So, are you guys organizing a game? A Let's Play?
If so, I will be watching eagerly.
I'd also vote for a TN start (we can suspect noobs will be in) but we can give a low starting RP. And real stars, sol start, invaders off for now, precursor and swarm on always, NPR generation at either 0 or 50, go big or go home, 1 starting NPR... No realistic promotions and no fleet training, but yes maintenance. We'll start with a relatively softcore game for now and do more strict later.
We'll just do it on the subforumes here, with a link to the page from this thread. PVP Aurora will never work, because you can't use player tactics against hotseat players. The default "autofire" command is incredibly poor, and will never work to fight a player, so if one person gets a year to play they can just steamroll the other player and hand it back.
The only possible way for PVP would be to have a host running... what do you call that? Remote Desktop? Have them run Aurora, and two or more players log into that computer to play. It would require a dedicated machine, unless you want the whole of B12 rummaging through your computer...
Carronades are your close-range brawlers. Some of the best DPS but worst range.
I meant having public votes for names of planets/systems in the thread, not just of the players.
I would definitely suggest naming personnel (Naval, army, civil, and scientists) after posters if they wish, it's a good way to keep a thread active. Also maybe have votes on naming systems/planets of interest.
Nah I'd rather us randomly find enemies when we explore, not have another player make 'em. The only interactions the players should have is to play their 5 years then pass it onto the next guy, then maybe have another round of it once it gets to 'em.
Your idea could be used in an alternative succession game though.

So, conventional era start, 5 years a piece, any other rules we need to get this community empire started? Besides of course things like no nuking our homeworld just for shits and stuff.
Well, I was just suggesting it because I often have games where I expand to dozens of systems without encountering any enemies.
When (if) you do the LP, I won't play, but it would be nice if you could name a captain of a warship after me.
Aurora is that game where you either get Earth-threatening combat in the first years (like me bumping into the Swarm one jump away from Earth) or don't see another soul for decades.
Aurora is multiplayer in the same way that DF is multiplayer.
And while I can respect a good boarding party, that's gonna be TOUGH to use as your main weapon. I encountered about 30 ships in one enemy battle, which my missiles wiped the floor with rather easily, but you'd need some massive speed and just as many dropships. I think you're going to find yourself rapidly overwhelmed though, and will be needed conventional firepower just to mop up.
Why do you have a carrier for your carriers?
Also I'd suggest that your mothership have spare troops. Don't carry just enough to fit a boarding attempt, fit 2-3x as much. After all, this is your ammo, and you wouldn't go into a fight with one salvo of missiles. And don't forget how valuable replacement battalions are. They instantly remove part of themselves to "heal" another battalion, so sending in 3 marines and 1 replacement can give you quite a bit of effective firepower. You'll still be full health while they take hits. And when you botch a landing, you can repair troops quicker if you have a replacement bat on standby.
