Life Advice / Re: Browser Hijacking... or, Search hijacking.
« on: June 25, 2012, 06:23:07 pm »
Yea, those are definitely solutions to me, but not to an 80 year old guy who puts a picture of a girl working out in a certain position in his carefully arranged "My Documents" folder so that he knows where his most important files are.  Any kind of sorting of this folder is an absolute catastrophe for him, and so it would be more trouble than its worth to clean it out and start over.  Basically totally pc illiterate, and approaches it so methodically that i would have to do more than reinstall, i would have to recreate his entire environment down to even icon positions.

This is a continuing problem i'm noticing in people who have gotten malware, and im just wondering how it works and if there is a way to fix it without a cpu genocide.  Reinstalling Firefox is easy, but Reinstalling IE is pointless and kinda never really solves these kinds of problems, probably because you can go up and down versions but not really get rid of it.

Life Advice / Browser Hijacking... or, Search hijacking.
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:45:00 pm »
I got a guy who calls me to his house from time to time and fix his computer.  I have seen this before and ive tried to fix it with every tool I know to use but i can seem to figure it out.  Maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

What happens is if you do a search up in the top right hand corner, say in bing or google, your search results get "hijacked".  Lets say if you search for ms security essentials, you are taken to a search results page that looks like you ar being sent to microsoft but when you click on the link, you are taken to one of many different "shady" virus/malware scanners that do noting but report taht you have a virus and wont let you use your computer until you pay them(malware/extortionware)

Even after you clean the computer with mwb, or msse, you still get that hijacking of the search results.  What is this hijacking called, and how is it fixed?  If im using hijackthis is it something i can see?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Anyone play "pure" DF?

I made a mod that let me play as all races with nobles, but other than that, I have always played vanilla.  I didn't like the way graphical sets couldn't distinguish between periods and dirt.  Also I play on linux.

The trader was probably the one that was to do the trading.  There was an ambush right during the unloading part of a caravan for mine, and after that ?trader died? they never did open for trade, and shortly after packed up and left.

DF Suggestions / Re: Bees weaponized!

I  just thought of this today!  a bee bomb, or throw-able bea hives would create a storm of angry bees that would create a lot of X has been sung by a bee! spam, and send everyone in the vicinity, friend or foe running

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Baby boom, can't cloth them all!

elves carry lots of textile things.  get all the leather and cloth you can buy from their bins.  I think "Looms" are automatic, if there is something to be "loomed", just make sure you have a weaver.  Yea mostly i just buy my cloth/leather.  buchering helps with leather production, you can also have rabits and cats breed (like rabbits and cats do) and get leather for clothes...

The worlds largest elven zoo zoo of elven females.
Change your goblin tags to civ_playable  start in a forest close to elves.  Without mods you will have issues with military, but thats not the point, you NEED cage traps LOTS of them.  After a few merchants leave unhappy prepare to be ambushed.  Fill your towers with lots and lots of elves.

Started a fortress in a "serene" area because I was tired of starving in a "Terrifying glacier", and butchering wolves to survive.  It was to be the ultimate fortress.  A boring, megaproject... 30 seconds after unpausing game the fisher-dwarves were eaten by river crocs.  The 2 man militia lost limbs before dying, and pretty much after that it ended badly.

On topic, the only thing that might make me worry is if burrowing enemies could drill through walls, rendering all defense null.

HOWEVER!!!  It would be an improvement if besiegers brought catapults/balista's that could blast through walls. A defense would be either having your own, or "reinforcing" your walls with double walls, one layer being wood/metal.

I think the only thing that would stop me from playing would be if they went windows only .NET, required some garbage like gfwl signin, any kind of drm, or if the linux vesrion stopped being supported or upgraded to an incompatible GLIBC. (or sold themselves to EA haha)

Your answers are truly distressing.  So it would not be of any benefit to start in the age of myth?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A question about history
« on: May 25, 2012, 01:45:56 pm »
Does world history occur while you are playing in fortress mode?  Obviously you would have to have a really long surviving fortress.  but what im trying to say is do things happen in the outside world other than the gobs/hums/elves warring/trading with you, and the megabeasts/vamps/weres's attacking you.

A previous character ate a lot of parts of a badger sow, yet was still hungry.  they kept eating until full, but still hungry?  I don't want to promote ascii bulimia  but it would have been nice to hurl, and eat something with more nutritional value?

My peasant found 2 chests full of gold coins and no one around watching.  After pilfering them  he/she found some type of castle or fort, ended up underneath and was killed by a kobold swordsman out of nowhere... byebye gold?

DF Suggestions / Feeding Troughs for animals, and the insane.
« on: May 22, 2012, 12:39:06 pm »
A dwarven civilization, even if overflowing with food, must still move its animals from pasture to pasture like nomads.  A more permanent solution would be the "Feeding trough"

The feeding trough is a rectangular lidless box created by carpenters.  They are placed in pastures and stocked with the appropriate food by animal caretakers.  Animals will congregate around the trough and not starve.  This will allow for a more permanent pen/pasture, even in an all stone area.  Almost all grazing animals may use the trough.  In times of GREAT desperation, Dwarves may eat from the trough, but get a bad thought  "was humiliated by being forced to eat like an animal lately"

Generally the more feeding troughs the better, as few will cause fights between animals.

It may be a little, too much to ask for but insane dwarves also can eat from the trough...
