DF Gameplay Questions / Magma cancer. It's the only explanation.
« on: January 06, 2012, 03:40:44 pm »
So some soil in and about my main entrance has become suddenly hot. Magma-hot. For no readily apparant reason.

I noticed when some woodchoppin dwarves started having their feet melt away if they walked anywhere near the zlevels above. There is no magma here or anywhere near. To solve this, I turned of temperature and had the affected squares dug out of the map. There was no magma, and the hot soil is gone, so theres no more problems......... but still, any idea what I broke?

::EDIT::
Until I get a better reason, the official hypothesis is that either
A: Magma cancer in the soil, or
B: My steel blade traps are just so powerful that they heat up the earth with the excess awesome they give off when murdering gobbos.

Sounds like somebody fat-fingered the wrong option at the menu.......  :-X

Ahhhhh good. I like the sound of tearing everything to ribbons that doesn't have trapavoid.

Now, is there a way to make em harder to dodge?

12274
Ah, I see. I guess "P" is peace? "W" would be war i take it?

So, the elf caravan got slaughtered by some gobbos. Big whoop. Didn't like em anyway.

How can I tell if their sisters-in-arms are mad enough to stage an invasion? Can I find out which civs I'm at
war with in a menu somewhere, that sort of thing?

Is it worth it to make these things out of steel, as oppossed to iron? I mean, clearly steel is better as a general rule, but is it THAT much of a difference?

I've embarked in an area with almost no precious metals i.e gold silver etc. But i'm overflowing in heatite, limonite and magnetite. Also, the most common stone is dolomite. So the availiability isn't an issue. Just wondering.

We dwarves know the TRUE value of stuffing oneself with an endless supply of gourmet one-man banquets. Lesser races just don't understand the importance of such things.

Actually, I hit the cavern at 11z. I decided to continue, and simply walled up the pit in the pattern of the floor above it, sealing it from the cavern layer, then continued onward to 16 (my next cavern layer's ceiling).

No gum durned wonder of nature is going to stand between THIS dwarf and his engineering project. Also, the spikes are in place. 5 to a tile.

Ok, so. From this discussion I have gathered:

1:Survival of the enemy is acceptable, as long as extreme, long lasting suffering is involved. Entertainment value is a +.

2:This fall should kill goblins. Upon further finger-counting, it was 9z at the time. They hadn't dug out the rest. The more
recent invasion has shown that 12 is indeed enough to instagib goblins.

3:It needs more spikes. Mechanical Spikes. Fully neccessary spikes.

Now then. Can I hook up spikes to a watermill, so as to have it stab things indefinately?

I've got some blade traps set up. Something either steps on it and cut to ribbons, or dodges into a pit. The pit is 12z levels deep, but I get things surviving sometimes.

This is unacceptable.

I think a good solution is to fill the bottom with spikes. Now, how many spikes per tile is neccesary? Will an impact at high speeds with a single spike cause death? Also, can something dodge the spikes on the way down? Lastly, does dodging into a pit (as oppossed to having the bridge dissapear beneath your feet) somehow lessen falling damage?

Alright, guys. It's time to build my first pump stack for magma. I've got a fairly good idea how to do this. The wiki helps alot. Now, a few questions i didn't find on the wiki:

1: Will a magma man or its equivalent come along every do often and bash apart the bottom pump? If so, how can I prevent this?

2: Can I hook a stack of pumps up to a lever, and just have a dwarf pull the lever repeatedly? I've got a U.R.I.S.T AI setup. It doesn't do much with its day.
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Stupid_dwarf_trick#U.R.I.S.T._Artificial_Intelligence

3: The wiki talks about using gear assemblies to cut off the power so as not to flood everything with lava. I do not understand gear assemblies. How can I shut off the power to my pumps without having them collapse?

Disarm the gobbos first. Also, make the entrance to the labyrinth a pit, say, 5z levels down? This will break their legs.  +Points for throwing elves into the labyrinth instead of goblins.

We hates elves.

right right, a failsafe, i gotcha.

I also wall my broker in a little room by himself with a barrel or two of food and booze and a puzzlebox. I only let him out to trade. The tie in is that if my fortress has a sudden, unexpected influx of fun, nothing can get to him and the next wave of migrants can repopulate. Gee I really over-explain things alot.  :-\
