I have noticed that some forgotten beasts made out of materials cannot be butchered. I have one made of green glass laying around and I would like to know if and how it is possible to somehow use it to manufacture green glass stuff.

Dogs and Cats along with various other animals never need to eat anything. Maybe make the cats actually eat some of the vermin they hunt.

Was the space between your crossbowdwarf and the training target he was using a traffic zone? Its possible that the other dwarfs just wandered in the way of his shots.

Stone Pots are wonderful! Now I don't need to wipe out my forest to store all my junk! So yeah. Its nice to be able to wipe out my forests for other things like beds and entirely too many cheap yet effective trap components.

It definitely can and has been done before. I am not an expert on traps, but I have an idea for you. You can start a fire somewhere in your fortress and set things up so that a barrel of booze will fall onto it when a pressure plate it stepped on, thus making a lovely explosive trap! I have never actually done this before however.

So yeah, its plausible. Whether or not its practical is another story altogether.

An elven caravan came. Normally this isn't a big deal but they had a Giant Lion that they were willing to trade for a couple of instruments! Stupid elves! hehehe.

The next time you go around deconstructing buildings, do not deconstruct a wall that will cause another wall to cave in. Especially not when you are STANDING ON THAT WALL WHICH WILL COLLAPSE!! Do I need to micromanage every single project!?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Possibly stupid fortress defense idea

So I got this nice caged Ettin around my fortress. I am thinking that maybe I should chain it up somewhere out in the open near the entrance of my fortress and forbid my dwarfs from getting within its striking range. The idea is that when something such as a goblin invasion comes, they will engage the Ettin in combat. The problem with this idea is that I am not 100% confident that I can get the Ettin out of the cage and into restraints without the Ettin slaughtering my dwarfs, and even if this works the Ettin would likely try to kill any merchants that come as well as invaders. Furthermore I am almost positive that my cats won't give half a shit about the fact that I am forbidding people to get near it and I do not currently have catsplosion problems so I don't want all my cats dead yet. Could anyone give me some input as to how to go about setting this up and whether or not its a bad idea?

Lately I have come up with a positively dwarfy idea. What I want to do is find a map with a waterfall and plenty of non vermin fish and build grates on the waterfall in such a way that all the fish that pass through it get stuck and drown, thus being ready for food preparation. While this seemed like a great idea at first I noticed that the only time I ever see any fish in the upper part of the stream is right after embarking then no more large fish pass though there. Only vermin fish arrive and I cannot think of a good way to separate them from the water since they can go right through my grates. In other words my attempts at making my Automatic Waterfall Food Generator is not going too well. Could any experts give me some advice on the matter?
