speaking of other blood-sucking creatures?

Oh wow, sounds like a sneak preview of the new version! ;D
Sounds like an awesome beast to start with, and then the blood hungry bit... Sacrifice a few dwarves so you can see the 'blood drinking' combat logs before sending in the military(If you have one)!
Heh, I thought "Oh wait, vampire?" after posting. That would be pretty awesome.

Good to know my military won't die from rot after the battle, though. Based on my knowledge that flying forgotten beasts can come up through wells, I think I'll just station militia well to give it a nice welcome when it gets there.

Edit: Hmm, I'll have to see if I can get some random dwarf to be sacrificed for science. I'd like to see what happens.

As I was happily setting up an entrance to the first cavern level to fight off a forgotten beast, I get this message. I...don't know what to make of it. What makes it different? Don't all hostile creature want to murder my warm blooded dwarves? Is there some convenient place on the wiki describing forgotten beast attributes?

fakeedit: Oh crap, my well area, full of lazy dwarves and puppies, is open to this cavern...

Oh wow. I'm certainly glad you revived the thread LordBucket. I need to see this when it's done. (Haha, I'm listening to Elephant Survival (inspired by Elephant Revival) right now, perfect.)

I only found it after surgery, and I deforbid it. Looks like she'll be going back to the hospital...

Hopefully... they might also consider the issue dealt with.
Actually, I'm imagining that a dwarf (or herself) will notice the dagger sitting there, not stockpiled. They will proceed to casual rip it out of her and run to the nearest weapons stockpile. After that...well, I'm not sure if she'll have a wound, considering it was already treated (and this is Dwarf Fortress).

Excellent, back alive is the farm. I'll see if I can take a turn, but it's seeming maybe a little unlikely since next school semester starts Wednesday(though I'm not totally sure, what with all the snow storms).

I can at least claim a dwarf, though. I'd like a hunter named Kirby. Custom Profession: Dragon Hunter. If there are no hunters, assign a random skill-less (or mostly skill-less) migrant to the profession. I'm sure I'll live for a good month lifetime. :D

Well, I'm certainly glad I didn't watch that. I prefer my horror in the psychologically mind breaking way.

Cue Lovecraft.

Also, though it might be because I didn't watch it, it seems to me cephalo has at least an ounce of reasoning behind some of his thoughts. It might just be my tendency to want to analyze anything ever created, especially in a psychological way.

so, perfect Balistae operators?
Yup. Removes the will for self preservation.
We Dwarf Fortress players would make absolutely horrible great leaders.

Hey, I lost a fort to the exact same square shell wearing, dust spewing, vomit pile! I thought someone would get a hit in before getting exploded, but apparently not. If I recall, someone damaged its shell out of all (two) parts of it.

It's probably already been said, but the hardest thing about Dwarf Fortress is understanding what does what. This is why, if following a tutorial, it can be pathetically easy to learn. If jumping straight in (without the ingame tutorial) you're not likely to know about z-levels, what to do with workshops, how to set up a hospital, or especially how to get your military to train (UGH). There are probably dozens of other things. It's probably also annoying to beginners in that the game doesn't warn you that it might take a while to get used to.

DF General Discussion / Re: Your First Time (playing DF)
« on: January 23, 2012, 03:41:01 pm »
I...hmm. I'm not sure what led me to it (Minecraft? I really can't remember...), but I think I learned of the game through reading Boatmurdered incessantly. My first time playing was years ago, I couldn't say when, but it was after 3D implementation. I don't remember much from it anymore, but I attempted at least three different forts at the time. Oh! Just remembered my very first time playing.

It's kind of hazy and I'm not sure how I got there, but I have clear memory of embarking in the middle of nowhere with "Play now" and just watching my Dwarfs sit around the wagon and do nothing. After that, I somehow learned to dig and failed many times to make forts in the mountains.

Gave up and the game sat in a folder on my desktop for years(maybe two) until I noticed it again. Got the newest version, learned about the wiki, and spent about 6 hours reading for every 10 minutes playing.
