Quite probably.  The demon rush seems to be based on a relatively simple "GO UP" programming command.

I'm speaking more for the strategy of having to only fight 1 demon at a time (or 1 standing up and 99 lying on the floor). The dumb dorfs are more likely to run into the hallway 1 at a time, or to let the fight spill into the room rather than staying at the bottleneck. You want to focus fire your bolts into a small number of demons in order to take each one down quickly.

I did this back in 40d (it was easier then) by having the demons emerge from the clown car and come up a 1x1 stair. A few levels above, there was a large room where the staircase was surrounded by the entire military. I could attack each demon from all sides at once. I won, but I lost all of the melee because I was fighting spirits of fire. I wouldn't recommend this strategy in DF2012 because the syndrome or flame clowns will kill everyone.

No, this won't work.  Demons can and will stack up on the same tile.  You won't get one demon coming out of the staircase, you'll get two or three.  And then another 2-3 right after those a tick later and so on.  Demonsplosion and dead militia dwarves.

If you are able to get sunlight into Hell, it will only be a patchwork of 1x1 tiles at best. Digging up through the SMR layer is why. You can't punch bigger than 1x1 shafts through it. Its easy to do from below, just dig stairs from the bottom to the top while its still unrevealed.

Actually it's also doable through an adamantine vein if you get VERY lucky with its layout

To divine the release date of the next update, you must follow these steps.

First, you must embark on a 3x4 area with a group made of seven dwarves who are all adequate Strand Extractors.  On arrival at your site, you must set the third dwarf down the list as the miner, the fifth as a mason and the seventh as the carpenter.  Once this is done, you must make an offering to Armok in the form a megaproject.  It must violate the game's physics, kill dwarves in the triple digits during it's construction AND it must be made of orthoclase.  With me so far?

When the Megaproject is finished, it must be presented in the Dwarf Mode Discussion forum with the header "I offer the megaproject XXXXX unto Armok".  If it sufficiently shocks and awes the forumites, upon receiving views AND responses equal to the number of dwarves killed during construction you will receive a private message.  This message will have the release date based on the dwarfish calendar.  The message itself will also be written in the dwarfish language.

It looks very much like the game is starting to make fortress self-destruct devices actually useful now! Well, in as much as a self-destruct is ever useful.

Imagine the danger if one of your migrants were a former soldier who immediately goes berserk...

You forgot he'll just get up after the lynching and go about his business, thus making it somewhat hard to toss him into the hellcannon.

That's even better!  We can stick him in the HellCannon as eternal bait for the demons!  We'll never have to re-stock the demon tank with animals or prisoners!

Now that it's been a few days and everyone's gotten a chance to meddle with the fort, I'm going to add pictures to the OP.  That said, could someone with stonesense do me a big favour and take some general exterior screenshots of the place?  Message me with the url to photobucket or whatever site is hosting them and I'll put one or two up alongside my level-by-level screencaps and credit for whoever took them if they want it noted.

You might want to consider flooding that tunnel a little to wash all the demon filth down into Hell.  Otherwise you might get syndrome !!Fun!!  Also congrats on taking out the Clown Car the true dwarven way - the genocide of your own soldiers and animal slaughter!  8)
