I was able to decipher ASCII since I was ten..And I'm actually part of the newer Generation.
ASCII allows for a LOT more freedom.
to that I agree the only reason I dont use it is because I hate rectangles, makes my fort designs look really odd
the default ASCII tileset comes with a square variation- "curses_square_16x16"- you can tell the people who use it because they have those smileys instead of proper bearded dwarves.
curses_square_16x16 is ugly. Like, really ugly. Do I need to fiddle with the options to make it look right? What are the inits for using square_16x16?

I've found that when using it, you have to use reveal, then use the prospector whilst everything is revealed.
EDIT:
Yep, I was just being stupid. Now I have so much lignite and crap I have no idea what to do with it, and metals will probably be 50% of my mined-out materials.

Well, if it regenerates too fast, someone can probably mod it to make it slower.
And the engine probably defines "outside combat" as "<number that would make you not see the enemy> yards away."

I wouldn't want skills to affect building, mining and stuff. Then it gets into grinding territory because people mine all the time. Combat is okay, it needs a revamp, but messing with mining and stuff would be annoying.

Not really died, but failed epically:
Tried to make a water distilling plant using uranium and noble gas; used liquid oxygen to freeze the water. Opened the tap, and it electrified all the water.
