DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stop a tantrum spiral?
« on: October 10, 2011, 11:32:56 am »
How exactly would this help? The only way toys can give happy thoughts is if a dwarf buys one ("He made a satisfying acquisition lately."), and that doesn't happen unless the Economy is active (which doesn't happen anymore in version 0.31.xx).

Incidentally, can anything else cause this thought?  I had a dwarf with this thought recently and I was under the same impression that it wasn't possible in the current version.

Quote
Well I had a dwarven baby that was miserable after a parent died and after making some toys he was happy.  I know the economy isn't working, but I fiigured that helped.  So the smooth stones doesn't work in workshops huh?  It seems to work in the dining hall as reports say the dining hall is magnificient or something to that effect.  I know about assigning dwarves rooms but it takes time to excavate and that's in process, which is why I smoothed the dorm while I'm creating rooms and assigning the angriest dwarves (and nobles) rooms first.

Smoothing and engraving the dining hall would definitely increase its value, since you're designating it as a room from one of the tables.  Workshops are different in that you don't designate a room for them and thus the smooth walls don't get factored into the value of any room.  Now, I'm fairly sure that engraving such a wall will still give a happy thought if a dwarf happens to wander by, it's just less likely to happen than in say the dining hall.

I'll also second that decent personal quarters and a nice dining hall are pretty much all you need to keep the dwarves happy.  Each of my dwarves has a 2x3 smoothed bedroom with a bed, chest and cabinet.  I believe the tutorial I followed to get into this habit was written while the economy was still active and such containers actually made a difference, but it seems to keep them happy.  Constructing 3 pieces of furniture, a door and digging out a room for each migrant doesn't take all that much time really.

The dining hall is filled with enough tables and chairs that I don't see any bad thoughts about crowding or lack of chairs, and I smooth the entire room.  I engrave all of the walls except one, which I reserve for future expansion of the dining hall (mining through a master work engraving will tick off whoever engraved it).  When I get a chance, I throw in some statues to increase the value of the room some more.

Interestingly, my dwarves don't seem to make many friends, even though many of them do hang out in the dining hall.  I suspect the large size of the dining hall keeps them from socializing too much.  Thus even though 99% of my dwarves stay at ecstatic, even if a few started tantruming it would likely be contained with little effort.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Names you assign to noteworthy dwarves?
« on: October 07, 2011, 03:11:37 pm »
I didn't name any of my dwarves initially because it felt like it was too much work.  I read a suggestion somewhere to use nicknames as a quick way of telling if you've set up a dwarf's labors already, so I started doing that in this fort.

Of course, my current fort is running the My Little Pony mod, so they have appropriate names.  My favorites so far are Sugar Britches (the chief medical pony) and probably Thunder Thighs (expedition leader / manager, she was fat so that's the name she gets).

I name all of my military after weapons and armor though, to make them sound intimidating.  Things like Plastron, Cuirass, Falchion, stuff like that.  Then they get stabbed in the head and suffocate, so I guess the names aren't really helping. :(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: capybaras are scary
« on: October 07, 2011, 03:07:19 pm »
Guess the capybara got a critical hit.  Kind of like the story I read of some adventurer getting bitten in half by an elf child.  Or the dwarf biting off a bronze colossus' leg.

I'm a bit more scared to let my dwarves hunt now though.  They've been bringing in the capybara meat for years now (without a single injury I'm aware of).  Guess I'm just a few lucky hits away from dead dwarves and a tantrum spiral.

DF General Discussion / Re: Huge Sieges
« on: October 07, 2011, 01:12:35 pm »
Tell me about it, my latest fortress was doing great despite me not bothering with propper management. It even defeated the first siege with relative ease.
Then the second siege came along.
To many goblins to count, many of them were riding cave crocodiles and freaking jabberers. Not to mention the blizzard men that came to rape the civilians in the arse whilst the military tried to fight the overwhelming goblin force.
I reclaimed and I'm still churning out coffins for the fallen. Upon inspecting the mess left behind and the now friendly goblins and beasties I found some ghastly war trophies, one I remember seeing was a dwarf nail bracelet owned by a crocodile.
At least it gave the fortress some character, it needed some given the serene embark. First artifacts to be made was a coffin, followed by some items depicting the brutal slaughter that was.

I had a similar (thankfully more survivable though) incident with my second siege in this fort.  Mind you, I've only ever endured 3 in my entire playing experience, so I'm still new to it.  The first siege I received in this fort (and the only in my previous and abandoned fort) were fairly small and repelled easily.  I lost no dwarves on one occasion and lost a single one to a broken spine in the other.

The second siege I received in this fort though was a wake up call.  I'd been intentionally letting things run freely to spice it up a bit (such as breaching the caverns and twiddling my thumbs waiting for something Fun to happen), but I didn't expect the goblins to be so nasty suddenly.  I'd heard that goblin archers could be monsters, and a squad of them showed up riding camels and jaguars.  I lost about half of my militia to that fight, either immediately in combat or due to infection / bleeding out in the hospital.

Lesson learned: finish the wall, carve out some fortifications, get more marksdwarves and make sure they're all fully armored.  So many broken legs because no one had any leg armor...

Oh, and make sure your doctor isn't busy hauling stone around when he should be y'know, sewing up Urist McBloodFountainTheGushing.  And have soap.

holy crap...

did you carve/cast that yourself?

My guess is that it's a model from Warhammer Fantasy Battles, but it's masterfully painted, nonetheless.  My Warhammer 40K minis are disgusting to look at. :)

Having a hard time thinking of one that I would feel comfortable living in, really.

Most of the cartoons I watch are funny or interesting, but would be difficult for me to live in comfortably.  Adventure Time, or Regular Show for example.  And while My Little Pony is fun to watch, I want to keep my hands, thank you.  It would be difficult to type with hooves, and I live on computers.

Warhammer 40K is definitely the first thing I thought of when I was wondering where I wouldn't want to be.  It's pretty much the definition of the universe.

Now, I wouldn't mind visiting some of these universes for a little while, but I wouldn't want to stay.  It might be cool to stroll through the streets of a world like Macragge from WH40K for a little while, but even taking a tour of an Imperial star ship would probably be riskier than I'd be willing to put up with.  Being in the Sonic universe for a little while might be cool too, but only for a little while.

DF General Discussion / Re: Duplicate names?
« on: October 05, 2011, 09:06:19 pm »
Not personally, but I'm pretty sure either Boatmurdered or Battlefailed had numerous goblins with the same names in one of their sieges.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were half a dozen Urists in a fort.

Mod Releases / Re: Pony Mod: My Little Fortress

Nidokoenig, you really need to make a chart explaining everything, i.e. the armor types the other civs etc.

Agreed.  I was able to figure out the armor more or less with the help of Wikipedia, but some of the others things are just trial and error at this point.  The new types of food for example are a mystery to me, and so far instead of taking the time to read through the RAWs I just keep using dwarven food.  I gather that there are trees you can pasture to shear for apples or something, but that's as far as I've investigated that so far.

General Discussion / Re: Your nerdy bragging rights
« on: October 05, 2011, 08:59:06 pm »
Ahahahaha. I was raised in the deep country. Nothing nerdy there.
Your nerdfu must be cultivated yourself.

I was raised in the deep country myself, but my dad happened to be proficient at cobbling together fascinating machines out of scrap and elbow grease.  He made some of the most amazing stuff out of junk and I guess it inspired me as a kid.  I originally wanted to be a mechanic or something like that because I watched him fix and build things, but then computers caught my eye.  It's all history from there.

A good example of the sort of stuff he'd make was a ring roller / cutter.  When he found out that I was interested in making chain mail and showed him how it was done / how tedious it was, he took some scrap metal, an old motor, and a some metal machining tools and made a contraption that would wind and cut wire into rings, ready for use.  Awesome.  I couldn't help but grow up liking to tinker.  That and he led me into other interests like roleplaying in that he used to take part in civil war reenactments.  Perhaps a bit more mainstream, but it's the same thing under the hood.

General Discussion / Re: Steve Jobs is dead
« on: October 05, 2011, 08:52:05 pm »
Grim. I personally despise Apple products and their marketing with a passion, but Steve himself was a cool guy, who knew how to get his audience interested.

Also, my friend posted a link to a news article about it, and the thumbnail was the Microsoft logo. I don't know whether to laugh or sigh.

Agreed.  I hate Apple's vendor lock in strategies and extreme prices, but they do make good products and Steve Jobs absolutely knew what he was doing to turn Apple around from the brink like he did.  Respect where it's due.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: No sieges?
« on: October 05, 2011, 04:49:28 pm »
Can't say for sure, but in the two forts I've run so far, I never got any sieges until year 4, so maybe they just haven't showed up yet.  Are there any goblin civilizations on your civs menu?  Maybe they're extinct (I assume this is possible like other civs).

Dear Urist McBrewer,

What are you doing down in the caverns stealing stuff from the locals and getting bitten in the eye and kicked in the guts?  You're supposed to be in the fort brewing!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Destined for DF
« on: October 05, 2011, 12:20:31 pm »
Interestingly, my feelings and reactions to this seem to vary considerably.

In other games, sometimes I like to torture the player character.  In Mario 64 for example, I would spend hours finding the highest places I could launch Mario from to see what would happen when he impacted on the ground.  In Mario Sunshine, there wasn't much that was funnier than stepping in lava.  In Ocarina of Time, I'd do similar things to Link because his screams were just so dang epic.

I don't like to harm innocents in these games though, even if it's all for fun.  I can barely make myself do something like shoot an innocent bystander in Deus Ex, or even attack (non hostile) wildlife in a game like Everquest.  It just doesn't sit right with me, even if the results can be a bit funny and I'm planning on savescumming after the fact.

Dwarf Fortress is strange in this respect.  I found it hilarious when my armor smith had a failed mood, snapped and bit the feet off of a nearby wolf pup before a peasant walked by and kicked her skull in.  On the other hand, when I lost a single soldier in a siege, I actually felt bad.  Like I let my people down.  Like there was something I could have done to prevent her from getting a sword jabbed through her head, causing her to suffocate.

In general I play Dwarf Fortress with the intention of doing everything I can for my dwarves.  They all get their own bedrooms, have a nice decor, are protected from the foul goblins, and so on.  Only when they have failed moods do they get unhappy and cause trouble.  And I find that funny, whereas a dwarf getting killed in combat is a tragedy.  I wonder why that is...

It doesn't help that I'm planning on setting up my first magma pump stack soon.  And if half of my fortress melts from !!fun!!, well, that is probably going to be funny.  Odd, that.

Facebook and Twitter have been making me rage for the past few days.

I've been tasked with integrating Facebook liking and Twitter tweeting into the mobile app for our partnered newspaper company.  I don't think the two companies could have made this any harder.  We want the interface to be consistent, naturally, and would prefer if users didn't have a window pop up over the app to do these actions.  Tough luck, because both Twitter and Facebook require you to redirect to them to let the user log in (which makes sense, keeps us from stealing their passwords, not that we would :)).

Fine, I say, I'll just open a popup.  Oops, mobile browsers can't do that inside of a native code app!  FINE, I say, I'll iframe in the log in form.  Nope, you can't do that either because of security restrictions!

So I ended up freaking reverse engineering Facebook's like button requests and reimplementing it in cURL in PHP, which amazingly works.  Except it's against their terms of service, so we might get banned.

Couldn't get Twitter to work like that at all, so I ended up finding a workaround for the popup thing for them, but it doesn't work for Facebook!

Ffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu.....
