The fort can do fine because there are all of three dozen living things there, half of which are forgotten beasts.
You are forgetting the not-insignificant near-constant population of goblins on the eastern edge of the map!

I thought they'd left/been killed?

Oh an even better screwup - i found the aquifer in my new fort - it wasn't a layer encompassing, but instead seems to be like a "bubble" in the mountain.  And Urist McMiner whacked it good.  It's current dribbling down the main staircase towards the magmaworks.  And my attempts to Piston the breach shut were met with the discovery that i pierced it on a lower level of many.  After i saved.  Oh dear...

Just had a miner in my new fort go insane and kill four dwarves without even trying before the militia got to him.  That brewer never even saw him coming...

edit:  Goblin Siege turned up on my doorstep.  Killed half the fortress (about 45/90-ish dwarves) because the dwarves decided they all wanted a drink at the river down the mountain near where the goblins were.  The ones locked inside don't mind - their walls and smoothed and decorated.  In one case with the settling of a wolf.  I imagine a town must be on the back of a colossal wolf, or something.

With a fort like this I would imagine that the project was to keep dorfs from killing themselves.
Everything else is extra.

Why on earth would you make anything in a dwarf fortress that PREVENTS things from dying?  Sounds decidedly undwarflike to me...

I see... I've never had any game-crashing problems from large obsidian casting, so this bodes well for my design.  For the record, my plan is to obsidian cast an entire Clown Car visit, so this should be !!Fun!!.

What's the damage to FPS like if you obsidian-cast a large number of Clowns simultaneously? (Say, more than ten)  Game-crashing?  Planning a new fort and possible Device.

Obsidian-casting's a good way to kill them in bulk - cave-ins can crash the game due to a bug involving fire demons losing their fire
