Thats the very reason why having a proficient plumber for a construction supervisor is still handy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What do you buy with fortress wealth?
« on: December 29, 2007, 02:05:00 pm »
I play a custom race that has the carnivore tag so I typically buy meat and fish since farming doesn't work for me.

I can usually manage off of hunting and fishing but the traders bring in some extra insurance.  I occasionally buy some rope reed too, since it's overkill to make a farm just for a couple sand bags.

There should be something like that in the "o"(options) menu.  It should be listed as dwarves can go outside.  Whenever you change it it will tell you what the current orders are.  It goes from everyone can go outside, soldiers can go outside, and nobody can go outside.

You'll have to lock the doors manually though.  And sometimes a dwarf will go up to the front door before realizing he's not allowed outside and go back in.

I'm not sure myself, but maybe the pebbles(of flying death +3) from adventure mode somehow ended up in that screen?

Yea it seems that the vermin cave spiders can walk through walls a certain distance from what spawns them.

Thats actually sometimes how I find hidden chasms and cave rivers.  Mine out some thin shafts under known mountain tiles, wait for awhile and search more throughly any areas where cave spider webs appear.

EDIT: As an aside thats pretty good at finding ore too.

If that one miner was the friendly type he may have been good friends with every single member of your fortress.

*at the funeral*
Dwarf1) We were best friends...
Everyone else) You sunnava elf! I was his best friend! No you weren't! What! (arguing)(blood)(death)

I'm a sword fanboy.  They kill both living and undead things with equal efficiency.  The only thing they can't kill reasonably well is big, high defense stuff.

But crossbows and bolts can handle those situations nicely.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How can I take something from my head?
« on: February 12, 2008, 11:37:00 pm »
You should be able to interact with it to pull it out if this happens again.  (I think its the "shift+I" key)  You can dislodge stuckin swords from undead this way too.

But make sure your in a safe place, because that is gunna HURT when you remove it, you might go unconscious.  Pretty good chance of bleeding to death when you remove it too.

I once had an arrow lodged in some vital bodypart, I think it was a throat but I don't recall precisely.  Anyway I removed it, passed out, and promptly bled to death.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fort taking forever to save
« on: February 12, 2008, 11:57:00 pm »
When I was trying to get the new entity modding right worlds with much more than the standard number of citizens took a horrible amount of time to save and load maps(windows even gave me a virtual memory exceeded message once...with 3 Gigabytes designated to it).  Maybe ya just got bad luck and a large number of the world's historical figures managed to live through worldgen and didn't die?

It may be updating every single one's ages and relevant info every time you save.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can Wrestlers Snap Necks?
« on: February 10, 2008, 05:06:00 pm »
Not presently no.

They can strangle (Neck damage, causes bleeding and keeps the opponent from breathing) and gouge eyes out(massive pain+bleeding) those both tend to signify the end of a fight is pretty close.

Breaking necks or bare hands dismemberment is one of the things that are likely to be implemented in the future though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: catching a giant eagle
« on: February 10, 2008, 10:57:00 am »
You might be able to rig up a tall wall or something and put a trap in the only way through.  But it still only makes it more likely for the eagle to end up on the trap tile.  It could still not go in the direction of the wall, or simply fly over it. That would also be a massive project.

Once you know how and can make a chokepoint between two large areas you can catch wildlife without too much trouble, but when the creature can move in the z level as well the difficulty is compounded by a hundred times.

Maybe you can lure an eagle into a cage trap in a cave with a sacrificial soaper?

EDIT: This is assuming that fliers trap immunity was removed when they could start moving on z.  Back in 2D I remember flier making stuff ignore traps.

Sweet, my goblins will begin to fear the room past the old mine shaft and the two conspicuous steel floodgates.
Then I'll give my "special" nobles front row seats to the show.

"Oops, fortifications don't block magma? Shame."

I have also encountered this, I put some goblins in wooden cages and a bed(bed had a particularly annoying mayor in it)  and then magma flooded the room.  I know cages protect from floods but I figured the magma would burn the cages and kill the goblins.

But when I flooded the room everything was still intact. (except the mayor fortunately but the bed survived.) I even flooded it again for an entire season, still no dice.  Both weather and temperature are on.

Maybe magma channels work differently than the flow? I dunno.

Edit:do I ever post without one of these? Cut is better than copy. Means I don't repeat myself by mistake.
