A good fortress design doesn't compromise. The general problem is getting what industry and workshops going without having made a a workable fort already.



I would say that the most awesome fort ever would fit the cliches about medieval forts.

Where [] are towers, and the square on the inside will contain the enveloping courtyard to the main fortress.

You will of course have to have a full moat, a drawbridge, a red-carpeted approach and a hall with a big ass double thrones and pillars and dragon heads on the wall.

Its entirely possible to make a run-of-the-mill Camelot in DF.
In fact I think it would be awesome.

Just dont compromise.

A great way to run the military must be to have a lot of hunters on a biome with prey. Then just draft them. Not only are they productive off-duty, but they can be training their main offensive skill both off and on duty.

Once you get the knack for producing a good military, you don't really need to use danger rooms.

Armor and equipment material seems to be equally important.

My 10 steel clad dwarves fought off two elf ambushes and three goblin ambushes in a ROW just now.

1 guy got his leg cut open. Boo-hoo.

How do I change a ongoing game so that Dwarves eat elves?
