So, are you guys organizing a game? A Let's Play?

If so, I will be watching eagerly.

Aye, we are

I'd also vote for a TN start (we can suspect noobs will be in) but we can give a low starting RP.  And real stars, sol start, invaders off for now, precursor and swarm on always, NPR generation at either 0 or 50, go big or go home, 1 starting NPR...  No realistic promotions and no fleet training, but yes maintenance.  We'll start with a relatively softcore game for now and do more strict later.

I was personally voting for a conventional era start myself.  My first turn will be focusing on getting us into TN so that player 2 and beyond will be able to work with that.

Real stars, sol start, invaders off, precurser and swarm On is something I totally agree with.

NPR generation I was thinking at 50%, and as for starting NPR's I was thinking 0, but 1 is fine too.

I agree with the no realistic promotions or fleet training, though I generally have those on in my games.

I'll respectfully pass on paying to get into SA.  If I had the money to be paying that, I'd be playing EVE Online instead of Aurora, most likely.  :P  We'll just do it on the subforumes here, with a link to the page from this thread.

About half way done with this business class shit, then I'll start the game.

Terran Federation it is! We can vote to change it later if the need or want arises.

I like your previous idea of the Terran Federation, to keep it simple.  And I expect to see phallic-shaped ships shooting plasma coronades at close range into the faces of our enemies on yer turn, Girlinhat.  XD

I'm going to be setting up the game shortly, as well as taking the first turn.  I have to finish up some college work and a quiz first, though.

While I'm doing that, lets vote on a name for our Empire.

My vote goes for the United Earth Directorate, or UED. *Cough Starcraft*

PVP Aurora will never work, because you can't use player tactics against hotseat players.  The default "autofire" command is incredibly poor, and will never work to fight a player, so if one person gets a year to play they can just steamroll the other player and hand it back.

The only possible way for PVP would be to have a host running... what do you call that?  Remote Desktop?  Have them run Aurora, and two or more players log into that computer to play.  It would require a dedicated machine, unless you want the whole of B12 rummaging through your computer...

Carronades are your close-range brawlers.  Some of the best DPS but worst range.

We're not going to be doing that, we're going to be doing a community game, where we all run the same empire for 5 years a piece.

I meant having public votes for names of planets/systems in the thread, not just of the players.

Oh, yea that works lol.

I would definitely suggest naming personnel (Naval, army, civil, and scientists) after posters if they wish, it's a good way to keep a thread active. Also maybe have votes on naming systems/planets of interest.

Yea we need to have a theme to naming things.. either each person has their own theme, or we choose one to all share.

The empire theme at large will be either United States or United Kingdom, so we can have recognizable naval ranks.  The norse ones that I generally use, the ranks are hard to remember.

I personally like the idea that each player choose the name of ships they design, systems they discover, and planets they settle on.
For example, lets say I discover a solar system and name it Tyr.  Player #2 comes along and settles on Tyr III, an easily colonizable planet.  They can rename that planet to whatever they want, as they're the ones who founded the colony.

What do you guys think?

Nah I'd rather us randomly find enemies when we explore, not have another player make 'em.  The only interactions the players should have is to play their 5 years then pass it onto the next guy, then maybe have another round of it once it gets to 'em.

Your idea could be used in an alternative succession game though.

So, conventional era start, 5 years a piece, any other rules we need to get this community empire started? Besides of course things like no nuking our homeworld just for shits and stuff.

Well, I was just suggesting it because I often have games where I expand to dozens of systems without encountering any enemies.

We could always up the npr generation chance.  I think its at 30% normally, we could up it to 50% or higher.

When (if) you do the LP, I won't play, but it would be nice if you could name a captain of a warship after me. :)

Aye we can do that, when we get it started.

Edit: I'll test to see how many aliens I can find with an increased alien generation chance.. I'll simply start with research points, give myself a jump drive and lots of sensors, and go about my merry way.  This way so we can find a suitable generation % so we won't feel like we're alone, but also not so we're too crowded.  I don't want it to be quite like Spore in the sense you have 50 neighbors all pissed at you for not giving them money on a regular basis, so that they want to either shove their missiles up yer arse, preach to you about the will of Spode, or want to kill you because you're not nice enough to animals.

Aurora is that game where you either get Earth-threatening combat in the first years (like me bumping into the Swarm one jump away from Earth) or don't see another soul for decades.

We'd have to prepare for the former, then.

5 Years sounds like its good.  Its a good term length for one leader, I would say.  Especially since Aurora is a very long game, unlike Dwarf Fortress.

I mean generally, the first year or two of DF is often devoid of major combat related events.  For Aurora, it'll be more like the first decade or two, depending on how fast we get out of the system.

The question now is - Conventional or Trans-Newtonian start?

I personally like the former, as it feels so much more realistic, even if it is slower.

Aurora is multiplayer in the same way that DF is multiplayer.

And while I can respect a good boarding party, that's gonna be TOUGH to use as your main weapon.  I encountered about 30 ships in one enemy battle, which my missiles wiped the floor with rather easily, but you'd need some massive speed and just as many dropships.  I think you're going to find yourself rapidly overwhelmed though, and will be needed conventional firepower just to mop up.

I'll come up with an alternative for mopping up.  Something brutal, preferably.  And close range.  Screw this long range missile crap where you don't even get to see your enemy.. we want to be able to see their agony with our own faces!

Also, as for multiplayer, perhaps we could, instead of doing a hotseat where each of us have our own empire, do a community empire game.  We each take one year (maybe more, since its a big game) and play it through thick and thin, then pass it onto the next chap.

What say ye?!

Your ideas are pretty neat, although I respectfully disagree with the plasma caronades and laser batteries.  I imagine vikings taking over enemy ships to get the most out of everything - plus, they love a good old fashioned brawl - only in this case, its more of a shoot out.  Also, you can imagine the marines working themselves in to a berserker rage right before they launch... with alcohol, of course.  If yer gonna die, (and their chances of that are high), might as well die in a drunken rage.

So thats my #1 goal - board and take over ships, when possible.  I understand how the larger ships would be more of a prize than a smaller one though.. I mean, that small one might only be useful for scrap in the long run, whereas the larger ones might have more advanced technology, be useful in combat for myself, or at least a large haul of scrap metal.

Edit: Also, can Ground Unit Training Facilities work without a local population? (Aka on Valhalla, previously known as Luna) If so, I'm gonna just move all my facilities over to Valhalla and make sure to keep a supply of minerals there for their training.

Why do you have a carrier for your carriers?

Also I'd suggest that your mothership have spare troops.  Don't carry just enough to fit a boarding attempt, fit 2-3x as much.  After all, this is your ammo, and you wouldn't go into a fight with one salvo of missiles.  And don't forget how valuable replacement battalions are.  They instantly remove part of themselves to "heal" another battalion, so sending in 3 marines and 1 replacement can give you quite a bit of effective firepower.  You'll still be full health while they take hits.  And when you botch a landing, you can repair troops quicker if you have a replacement bat on standby.

The "Carrier for my Carriers" is a heavy duty, long range carrier, whereas the FAC carrier is shorter range, but much, much faster.  The larger one is meant for the majority of the voyage, as it contains the scanning equipment, repairs, extra fuel, and troop quarters.

You're right about having more than one company, though.. I'll work on designing it shortly.

But if my marines botch a landing.. they're probably screwed.

Edit: Actually, the cruiser is NOT ready for feedback.  It would take a lot more technology before this design would become anywhere near useful.  Instead, I'm going to create a smaller ship that can hold two marine companies and one fighter transport.  With the tech we have, it would be far more efficient.

Edit 2: Ok, the Baldr class Assault Carrier (Much smaller than the fat ass Aegir) is done.  It holds one Fighter Transport, each carrying one Boarding Vessel and One Fighter, and the space for one company.

The technology involved is still very low, but it should be capable of doing it's job.  It has two quad 10c laser turrets each with its own beam fire control, and two CIWS.  Each turret can fire once per minute (4 shots each since its a quad).  Hopefully those four weapon systems will be enough.

Its also quite capable of independent operations due to its large amounts of supplies and fuel, although with its slow speed, the fuel might become an issue.  Thermal engines just don't cut it anymore..
