DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Why does everyone use the default graphics?
« on: September 10, 2012, 05:00:33 am »
the newer graphics pack is so awesome grass is green, dirt is brown you can see what things are, everything is not weird symbols.

I find the exact opposite is true. I've tried numerous tilesets and although some of them looked really nice all of them made it harder for me to see what was going on. There is just so much information and clarity in the 'werid symbols', some from the symbol itself but also from the colour.

I find it very hard, especially with the smaller 16x16 tilesets to distinguish some of the things apart. As to larger tilesets, well I like having more titles visible so they add a different problem.

a. Warm Ocean World Venus with it's frequent rain and violent storms at equator. A cross between Hawaii, Swampy Florida and Pacific Islands.

Sounds like a nicer holiday destination to me, and we need somewhere to relax while we plan our empire...

Play With Your Buddies / Re: Got Mit Uns- Let's Play Aurora

More aurora games to follow :)
I wish I could bring myself to actually play this thing.

Except now you wont feel like Ubisoft are keeping an eye on you, making sure you play safely and follow the rules in their foam pit.

Considering their track record with uPlay, I'm not sure I ever want to have it installed on my system.
I approve of the move away from always online though.

Edit: In this case talking about the pretty massive remote exploits uPlay had.

The towns mac version isn't available?
I think he means Desura for Mac.

Weird; It seems despite Desura claiming to support all three, and having OS X games up there, the OS X client isn't finished.

Edit: Clarification, Towns has support for all three of course

Is there a way to rotate items your placing? I put down some stairs but I'm assuming they are the wrong angle as people seem to be able to go up but not back down them.

Edit: from the towns forum it looks like direction doesn't matter (just aesthetic) so I guess its some other reason they are just standing on that wall looking silly... :/

It's a pity there is no option to not rate a game and just remove it from the big list of unrated games. I don't really want to have to downvote games that may be good but are not of a type that I would be interested in simply to get them out of the list.

Down voting essentially just does that (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=32641767&postcount=5)

Other Games / Re: Empires of Sorcery (potential MoM successor) Kickstarter
« on: September 04, 2012, 10:03:47 am »
It used to be that you paid for a finished product. Then there was a shift to paying for a beta. Then an alpha.
Now we pay for the concept art and UI design mock-ups.

When we can charge just for design concepts is when I will start making money :) (guess I could just get back into consultancy)

Mostly ptw, not sure I want to donate to this just yet but I'd certainly like a good, and ideally pretty, MoM clone/successor.

Got this on desura (or however it is spelt) the other day but it failed to start under ubuntu. I've not really looked into it yet so it might just be some clueless setting I've got on but was wondering if anyone here knew of 'oh you have to do this' type step to get it running under linux.

edit:I am alive! alive!! muhahaha. GPU still idles at 60+ °C however :/
HOLY SHIT! you'll want that knocking down, else your computer won't last long at all.

I wouldn't worry overly, a few years ago I had a card that idled at over 100c and it's 'green' temperature monitor level went up to 125.
All depends on the card. Don't forget the internal card sensors will be much higher than any heatsink or case sensors because they tend to be on chip.

I'm kinda impressed you managed to hit the item limit at all, I rarely get anywhere close to that before I run out of volume or weight.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Farms are surprisingly productive!
« on: August 29, 2012, 10:23:17 am »
I've not played for a while, and those crops per year seems higher than I recall, but as I was regularly feeding upwards of 200 dwarves on five 1 x 5 plots I don't see your calculations being unreasonable.
As to the dieing; in my experience, again this might have changed, it's only the planting time that cares about the season and once planted they grow as normal.

I'd guess incomplete worldgen/history or one of of the parents died before the other. Might be worth keeping an eye on, just in case it's not a bug and it's something worse :D
Legends viewer confirms their genealogy, thus I assume history is complete.

Can you check that italic bit, or rather the death date of the mother of Kadol, against the birth date of Urdim. It's possible the check for relatives doesn't follow through dead relative connections. I think that is what AutomataKittay is getting at anyway.

Looks like it could be interesting. I enjoyed DoD and do like the steampunk concept so I'm hopeful.
