Speaking of efficiency and room design, is there anyone who can create a good fractal design for workshops and storage?  I used the top half of the H-Fractal for my bedrooms and it looks great!

The problem is if you have a permanent source of magma spilling into a permanent source of water.  I am not very knowledgable about these things, but it seems like it could cause headaches.

In the upcoming version, unless I am mistaken, every map has a water table.  What happens if you accidently dig a whole that drops the magma river into the water table?

It would be really interesting to see a jealous behavior-type in the dwarves.
They might try and kill another dwarf who creates an artifact if he carries it around for years, so it might make sense that he would hide it.

So you don't need to edit any of the other folders?  I thought I saw someone mentioning editing a log file somewhere so it would accept the backups, maybe I am crazy.

Can anyone explain what steps I need to do to create save backups of my fortress? I lost an adventurer game I spent a fair bit of time on to a -3 Inflate error and don't want to lose my new saves later.

Goran, if you look around the forums or the Wiki there is a 3rd party program that allows you to look at your dwarves skills in a spreadsheat.

Just thought I'd say that I've noticed this as well, throwing copper bolts they often fly off either behind me or sideways rather than towards my enemy.

DF Bug Reports / Weird bug with Tanner's Workshop

I had a tanner's workshop taken over by a possessed jeweler dwarf who then proceeded to create a perfec turquoise gem there.  However, I didn't have a jeweler's workshop at the time.  Now, my tanner's workshop has been transformed into a jeweler's workshop, but we are still tanning hides there.  I can't select any other options for the building that relate to tanning, but it seems to automatically create the tan function when we butcher something nearby.  When I try and add orders to the building it displays jewel crafting ones now.  Is this a known bug?

DF Bug Reports / Bug With Doors

I created an outdoor fortress (No mining at all) and without a pick couldn't dig ditches so I built a huge number of wooden doors to serve as a semi-pallisade.  Anyways, when the river froze up I discovered that by locking adjacent doors to the river, I could continue to build my "wall" onto the ice.  However, when the river unfroze my doors are now floating in water, but do not appear to have changed in any other way.  Not sure if this will be affected in the new version or not, but thought I would share.

Just a quick suggestion, as I looked over the forums and didn't see anything but the radar suggestion.

This skill would allow a dwarf to know how far a vein of a mineral would stretch or locate underground features ahead of time so that care can be taken to mine them in the correct place.  Higher skill allows for a larger radiance.

Could need some form of equipment to work also, only a rough sketch.

DF Suggestions / Teaching in conjunction with life-cycles

I have read somewhere that life-cycles will be added to the game eventually.  My idea was to add a matron or tutor class that would perform a number of functions.

1.  Adopts orphaned children and takes care of them.
2.  Teaches children, allowing them to begin adult-hood with some random skills already, perhaps a toggle would allow which skills the matron will teach?  Children can't become adults with a skill-level higher than competant.

You could set a room as a nursery using a "desk" which can be made from stone, wood, or glass.  Children would also needs desks and chairs (Not thrones) to learn.  Toys could also be used in this room by children.

I'd like to see the dwarves play a Blood Bowl type game  :)

Hollow out a large arena, train up your football team and instead of having a goblin siege, they come and challenge you to a match!
