I remember reading that Dwarf Fortress doesn't have any extra threads, that's why shifting it to one core solo, should work.

The game code doesn't but if you just check a process view you'll see the extra threads, I seem to recall it was three in total. The two minor ones don't use much processor, mostly things like the thirdparty fmod handling sound and the like. However this means by limiting df to one core there is no way it can spread the threads over.

Although thinking about it I'm not sure windows can run a thread on a different processor anyway, only processes on a different one.. so it might not matter :)

(can I be any less sure?)

DF can profit from dualcores.

If you se all labour of the pc on one core and give one full core to DF it WILL profit.
^^

Actually thats the worst thing you can do for dual core. Most (all?) operating systems will shift excess processes off the a core if one is using a lot to try and balance (although with windows you may want to shift df to a second core on startup). however if you enforce df to just one core then you don't benefit from allowing the extra threads df uses (I believe it's sound but i'm not sure) to move to another core.

I actually find excess stone slows my game down the most... I'm not sure if thats just a feeling or if its accurate but it seems that when i have tones of the stuff laying around it goes slower then after i've dumped it all down a chasm...

DF Bug Reports / Re: Stack of Six?
« on: July 07, 2008, 07:49:50 am »
Yeah, even a novice farmer will get 6 of them once out of every 12000000 attempts.  I think the most you can get is 11 with full fertilization and good farming skill rolls (and some luck).

This implies fertilization pretty much doubles the stack size... I think I may have to revisit my farming (not that I ever use more than one farmer as it is.. but still)

Anybody got a D.F. control scheme using four face-buttons and two shoulder-buttons?
Well, you could use the lower-screen to hold the menus and then use the stylus, but still, it'd be tricky.

Actually it would be fairly easy, the touch area is easily big enough for the menus we currently have. I'm not sure the DS has enough cpu power to run DF though, not at the 100fps a lot of us enjoy playing at anyway, and there would certainly be memory issues on a direct port.

Still I'd love to have df on the ds, I was looking at getting an atom notebook just for that :)

Hmm. Am I the only one who thinks slaying a dragon or something oughta get you a lot of something rare and awesome?

Nope, I thought that way too, well at least until I saw how weak the dragons truely were :(

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best trap component to your taste?
« on: June 24, 2008, 05:45:18 am »
I've always been tempted to fill an entire corridor with single glass dagger traps just to see how far the goblins make it. Instead of a single bloody, messy explosion of saw blades and goblin limbs, after a few tiles, they would be dragging themselves along only to have yet another sharp glass implement spring out and spear them without dealing nearly enough damage to kill...

I've tended to avoid traps as a general rule, but this sounds too much fun to pass up

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Indoor waterfall issue...
« on: June 23, 2008, 04:25:22 am »
How can I decrease my inflow so that my outflow can keep up?  My inflow is only one square wide, my outflow is three.  I've been trying all sorts of crap...

Assuming you have some way of stopping the upper flow you could then rig up a pressure plate -> floodgate which opens when the water level on the plate is below some number, this will let you modify flow from 1/7 to 7/7 for the input stream. Make sure the pressure plate is after the floodgate of course ;)

so input -> flood gate -> pressure plate -> waterfall -> output

If you can't stop the input to set that up then widening your output pipes are probably the best option.

Okay so it turns out I have a machine with windows on :) so here for those that want it.

(sorry about the ads, but it's 21meg and I'm not hosting that myself)
region1.tar.gz - 21.11MB

Just a warning, when I started the dragon was about a screen away from my dwarves,
Enjoy

I got a different world. DF 0.27.176.38c under WINE 0.9.59 on Linux. Not sure if this qualifies as a bug. In the meantime, could some unimaginably charitable person upload a proper gen of this world? I was so looking forward to rabbiting and developing underground until I could defeat the dragon...

EDIT EDIT: Now see here.

How did you get the same world in the end? I'm unable to :(

Just ask Toady if he's doing a file flush() operation after each write :)

That said I've worked on many systems that do similar things for logging purposes, windows (despite it's flaws) is capable of handling the disk caching without problems (in fact memory mapped files are one of the fastest ways to transfer information around... not that anyone really cares :P)

DF Suggestions / Re: A way to prioritize mining jobs by miner skill?
« on: June 20, 2008, 11:13:52 am »
Can we tack a 'follow ore vein' option to wherever the proprieties will get setup too :) That way my legendary miner will not only be the only one to dig the gold but will also get all of it rather than one square then running back again.

DF Suggestions / Butcherable option on refuse stockpiles
« on: June 20, 2008, 11:10:05 am »
Basically I want to be able to have a refuse pile near my butcher that will only have butcherable items, I don't particularly want to enable/disable 4000 different creature types each time :)

While you are at it can I have a 'food that gives bone/shell when eaten but not cooked' option for food stockpiles too, would be nice to add that to my prepared food stocks near the dining room. Alternatively just let us have the shell and bones when we make meals, either works.

Is that true if I smelt 1.9 bars worth of iron then start smelting steel? or will it remember the amount of iron as well and so if i switch back it'll be okay.

The FPS for DF isn't actually the normal FPS games show but the internal game frame updates. The redrawing updates are different in some way, which is why you have two maximums in the ini file, so even if it wasn't redrawing the screen often the FPS should still be counting the game frames.
