General Discussion / Re: Things that made you mildly upset today thread

Biblical works are subtly different; there's a long historical battle over if the Bible is the literal words of God, or is instead divinely inspired.  There's a long history that it's the latter; it is my understanding that the "literal words" view is relatively new in a historical context (and is often foolish, because that view tends to be linked to a specific translation which isn't even the original language.)

While the organized religion side of Christianity has fought over this for generations, because we will generally fight over absolutely anything that can be fought about, the usual doctrine that I hear about the Bible is that they are one and the same in a practical sense. God did not literally float down here to put pen to some pages, but did have a direct hand in it via divinely influencing the folks that wrote it. The word inspiration is intended in the "directly influenced by an outside source" meaning. It is therefore irrelevant as to whether or not he legit wrote it word for word. Word of God either way.

The "correct" way of handling a conflict between oneself and scripture is that if you believe that it is divine in any capacity, and something you believe does not jibe with scripture, then your understanding or interpretation is at fault, not the divinely omniscient book. These days it feels like the majority of American Christendom believes that theology peaked in the 50's and any attempt to think otherwise is an affront, since clearly God created the Bible with the specific intent that it lead up for thousands of years in order to benefit boomers, aka the REAL Christians.

I'd heard about the baptism thing, but haven't looked into the details at all. Baptism is a public affirmation of one's belief, not a thing you can get of the shelf that has to be sold by an ordained priest. That part is merely tradition, albeit strong tradition, the idea being that you'd generally want someone in a position of theological authority to perform it on account of its personal importance. Silly if the church is declaring baptisms "invalid" over something like that.

Question for our mushroom gurus.

Someone has given me a recipe that involves undried morel mushrooms. However, these often contain worms is what both they and the internet tell me. I have discovered that this is a mental squicky that I cannot overcome. What would a good replacement be? Oyster mushrooms seem to be what google thinks.

I'll never understand why someone would do something so petty and violent like this, and then film themselves. Like how disconnected do you have to be in order to make no connection between this and consequences, let alone the morality of it? And yeah, relatively small fines are a way to legitimize the club's stance against it. Makes sense.

I feel like 4 whole years would be a bit harsh, even if it is a reprehensible thing this guy did. I did a mild google and other things that have a 5 year sentence can include hate crimes, or even sex crimes (in the US). The asshole should get the everliving shit fined out of him at a bare minimum though, and not be allowed to own any more animals.

Edited, good point.

A class action lawsuit is being decided in my favor, which provides me with a distinct sense of justice.

FFS, I'm sorry to hear that Kagus. I hope it was just inattentiveness at the worst possible time, or something.

Are you ok?

Did he stop answering that abruptly? There is a chance he is not answering because he is in intensive care, not that that would be much better, besides it's speculation. In any case he deserved much better... Don't want to put words in his mouth but I feel like his IRL peebs gave him a giant scoop of neglect once the outcome was more or less clear.  :( heartbreaking
Indeed that happened. He told me that once his situation worsened people close to him basically vanished. Keep talking to him for like the last 2 years via PM's here. Some months ago he spent a week and some in intensive care and stoped replying, that is peharps the other time you mention I was worried. But this time is different, and its well over a month now.

Why the fuck someone would stop being friend of someone else because that person is dying? Unless is from a zombie plague there is no excuse man. I dont joke when I say lots of you here are considered friends by me.

Do hope he someday logs back and say "had a several months intensive care visit but Im better now", but the reallity is most likely very different.

I hope so too. I hope we all provided (or are providing) some sort of sense of community to them. Noone should be alone that way.

Yeah, all of the new functionality is 100% free, including the new weapons. The DLC bit gives reskinned weapons and some cosmetic blocks.

I've never done a tourist mission, I'll look into that. Good tip. I have a dolphin, would an orca etc be preferable?

I have a bounty hunting ship and that's basically my bread and butter.

I still enjoy the space combat immensely. Krait II all souped up is a thing to reckon with. I generally make 10-20 mil per mission run for bounties. Only problem is that grinding federation rep is so goddam slow. And I hear they're gonna revamp engineering too, which is a relief.
