Just watch my fortress fall because someone left the security hatch open with a discarded sock while a Goblin Horde was approaching. What kind of dwarf abandons a perfectly good sock, anyway?  Savescum time and hopefully I'll be able to prevent this little sock-based catastrophy.

Siiigh.  A Goblin siege got in past my security arch (up into a floorhatched room, then down again) because SOMEONE LEFT A *CENSORED*'ING SOCK IN THE WAY!  I'm going to have to savescum, but I'm letting the siege go rampant first as punishment.

Sonar is a different technology. It uses Sound to see, not Radio waves. (cant remember the full acronym right now, dagnabbit)

It's used underwater because radio waves are dissipated within large volumes of water.

Deep inside the fort, in an enclosed room with a floodgate and floorhatch that MAY have some connection to the fortress reservoir...  Just in case i'm not in a trading mood, but need their goods.

It isn't dwarven till magma's involved and it's used to kill something.

Soon, someone will tell the managed to fill a cavern with magma without ever actually seeing it using this.

I did that once.  Sealed off the outer map entrances with walls on all sides with teams of masons and filled the whole thing to the brim with magma.  THAT taught those crundles and Blind Caver Ogres who's land it was.

Every year a goblin siege turns up on my doorstep.  Every year somehow about 50 of the 80+ dwarves happen to be outside when i lock the doors.  (if i don't, the others will wander out).  I honestly don't know what those sun-lovers find so fascinating outdoors as i've moved everything inside long ago.  I have a backlog of corpses to bury to rival my last fortress.  THAT one took decades to bury.

You have placed a meeting zone inside, right? Because the default meeting zone is at the wagon, and if you don't put any inside all your idlers will go there.

Yessss.... whoops.  Must've savescummed and forgotten to redo it. The wagon was dismantled years ago though

I just had my wheelhouse nearly finished and ready to divert the local brook through it to get some cheap power.  Then a gobbo siege hit and a horde of trolls went through and broke THEN ENTIRE SETUP.  This is why dwarves can't have nice things without the judicious use of magma.

Yes, as always, Aussie disappears not only when there is some danger, but if the job is perilous, you nearly always seem to be "On break"

For some reason I'm picturing my dwarf adding a "heh, sucker" under his breath.

As building-destroyers cant attack something above them, i recommend building an arch of stairs and hatches (with the "security checkpoint" roofed over, of course).  That way all you have to do is lock the outer hatches and nothing can bother your fort.

Adamantine clothing would degrade over time as well.
only if the dwarves changed into them.

Oh man, if i hadn't seen the you fling Deathsword (and he wasn't somewhat mobile) I was actually gonna suggest loading his bed on the bridge and flinging him to it. Demented minds think alike, evidently.

Also, if you can rig up some waterwheels over the outflow of the pumps, you should be able to get it self-powered so you don't have to worry about an accidental cutoff.  I'd put a lever controlling the wheel's output under the hatch, just in case you need to bid goodbye to the world if you do.
