Of course if NATO would intervene we'd threaten with nukes right away. We are not stupid, you know.
Errr... the first half of this statement seems to disagree with the second.
Agreed. Threatening half the world with NUKES is not that smart.

Anyway, we can agree that Russia is massively outnumbered and outgunned by the combined forces of NATO. However, there is the problem of actually getting said forces on the theatre of operation, which is somewhat easier in the modern day, but still a logistical nightmare on the scale we're talking about.
It's all about local numerical superiority.

Play With Your Buddies / Re: Let's Play: Infinite Space
« on: March 29, 2014, 08:51:48 am »

We've got Warp Drives (Nia said as much), then we've got the MAGICAL! Inflaton reactionless drives and the mysterious/magical Void Gates which form the convenient Portal Network in both galaxies. I like the idea that the starlanes are charted, but that will stop making sense once our Navigator starts talking more frequently and you'll know why.

And actually, I'm pretty sure you ARE trackable and fully interactable in a starlane.

Then again, our whole talk centers around a single concept/question: do we imagine space (and everything combat-related to it) in traditional 2D abstractions, like how Sun Tzu did when he coded the Art of War or do we imagine it as a boundary-less 3D scenario like the one created by games like Homeworld and FreeSpace (and to a lesser extent, Sword of the Stars)?

2D and 3D ... for me, that's pretty much what it boils down to. You work within the freedom or limitations of the abstraction you choose and make up the rules for it as necessary (for example, that meteor storm back in the SMC? I could've gone "UP!" or "DOWN!" and bypassed it altogether instead of being stuck in that X-axis choice of either going back for deflectors or pushing through and taking HUGE damage.)

Mental note: MONSTER ENERGY DRINK. Don't drink more than 3 within the same hour. The world can't keep up the pace, and mouth and brain can't accompany either ... thoughts just race across the mental circuits. Neural network's gonna need refurbishing after crunch time. Too much thought, not enough recording.
I never said that.

GODDAMNIT GUYS, what did I say about deploying the cannons out of range of their archers?

The archers have their wooden cover made, yes? Move up with it. Two men behind each, lift it, move forward a bit, put it down, rinse, repeat.
One group will move up to Maxim then retreat with him.

Don't shoot on the gate while they're doing so, there is a ballista behind.

have a few more volleys of cannon fire and archer fire on the walls, then we'll see.

...you do realize its very loosely based off a historical event right? They really did all die at the end, and in Japanese culture that was indeed the right thing to do.
I know, I'm more WTF-ing about the culture rather than the film itself.

Just watched 47 ronins.
The movie itself is pretty meh, but is a suitably epic quest for honor and redemption, with treacherous villains, a witch/dragon to kill and a princess to save. All pretty standard.
Then at the end, the Shogun scold them for disobeying and says they should've been hanged like common bandits, but since they did what was right, they get a free get-out-of-jail card THE RIGHT TO F*CKING KILL THEMSELVES.

THE MOVIE END ON A COLLECTIVE SUICIDE OF ALL THE 47 HEROES

What the HELL japan?

Is there a time limit?

Regardless, engage with a healthy dose of cannon fire. Keep spread out and out of range, be wary of riposts. After a couple volleys, move archers forward with the palissades and fire at will.

I'd rather have a single cannon and more melee instead.

Anna - Tough, Determined, Team-player, Competitive great lieutenant material, if we manage to make her compete with the ennemy rather than with her own teammates.
Leon - Aggressive, Reckless, Focused Sounds rather good, but the reckless part needs to be watched.
Dmitri - Passive, Clever, Mild Coward Meh.
Warren - Sneaky, Unloyal, Cunning that stink backstab ten miles away.
Patrik - Warmonger, Tactical, Strong Second best IMO. I'd take him.
Megan - Caring, Passive, Clever Medic.
Harold - Aggressive, Warmonger, Unloyal Ugh. Second worst.
Titus - Tough, Strong, Mild Coward Odd combination of traits. Can be a good soldier, but has no officer traits.
Maxim - Sneaky, Competitive, Ambitious sneaky and ambitious are a dangerous duo...

Okay. Take Anna as second for now, with Patrik as another lieutenant.
Expose plan, take suggestions and ideas, but make it clear that our orders will suffer no discussion. That's not to say that they should stick to them when the situation goes to hell, stay clever.

I'd like that list, please.

Ideally we'll start with a recon mission, both in front (stay out of range) and behind the castle (if accessible). See if climbing the cliff is doable and if there is some access from there. Maybe with ladders or grappling hooks if we can get/make some.

Make some wooden shields for the archers to hide behind. Not a portable shield, a large bit of palissade with a hole to fire through without fearing retaliation. Cannon and battering ram should try and fashion themselves some cover against arrows with branches and shit.

The cannon will have for mission to provide suppressive fire once the assault begin (not now nor soon), as will archers from behind their palissades, two per palissade.

I'll take the 8 best marksmen as archers, six in the cannon, and the rest as melee, six of those manning the ram.

Do we know what the opposing team has?
How high is that cliff?
Is there any possible lieutenants in our group we might delegate squads to?
Is that one cannon needing six gunners?
Also, archers in power armor? What the hell?  ???

Branch: King's Men
Reason: Glory and renoun. And escaping a dull, eventless life. Also one of those:
