Say we're prostitutes. Show some leg. Seduce player characters.
-1

But then they have less reason to trust us. What good is an information-giving NPC who doesn't give information?
We're not supposed to have this information as a friendly NPC. Only an evil NPC would know about an ambush ahead of time. Or a freaking seer.

Dringish! Jnnlruslbele!
Shout this whist fleeing.
+1, we'll set up another ambush further ahead.

272
This is a very feeble excuse.

273
Icefire gets it, warning them is in NO WAY beneficial to us, and may do some serious harm.
"Helper NPC" usually don't have prescience or anything. As such, we wouldn't know about the brigands and they simply can't blame us for not knowing there was an ambush ahead.
While if we warned them, it would raise suspicion on HOW did we know. All the answers to that particular question pointing in one direction: we're NOT the helpful NPC helper we're pretending to be.

"fleet ahead, fleet behind. Guess we're screwed." no you moron, you still have left and right, not speaking of up and down! You're in freaking SPACE.

Do you recall that back in the Magellanic Stream, Yuri took a SECRET STARLANE ROUTE that delivered him right into that Lugovalian Flagship?

Replace SECRET STARLANE ROUTE with SECRET PATH THROUGH THE WOODS and it'll be the same.
That was hyperspace and I can get along with that since it seems like the setting's using Starlane FTL anyway.
But in the situation I was describing they're in conventional space...

We said we were the exposition/information-giving NPC!
We lied.
What, so we abandon the lie ASAP so you can suicidally attack a bunch of adventurers?
No, but we don't tell them about the kobolds we don't even know about either.

277
No telling them about the kobolds, that's stupid and how could we know anyway.
Yes to leaving the valuables hidden and attacking with the kobolds. Ambush them, have the shaman engage first with ice gnats while invisible, then the kobolds charge while the chaman stays behind and throw earth bolts.
The goblins should hide in the cart and cower.

Let's lead them to the lair of the biggest monster we know of. Claim it's a shortcut.

282
I'm lost. Could you tell me where nearby landmark is?
This + dangerous adventurers (justification for hiding), but I doubt "join me!" had any chance of success, so no to that.

283
Sneak into the merchant's cart while the four and the merchant are distracted with bargaining.
Good idea.

284
PTW, I will join the monsters.

The more I read this thread, the more I get the impression that there is a profound misunderstanding somewhere as how people relate to their governments.

- You know man, I killed some men. It's bad thing to do, but hey I am strong, so I am not going to face a consequences
- You know, I did kill some men too, man, sorry...
- THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!
- You know, you did this too..
- Sorry bro, but thats http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu_quoque, so shoo, you bad and you have victim complex
Right there. There is the problem. It's not what you're saying. It's more like:

-My boss killed people. I feel it was a bad thing, and I feel bad because he was my boss then.
-Well, my boss killed people and I'm OK with it because yours did it too.
-Hey, killing people is a bad thing, no matter who did it!
-But you did it too.
-Not me, my boss, and I'm not OK with it.
