DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Minecart assistance
« on: April 29, 2016, 04:29:23 pm »
I need to build a complex minecart operation.

I may need to ask a few questions over time, and I'd appreciate some expert advice.

Firstly, I see that it is possible to make a cart skip over water. Is this reliable? Is there any horizontal movement upon skipping, or will the cart move in the same direction it start in?

Second, if a cart passes through a waterfall and/or small amount of water on a rail does it raise the chance of derailing? Also, would a cart moving at high speeds along a curve that does not change z-level stand a chance of derailing?

I looked through the wiki page, which is like reading a textbook about technical manuals.

General Discussion / Realization: Mr. Tumnus is a f****** thief.
« on: April 25, 2016, 07:31:22 pm »
You guys seen Narnia? In every iteration, that faun has an armful of packages and drops them in fearful shock as soon as he sees someone. I don't see a Macy's in Narnia. Did he order them from Amazon? That asshole stole those packages from people's porches.

This means he's feigning ignorance about that magic wardrobe. He's completely aware of it, and he pops on through every Christmas and grabs a bunch of loot to bring back to his dank little cave. He drops the packages because he thinks that this time, someone came back to get their stuff.

Just look at this shifty son of a gun.

DF Suggestions / Commemerative Coins!!!!!!! NOW WITH !!!
« on: April 09, 2016, 02:43:52 pm »
This is both a suggestion and a whiny gripe.

I would love to be able to choose details for coins in the same way we choose imagery for statues. For some reason this bothers me immensely.

DF Suggestions / Alternate Medical Casting Methods?
« on: April 06, 2016, 04:32:27 pm »
I am currently in a fort that lacks rocks that can be used to make powder for casts. What do you guys think about some alternate, historically accurate casting methods?

For instance, here is a non-plaster method I found with a quick Wikipedia search on the subject. In-game, I propose creating a "cast kit" using two cloth, a splint, and some kind of "starch". This could be made with flour and water and stored in a bucket. It would be far more resource and labor intensive than the gypsum method, making it useful only in areas where gypsum was an absolute impossibility. The "cast kit" would be stored in a hospital and applied to the broken area in question.

Louis' Seutin’s technique
"The limb was initially wrapped in wool, especially over any bony prominences. Pasteboard was then cut into shape to provide a splint and dampened down in order that it could be molded to the limb. The limb was then wrapped in bandages before a starch coating was applied to the outer surface. Seutin’s technique for the application of the starch apparatus formed the basis of the technique used with plaster of Paris dressings today."

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Regarding off-site scholars and bards
« on: April 04, 2016, 08:12:48 pm »
Does the game continue to generate new scholars, bards, and other visitors as your fort progresses?

For instance, let's say you hypothetically start a fort named BLAZECOOKS in the year 01. Obviously there would be few to no travelers to start. But will the game eventually generate travelers from other civs to visit?

Other Games / Pokemon Snap - Professor Oak and his idiot priorities
« on: March 05, 2016, 03:12:57 pm »
I bet his scientific journal has things like:

---
Day 12:
"Obtained photographic evidence of a literal phoenix, rising out of the caldera of an active volcano in all it's legendary splendor, had breakfast, watched Gotham. Must pick up bread after work."

Day 13:
"Photograph of Mew moving unaided in the void of space. Only one is rumored to exist in all creation. Composition of image is imperfect, used as coaster. Forgot bread."

Day 15:
"PIKACHU STANDING ON AN OLD STUMP: RADICAL BREAKTHROUGH???"
---

I hate this SOB.

DF Gameplay Questions / Why no worship?
« on: February 22, 2016, 05:20:39 pm »
My Militia Commander will not worship her god. This has made her Badly Distracted. There is a shrine to her god set up, AND a communal shrine for any god.

Other worshippers of the same god have no problem. She has been taken off training, and is performing other civilian duties. Any idea why she won't pray to Quamun, God of Love?

DF Gameplay Questions / Visitor requirements?
« on: February 20, 2016, 02:46:28 pm »
What are the requirements for having a visitor, and is there some kind of notification? I have had an active tavern for maybe 5 years now, and an active library for 2 (ish?).

I've had no visitors, but I have had multiple caravans and sieges from other civs. It is early in history, do you think maybe other civs need to become more established before the game starts to consider that sort of thing?

DF Suggestions / Vaulted ceiling value
« on: February 17, 2016, 06:37:51 pm »
Multi-level Z rooms are time consuming and often difficult to make depending on the function of the room.

What do you guys think about adding value per-tile to a designated room (bedroom, for instance) if it has open space above it? As it is now, it has to have a roof up there at some point, or it won't let you place many types of furniture or designate many types of rooms.

Thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / Book Library
« on: January 18, 2016, 05:19:35 pm »
I have a library set up with 20-something empty bookcases. The first book was bound, and it has not been placed into a bookshelf after almost half a year. The bookshelves are inside the area designated as the library, and are detected in the [l]ocation screen.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? It's a cherry-wood codex.

Play With Your Buddies / Skyrim Challenge: Blame it on Brand-Shei
« on: December 12, 2015, 02:16:31 am »
Hey folks! Dunamis here, all around good-looker and talented Lady-Wood-Elf rogue. I recently ran into some troubling professional problems. I was chased out of Riften for breaking into the Jarl's wardrobe and walking out dressed in her very own fine clothes. I won't go into detail, but 9 city guards, 3 trolls, 6 wolves and a Khajiit were involved in my escape. Suffice it to say, things got sticky.

I've therefore instituted the BIB policy: Blame It on Brand-Shei.

Brand-Shei, for those of you who are unaware, is was an innocent street vendor in Riften. He has been framed (by some vision of lovliness) for pickpocketing, and resides in the city jail. As a matter of misdirection, I will be planting one item from each major theft or assassination either on his person or within his cell without his or any guards noticing.

With any luck, he will soon develop a reputation as a legendary thief and criminal mastermind, reputed to be able to leave his cell under full guard, travel to any point in Skyrim, and return with his ill-gotten goods unseen. Clearly, his denials are mere mockery of the prison guard.

.....Anyone else have anything to add? I'm down for anything that adds challenge, but most importantly humor to my career as a master thief, assassin, and female hair model.

DF Suggestions / Sanctioned Fortress Quests!
« on: December 08, 2015, 01:37:21 pm »
What if members of your fortress could go on personal quests? It could function through a petition, and the member of your fortress could explain why they wanted to go on this quest and how long it would be expected to take, where he was going, etc.

For instance, a musically inclined dwarf could request permission to travel to friendly towns and villages to learn more about his chosen form of music. A scholar could travel to spread knowledge. A military dwarf could quest for glory.

They could return with additional skills and maybe items. What do you think?

DF Community Games & Stories / BLAZECOOKS III - Human Fort
« on: December 05, 2015, 05:04:31 pm »

Welcome to Blazecooks III!

Our motto is: "Our richest residents have been homeless for years."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a reboot of a dwarven fort that died to due massive structural collapse, which was a reboot of human-based fort that crashed due to bugs, now being rebooted with its original purpose. My goal is for this to be a multi-generational city, and it should therefore span a few hundred years if possible. Since this is a generational fort, and part of the fun is to trace bloodlines through the ages, I've added the [orientation] tag as per the instructions on the wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Marriage) to avoid any sudden halts to any favorite genealogies.

CURRENT CITIZENS

Noble

Clerical
Spoiler:  Erin Quill, Scholar (click to show/hide)

Military

Workin' Class

Deceased

I'm going to be posting yearly updates.  I play it after work for about an hour. It should be fun to see records of a town from the time of its inception in the year 02. I copy-pasted dwarf nobles such as broker/bookkeeper/mayor etc. over into the human raws. A couple names were changed, such as Chief Medical Dwarf being renamed to Chief Physician.

RULES

*There will be no dormitories in Blazecooks. Individual homes only.
*Traps will not be used in defense of the city. They may be used in sensitive areas, such as tombs or vaults.
*Aboveground farming and building only. Mining will be allowed only for the gathering of resources and rad tombs.

Blazecooks III (Asrilem) was founded by The group of Dragons.

Current Population - 183
Adults: 173

DF Suggestions / Vampire/Necromancer Extrapolation
« on: September 26, 2015, 05:04:37 pm »
This has probably come up before, but I feel like after 400 years someone should suspect that the 30-ish looking king is not natural. I feel like there should be something where after he just sort of doesn't age for 50 years people start to look into it, and every year after that he has a higher chance of being caught out as a night creature and deposed.

Maybe it could be possible for them to fake their own death and pose as their son to extend this time, but even that would expire in usefulness after the a few goes.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fun Fact about HEALTH CARE
« on: August 15, 2015, 04:47:03 pm »
I remember there being a lot of debate back when more complex injuries came out, but I never saw much in the way of research. I just had a dwarf fall while mining, and her entire right arm was broken. Specifically, her right shoulder was mangled beyond recognition.

Treatment included the regular cast/suture/cleaning for a broken arm, but she was then put in a traction bench. Her shoulder slowly healed to a fractured shoulder, whereupon her shoulder was treated normally. I don't see anything whatsoever about the mangled status in the wiki, might be good to add it to the Health Care page.

Thoughts?
