The blue keyll me now these puns are terrible :p

Anything being done to combat lolspinning in melee? By far my biggest annoyance in the game is after a nice line battle the melee charge commences and all of a sudden we have 40 Star Wars Kids flailing at eachother doing ridiculous damage.
WaltF4 did an experiment regarding pikes and spin thrusting, which is somewhat relevant.

Yup that is the stuff I was talking about, also the ground striking is fully operational in NW as well, I like to refer to it as bayonetdigging and it is every bit as silly as it sounds.

A sneaky Prussian charge into the back of our line. Bayonettes are sharp.

Bought it a few hours ago, it's quite fun so far. It's is quite a nice feeling when you happen upon an organized team working together. Hell sometimes even without that, I have seen actual firing lines and ordered charges happen on the fly as well.

Why would one have to lure it I mean it's  just a glorified swiss army knife.

Whoops meant 173, where the hell did I get 117 from.

also I will never play this ever ever ever nope nope nope

This infinity to the power of googolplex times over. Fuck me I would get a heart attack if I played it. I will get a friend to play it when it is finished so I can watch it under a blanket with a warm cup of cocoa.

backing up

You can always try GIT, I'm not a big fan of it myself since I find it too easy to screw projects up by a couple misstypes. Other than that there's for example Mercurial.

Hm. I'm thinking of getting into programming/coding but I have one question to ask: how much work do you think I should put in to get good at it?

I ask this because I am unfortunately afflicted with the oh-so-annoying trait of "drops something if it doesn't interest them in five seconds". Programming/Coding seems like it would take a LOT of time until you can actually make something interesting, and I don't want to drop it too soon.

Also, this probably isn't true at all, but I'm wondering if proficiency in natural languages helps when learning programming languages. I'm good when it comes to natural linguistics, but I wonder if that will transfer over to computer linguistics.

Being a good programmer takes quite a bit of practice, though it comes easier to some than to others as all things. I have just one tip for you, and it was a tip I needed to hear when I started out: Learning to become a programmer != learning a programming language. You are the artist and the language is but a tool.

I could probably write this in Verilog HDL in my sleep...I miss my FPGA...  Anyway, the reference manual for VHDL says that std_logic is defined as

Ahh finally got it to work, I realised I didn't need to use any case/ifs/when/while/whatever's at all to do it but could just write it as a basic logic expression.
Now the Adder/subber and the shifter is complete. Just the logic unit and this ALU will finally be complete.

Thanks, I'll try it out and report back :)

Hot-tubs/goblin-boilers.

So I have this idea that could have two possible uses. I was thinking of creating a small pool of water in my fort and creating a pipeline of magma o go under the floor.

Side view:

=~~~=
======
~~~~~
======
My thinking is that the magma would warm up the rock under the water which would in turn warm the water. Depending on how hot it gets it would either be a hot tub for my expedition leader or a torture device for captured goblins where I could boil them alive.
Now would it even work is the question I want to ask before I undertake it, because if it doesn't it would just ruin my forts symmetry in vain :p
Not exactly programming but closely enough related I would think.
Damn you VHDL, damn you to a magmapipe. Trying to construct a basic 32-bit ALU, part of which is a 16-bit barrelshifter, being forbidden from using 'process' I try to solve it using a basic sequence of 'with select when' using controlbits but for some reason it keeps screaming at me that "0" is not std_logic when I use it in the 'with select when'.
As in... (the part that is giving me errors is marked in red.)
entity barrelshifter is
 port (input: in std_logic_vector(31 downto 0);
        output: out std_logic_vector(31 downto 0);
        shift1, shift2, shift4, shift8, shift16: in std_logic);
end entity barrelshifter;
architecture behavioral of barrelshifter is
signal outputtemp: std_logic_vector(31 downto 0);
begin
with shift1 select
temp <= input when "0",
--shift           when "1";
with shift2 select
...
with shift4 select
etc.
--I left the actual shift out since it is a pretty lenghty piece, basically it uses the temporary vector to add an appropriate amount of 0's and then copies the previous vector to the remaining spaces.
Now this error probably is more the fault of me being a complete nubcake at VHDL but damn if I don't feel better if I blame the language ;)
If anyone has any pointer to what I should do to fix it I will dance a little jig and purr like a kitten.
