Btw guys, I found out you CANNOT use a Ground Force Training Facility on Luna.  When trying to train units, it never progresses.  So it seems you need population, which does make sense.  Oh well, WE WILL STILL TRAIN ON VALHALLA!

Governor's Log, July 26th, 2026

Both Woden class Geological Survey Vessels were completed in April and have been steadily scanning the solar system.  'Odin' and 'Hermod' were the names of the ships.  Commanders Baily Fox and John Wall were assigned to the ships, due to their knowledge of survey equipment.

The Woden class Geological Survey Vessel's Schematics are as follows:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Research is progressing well.  Research has been completed for the command module, small engineering bay, and small fuel storage.  Next up is tiny engineering bay and tiny fuel storage.  We are a bit less than half way done researching fighter-sized engine technology.

Tons of new minerals have been discovered on Earth.  Hundreds of tons of Duranium, Tritanium, Corundium, and Corbomite have been discovered by our team.  They've completed their study and have been shipped off to Luna to further hone their skills.

Alright, 6 is the limit I'll agree.  I'll also include a list of alternates who can fill in if we lose a person.

What should be the time limit? One week at most?

Do I assume that you're doing this cyclically, then? IE, once you get to the last person you restart from the beginning? I was under the impression each 5 year limit would be a new player as long as interest lasts, like Boatmurdered was.

We'll do what majority vote chooses.  We can either cycle the current 6 players and have the back ups fill in if someone can't do it - or we can just continue with new players until we run out, then we'll cycle.

I'm a bit of a fighter junky as of late myself, as you'll soon notice in the community empire  :P

Governor's Log, January 1st, 2025

Its finally here.  Finally time for me to ascend to the rank of governor of Earth.  After all these years, Earth is united at last.  All five-hundred million of us left, that is.  So much war has cost us over six billion people.  The only good thing in it is that the wars didn't bring about a nuclear holocaust as many had believed.  Nope, all nuclear missiles were destroyed before the Great War broke out.

Near the end of the war a group of American and European scientists uncovered what was the most significant scientific breakthrough of our history.  They call it Trans-Newtonian Science.. with it, it brought new technologies never thought possible.  More powerful engines, weaponry, sensors.  You name it, it brought it.

Before I ascended to my current leadership position, we had already converted all of our old industrial facilities to the new ones.  Mines, automated mines, ordinance factories, fuel refineries, a powerful deep space tracking station, you name it.  Our industrial capabilities are far beyond what was previously obtainable, even with the meager population we now have.  In space, we even have an eight-thousand ton capacity naval shipyard complete with two slipways for ships.  No such ships have been designed, though.

Because of my academic training, my governing will increase the planet's mining capacity by 15%, our factory production by 15%, and our economy by 10%.  No other administrator can match that, that is why I was chosen for this job.

My first act as Governor was to order the design of a military geological survey vessel, the Woden, and a military grade Nuclear Thermal Engine to go with it.  The engine won't take but two weeks to design.  Once finished, the Woden can begin construction.

As for industrial installations, a large number of mines, construction factories, and infrastructure have been designated for construction, as well as a second ground force training facility, a commercial starport, and a military academy.

Two scientists have been told to work on research, each using their maximum of 10 facilities.  Charlie Murrah, a specialist in Power and Propulsion with a 15% increase in research rate, is focusing on researching the military grade Nuclear Thermal Engine, and will follow up with researching a Fighter sized engine of the same type.  The other scientist, Madison Shah, a specialist in Logistics and Ground Combat 15%, is researching multiple ways to build smaller fuel storage, engineering bays, and command modules for ships.

I've also set up a geology team lead by Rear Admiral Morgan Fox to look into finding additional resources on Earth and hopefully other planets.

And so begins my term.

This game is even less screenshot capable than dwarf fortress.. so if anyone wants to see any particular screens, let me know.  I'll definitely post ship schematics, though.

Well I'd prefer to keep it down to that as well, but sometimes real life gets in the way.  Lets just see how fast people post, if they start to slow down, then we'll make a limit.  My first journal entry is about to follow this post.

Honestly, I never saw much point to it. Most useful worlds can be terraformed to 0.00, and the others can be stripmined even if you can't colonize them.

We here at dwarf fortress do things BECAUSE theres no point in it.  :D

354

EDIT: Also, as a pet peeve, could you include a brief description of Aurora in the OP, or a link to the main Aurora thread, in case anyone new stumbled upon it can have an idea of what it is?

Good idea

355
Tap me in.  And I'd like to say that an autominer colony should be granted a name, but an orbital mining colony should not.

Also, let's .zip the whole thing and include a text file or two, so we can write a "changelog" of notes to send to the next person.  A sort of written player history so we don't mess up each other's shipyards :P

I'll add a text file when I'm done with my save.

Also, adding everyone to the list now.  Sir Aaron, let me know if you want in or not, it doesn't matter how good or bad a player ye are.  This is all just for fun anyways.

Hm.. Lets leave planets the same name even with automines, unless theres an actual population on it.

Also, lets NOT rename any of Sol's planets unless by popular vote.

Dunno, never worked with a new species.

But you better sign up soon before the earlier ones are taken, so you can get that species made earlier :P

Welcome to the Aurora Community Empire - Limited Trans-Newtonian Start game!

We've been talking about getting one set up on the Other Games forum, and here it is!

For those who don't know what Aurora is, here is the link to the thread:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=47678.0

The starting situation/rules are simple:
Empire Name/Theme: Terran Federation, Player Race gov't
Trans Newtonian Start, but 0 Research Points and 1 Shipyard
Random number of Jump Points in Sol
Starting year 2025
1 starting NPR and 50% chance at NPR generation
Inexperienced Fleets, Realistic Promotions, and Political Promotions are OFF.
Invaders are OFF until the turn of the 22nd century (2100 AD)
Maintenance is ON

The Rules:
Anyone may join, although if you've never played the game before, its HIGHLY recommended you learn how to play it before you join.

Everyone gets a 5 year turn in which to rule.  January 1st to January 1st.

No cheating (Space Master is passworded)

When discovering a new solar system, you may name it whatever you want.  When colonizing a planet, even if another person discovered the solar system, you may name the PLANET whatever you want.  Colonizing in this case means with an actual population.

When designing ships, missiles, and modules, please name them using a theme of your choice so that we can all see whats designed by who.  Its not required, however.  Examples are Norse themed, Aztec, French, A certain anime of your choice, etc etc.

Don't do anything to destroy the empire.  On purpose.

When encountering a new alien civilization, tell us on the forums about it so we can decide what to do as a group.  Not required, though.  This doesn't apply to aliens initially hostile.

The current list of players:

I would have been in favor of conventional, since it gives time to introduce the game without things getting bogged down in mechanics. But TNE is fine too.

Thats pretty much my thinking, but we'll start with TNE for this one.

I'll get the game set up and the original save posted on Mediafire shortly.

Yea I copied the one with all my save files onto my desktop and copied the fresh save one from the download into my game and now I'm making the start now.

So do we all want 1 npr to start with, or 0 and have them be genned as we go?

Thats the only real question I have left while making this game..

Edit: Oh, and, what site should we post the save on for dl?

I personally like to do a TN start with zero research points. Lets you still be able to build some simple ships at the start, but doesn't give you too much of a head start (it pretty much gives you the first rank of every weapon tech, and also thermal engines and geological sensors). Also, I might have to take a turn at some later date.

Reason I'd rather do a conventional start is that we start out with too much stuff - even if we only give ourselves one shipyard for example, it might start out as a 9k ton naval shipyard.

Don't worry though, in my first five years I hope to have a large amount of our CI turned into TN stuff and I'll get some of the base techs researched.

Edit: Oh screw it, I'll do a TN start for this game.  Perhaps the next one we'll do Conventional. lol
