I think that this is the closest thing that we've got to an "official" (and I use the word very loosely) size.
That's exactly what I was looking for, which is important to know when telling my friends about the game.  Daggerfall is also about that same size (161,600 km^2 vs DF's unofficial 155,829 km^2), which is kind of interesting, though I was hoping Dwarf Fortress would be much larger.

Has this ever been discussed?  Do we have an approximation of one tile that a creature occupies?  Lets just say that a tile is 5 square yards.

Are all those caves remotely possible on a default-sized starting area?  The size-relationship to the column chasm makes the caves look like they'd fit in a 4x4 selection area, or whatever the default starting area size is.

This is actually a fairly fast fortress because of the openness of the design, which intended or not, helps pathing.  All my fortresses are always too slow to handle after fifty or so dwarves, and I didn't realize just how much pathing calculations had to do with it.

Great design +1

I haven't been keeping up totally with the next release but the dwarven roads through the mountain-side are interesting.  Does this mean that dwarven civilizations will now build a road to your fortress through the inside of your mountain?

Its not nothing.  Anything made from fanciful creatures is worth more.  Say, werewolf skull totems.

I doubt that.  Adventure mode is currently bugged, as mentioned, and in my practice, so that you can eat mud, vomit or blood without being hungry or thirsty, as long as the aforesaid nastiness was carried with you (on your boots).

Wow.  The Blizzards look crazy.  Did you mod your game?  I've never seen the blizzard effects before and I've walked across several of my generated maps from top to bottom.

I didn't play close attention to weather in the game before, but in your weather.cmv recording, I see that the same tile on the overworld went from hot to warm to rain to snowing in the span of just a couple of days, multiple times!  That doesn't seem realistic at all except, perhaps, on a world like Mars that has a way off-balance axis.

"The page cannot be found."  Broken links?

I don't think you get attacked on the overland anymore.  I walked the span of a couple of maps I generated and no attacks.

It's also hard to find creatures in adventure mode while traveling the world in general.  It seems you can walk for five or ten minutes, going through different biomes, and sometimes not see one creature.      :(

When you do find them, it's like there are hidden pockets of them.  A herd of camels, a herd of zombie elks (that appear to be docile).  No living wilderness - no birds flitting around, squirrels, occasional deer, rabbit, gazelle encounters.  OTOH, Fortress mode handles the creatures entirely different - more creatures than ever show up near your fortress.

Now, to be fair, we were all warned that some of us might be disappointed with this release.

Adventure mode needs a lot of work - it isn't anywhere near as playable as the old version (though fighting giant spiders is something to experience).  *But* Fortress mode is 10x better once you get used to it - I find myself liking it more and more: it is not at all like the sandbox mode I thought it'd be.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Fast walking (running) exploit

In Adventure mode hold S, SW *or* S, SE at the same time.  I'm moving at least twice as fast!  For some reason you have to be moving south to do it.    :(

I've found this only works when I've been given a quest from a mayor - otherwise I don't have detailed maps of the area.    :(

You can simulate armies with Play Now! in a goblin fortress, abandoning, and reclaiming the site.  They're a push over, though.  Apparently, goblins leave just their women behind while sieging.

Goblin strategy:
Leave woman and invalids at home to defend, siege the world!
?
Profit!

I agree.  Elves rule.  When dirty combat is in, they'll be the best for sneaking around and cutting throats, backstabbing and such things.

Goblin fortresses, though, definitely seem a lot easier than before.  Maybe because there are large open portions with goblins.  In the old version, you could be sneaking, turn a corner and get shot through and killed.

I've noticed this too.  Elves in human towns.  I don't know if I like it if it's going to be a common thing.
