The best use of unity after you've filled out all of your traditions is to ascend as many ecumenopoleis to the highest planetary ascension level you can.  I think around level 8 or 9 it totally eliminates the rare resource upkeep of the districts, and the energy upkeep I think.  That's still true as far as I know, despite one of the recent patches saying that stuff like that is supposed to cap at -90% upkeep cost.  It also has the side benefit of reducing empire size from the pops on those planets, which is a small benefit but nice as a bonus.

That requires that you set the planet's specialization as just "Ecumenopolis" I think, since otherwise it probably just boosts construction time for districts or whatever other useless benefits the other specializations give.

In my last few games I've gotten 2 up to level 10, but also usually don't have more than 2 or 3 ecumenopoleis since it's impossible to get them populated in the end game, especially when I'm trying to get pops on ring worlds for research.

This is one reason I hate playing democracies in Stellaris.

Then gain, you don't really lose anything by failing the mandates, so I end up just ignoring them after the early game.

According to the wiki, sadly they're a mundane but odd underground creature: https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Hungry_head

I actually can't remember ever seeing one, but it's been a very long time since I've dug down to the caverns.

Wow, it's been almost 11 years since I've posted in this thread.  I don't have anything direct to contribute except to say that I decided to keep working on my NaNoWriMo story from last year, which I completed last night after a marathon 5,400 words in a single day.  It came out to about 95,000 words across 29 chapters and a bit over 300 pages using the novel e-pub template I used.

When I started, I set out to write something I hoped would be publishable.  That was always a lofty goal considering that the subject material was inevitably not going to be broadly appealing.  It's a story about space explorers in an alternate, magical universe who discover that the solution to the Fermi paradox is that aliens keep wiping themselves out by discovering necromancy.  Except... it's also written from the perspective of a non-human species that are effectively space furries.  So, pretty narrow appeal.

Anyway, after writing it, I came to the normal conclusion that the story is just a very rough draft that needs a lot of plot and developmental work.  I effectively want to redo the last third of the book, maybe with the end result having no resemblance to what I wrote.  Editors understandably charge money to review a story of that length, and since I don't think it could be published anyway there's no point in doing that.

Still, it's good to finish something I started for NaNoWriMo.

Yeah, you can get SSL certificates for free these days even, so money can't be the problem.

Being unable to craft high boots happens sometimes, and has been a thing since at least .31.25.  It's not a bug, or wasn't then, and was a result of some clothing being random between civilizations.  Most dwarf civilizations can make high boots, but there's a small random chance they can't.

I don't think there's anything like that for crossbows, so that's a bit more puzzling.

A $1 million fine to Trump is meaningless.  I guess it sets some precedent that he was punished in some way, but it's not going to really mean anything.

Regarding Wyoming and electric cars: I was wondering why they'd something so utterly stupid, but if the state relies on fossil fuel production for a significant portion of its industry there is at least some logic to it other than "electric cars = liberal and thus evil".  It's still utterly stupid, and in particular I'm baffled that they essentially are saying, "We don't have electric car recharging infrastructure here so we're not going to just say you're on your own but instead say you just can't buy an electric car here."  Party of small government, right there.

As someone who had no problems learning and playing the old ASCII version for years, I honestly really like the graphics and prefer it this way.  It makes modding in new creatures a lot more work, but also more rewarding.

Using the mouse to designate and select things is also just very nice, and using it to designate constructions is nice since there's no longer a 10-tile limit.  I hope I'm not misremembering that being a thing.

Meeting area and room designation with zones instead of from furniture, with freeform painting, is also a great improvement.  Same with stockpiles.

There are definitely some usability catches with the new UI, like how it isn't always focusing text boxes like I expect and lacks mouseover indicators for buttons, but as a whole it makes the game much better in my opinion.

The newest dev diary announced stealth mechanics coming up in the next major patch / story pack.  I'm honestly shocked that they're adding something like that into the game this late, since it seems like something that will require a lot of adjustment of core combat mechanics, like how the AI perceives fleets.

I'm curious how they're going to integrate it with other systems, but it seems like it might finally make espionage important if you need intel to know where cloaked fleets are.  I suspect that will matter in some way, but more than likely there will just be special starbase modules or techs that allow detecting cloaked ships.

Maybe we'll get cloaking modules that have to compete with other aux slots on ships now, which would be good for variety since there isn't much in the way of choice now.  Maybe specialized cloaking sensor modules too.

I've still been reading the Dresden Files series and have gotten up to the last two published books.  Urban fantasy still isn't exactly my thing, though I've enjoyed the series overall.

Now that I'm getting close to finishing it, I need to find something else to start reading, but don't know where to start really.  For a while I've been wanting to find a fantasy book that's sort of xenofiction in that it's not written from a human perspective, and ideally is something like an alternate earth where humans don't even exist.  I did a bit of poking around looking for books written from, say, the perspective of dragons, but I only found a couple of examples and they weren't quite what I was looking for for reasons I don't really remember now.  Seems like most books about dragons written in the last 20 years are just dragon rider books.

I also kind of want to find something that's less grand in scale than the Dresden Files.  Seems most stories that go on long enough inevitably become about saving the world or universe, but I'd like to see something a bit more personal in scope.

It's a shame because overall I found Scarlet to be very fun and generally a huge improvement over Sword and Shield.  Of course, just not having characters named Swordward and Shielbert come out of nowhere at the 11th hour would have been a huge improvement.  To say nothing of the plot being largely incomprehensible anyway, and while the games were at least not buggy, they felt bare and incomplete.

The bugs in Scarlet and Violet's single player are usually just distracting, like when a shadow pops in or out, but the crashes are kind of unforgivable.  This is the only Switch game I've ever had crash, and it's done it several times.

I don't get why the game has so, so many graphical bugs when multiplayer is involved though.  I haven't tried it myself, but after watching some streams it's pretty apparent that the game just does not know how to synchronize something between clients.  I can't even guess what's going wrong with the things like arms bending backward.  Normally for something like this, you'd have a player character animation system driven by state data that just blends animations together, and since it never seems to break in single player I have to assume it's got something to do with trying to replicate individual bone data instead of just state data and losing some of it.  Or maybe it's trying to drive animation data locally and trying to replicate it from the other client and conflicting... I don't know.  It must be some insane design under the hood that is probably very hard to fix.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Are Taverns worthwhile?
« on: January 17, 2023, 09:50:02 am »
In other words, if you only care about the socialising and happiness, designate a wide empty room as citizen-only tavern.  I like to make "back-streets" where people chatter and dance for fun.

This is an interesting idea, and I'm going to have to try this in my current fort.

On a different note, since I haven't played very much since taverns were added to the game, is there any sensible way to combine communal dining rooms with taverns?  I assume they need to be separately designated meeting areas for room value reasons, and that citizens don't eat in taverns so you do still need a dining room to avoid unhappy thoughts.

A small but vocal group would volunteer to get sent to Deep Space Urist to "help" with the elven occupation, probably.

I don't have a link handy since I don't remember where, but I'm pretty sure I read where someone tried making tiles of different sizes and it didn't work.  I think creatures do somewhat work, but map tiles didn't.  Something like that.  If you try it, let us know for sure what the results are.
