wouldnt wagon leather just be paper?

the "keep dwarves indoors" preferenced is bugged. lock doors or raise bridges to keep your guys inside. a convenient way of marshally all your civvies is to put them all in one big squad and then activate them when you get sieged so you have direct control over them and command them to hide somewhere in your fortress and lock them in their safe zone.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortifications - harmful ?
« on: October 07, 2006, 02:14:00 pm »
i'm pretty sure i've seen fortifications stop fireballs. not ABSOLUTELY sure, but if its true then forts are a good idea against demons.

i'm pretty sure masterwork crossbows don't affect bolt damage; it only affects how much damage is done when the dwarfs hit their enemies with the crossbows- using them like improvised hammers.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / shell the fast way?
« on: September 27, 2006, 10:00:00 pm »
i've got a craftsdwarf in a fey mood and the last thing he needs is a shell. he claimed his workshop in mid-winter and its now early spring so i started fishing again and caught some turtles. problem is i have about 400 other edible food items and only 10 turtles so i dont want to leave the shell production (someone eating the turtle and tossing the shell) up to the dwarves alone. is there some other way for me to get a shell? maybe cooking the turtles?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Party Fortress?
« on: September 24, 2006, 11:26:00 pm »
those choices leave me with a bit of dilemma as i only have 1 statue garden and 1 meeting hall. would it be a good idea to have 0 instead? also i dont wanna kill the 2 dwarves that are organizing parties all the time because their both legendaries (a mason and a minor)   :(

« on: September 24, 2006, 11:09:00 pm »
i think my fortress is filling up with university of texas kids because some of my dwarves (in particular ALL of my miners) are never available to do their job because it says "Attend Party" in the jobs menu. How do i get them back to work??

DF Gameplay Questions / fey mood not claiming workshop?
« on: October 06, 2006, 02:30:00 am »
i have a metalsmith who arrived 5 minutes ago with the new migrants. he was struck with a strange mood while carrying a wooden log and proceeded to walk to the meeting hall where he is just standing with the log. i have 1 or more of every type of workshop so i dont know why he is idling wasting time and not claiming a site to produce an artifact. any advice?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Augh! Build the damn bridge!
« on: October 01, 2006, 07:53:00 pm »
this happened to me too. i think the problem is not they cant Find a Path to the building but the MATERIAL you designated for it being in accessible for some reason. try picking different stones/blocks/bars to build the bridge instead of the one's you've been trying. that seemed to work for me.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ranged weapons too strong in adventure?
« on: August 25, 2006, 10:39:00 am »
i didnt think about sneaking...woops. but still it seems a little ridiculous that i have this massive beast of a character that giants cant even touch but I still have to drag around a 5 man entourage to make sure some short rat creature with a bow doesnt bring me down in one shot...

DF Gameplay Questions / Ranged weapons too strong in adventure?
« on: August 25, 2006, 09:17:00 am »
hey has this happened to anyone a number of time as well?

i've worked up a couple of pretty tough adventurers (mighty, extremely+ agile, and extremely+ tough) with very high skill levels and pretty good equip (usually iron) characters on adventure mode and usually by the time i've gotten that far i can go toe-to-toe with most of even the bigger monsters like giants and ettins with ease. however, ranged weapons of any kind wielded by anything seem to ruin me. i've lost all 3 of those tanked up characters to kobold bowmen or similar monsters (not even elite! just normal bowmen!) all of whom kill me within 2 rounds of combat so that I cant even reach them before they've shot out of lungs or neck and mortally wounded me. Right now i'm building my 4th guy and I keeping the hell away from anything that can even possibly hold bow or crossbow :-/

Am I neglecting some sort of defensive measure or is it just ranged enemies are a bit unbalanced right now?
