I play vanilla DF with ASCII. Howewer I use Therapist and DFHack sometimes.

If you just want sponge out without much work, you can use DFHack and put magma into same square with sponge...

No, in new version sparring can be dangerous. Just minute ago I got raport like "dwarf 1 attacks dwarf 2 with sword lightly tapping target! dwarf 2 skids in floor bruising leg" or something like this. I noticed same thing, skidding, when something big hits to something little. I guess that feature is made as part of minecart-damage-system.

Well, your both hands (or at least weapon hand) must be free. So drop everything you have in hands. By removing things from backpack some items may have moved to your hands. So drop every item or weapon you have in your hand. Then pick it up.

other way is (r)emove items from backpack. That teleports items to your hand.

There's two options.

1. Sleep inside, in mountains, in beaches or with companions. It's best way to survive. Do not give bogeymen chance to attack you.

2. Fight back. Yeah, with skilled and good-equipped adventurter it's clearly possible to kill even large horde of bogeymen.
You need good slashing weapon, like axe. Also you need good armor sand shield. Set your (C)ombat preferences to charge. Because bogeymen are very small, charging at thme will be effective. And lastly, aim always for lower body. One hit to lower body kills bogeymen.
Also, throwing is good way to fight. And try fight against one bogeyman at time.

Well, crossbows are pretty deadly against unarmored foes, but full-armoured enemy with shield should be able to survive against corssbowman, atl east if he has decent dodging and shield using skills.

It doesen't disappear in 0.34.xx. Before that items disappered, but not anymore.

I don't wear much jewelry, but if I find like cool rings or things made from awesome materials, I take them.
I use camp or abadonded building in town to store my valuable things. I often have two backbacks. Another one has weapons and food, while in other there are money, clothes from enemies, things to be sell, books, and stuff like that. I drop the other backback always before fighting.

Silver bolts are quite deadly because of their weight. Or so I have heard, and also saw.

If only useable ore is tetrahidrite, I would make full copper armor and blunt weapons from silver. And lots of marksdwarves. And try get much iron and steel from caravans.

Just make hundreds of 4x1 bedrooms with macros. Dwarves claim them whenever tehy need to, you don't need to assing room for every dwarf.

When I started DF, I used graphic packs, but after learnig game I switched to ASCII. Now I can't imagine playing DF with graphic pack. I just love ASCII. It has so awesome and nostalgig (Boatmurdered and other legends) feeling in it.

It's not difficult, it's boring. I've done it few times. There are really nothing else to worry about than food. You can't drink salt water but you can drink water coverings from salt water.

So all you need is food and patience.

I see migrants just bonus. I have never had any problems with migrants, new laborers are always welcome. Few decent-sized farm-plots keep hundreds of dwarves well-fed.
