DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Do you think danger rooms are a exploit?
« on: August 09, 2011, 09:48:39 am »
Rather than try adressing everyone individually i'll deal with things more generally.

1. If you don't have any skilled dwarves and no training ability it takes a LOT more than 6 months to get the majority anywhere near level 5 in a skill. I can tell you that from experiance.

2. Marksdwarves in a tower without a good few levels in their marksdwarf skill are sinmply usless, there's countless posts backing tis up about how they can't hit the broadside of a barn, and my own second seige had ranged mobs. Traps likewise have mobs that are good at avoiding them or are outright imunne.

3. Unless you go into the ini files you will see a seige long before you can get a good military able to handle them trained. No embark is gong to give you 10 yeas before a major seige, even if you limit your wealth aqussition and otherwise keep things down to keep them away. A good military a few years in at the latest is important to future survival.

The only way to get a usable military within the time frame allowed by even the most peacful embarks is to bring a trained military dwarf with you to kick start things. Don't do that and your gong to have to get VERY creative to keep them out, and you can forget breaching HFS before FPS death sets in, (unless you have an insane machine able to run decades old forts).

A month isn't really a necro IMHO. As to the question.

Easy. Their my primary trade export, i grow more than 1K excess every 6 months ATM, and it's going up :). Seriouslly, is one of the best way of earning easy trade money. You just have to keep making rock pots for them :p.

AFAIK It's more like they'll ask for one of 2 types of metal. Eithier shiny metal, which means stuff like gold, silve, or platinum, (and similar), or just metal, in which case they want non-shiny metal. I've never observed a dwarf refuse a metal, except on those criteria.

Currently there is a misconception that "training is too slow" and I wonder how much of that has to do with the fact that the default embark has no military dwarves.

Absolutly nothing. The game should not be focing you to:

1. Bring a military dwarf along at embark.

2. Not lose him till you get some good trained dwarves up

3. Start a military somwhere in the first 6 months to avoid him rusting.

Getting a decent military up without danger rooms and without a good military dorf to start the ball rolling is proving to be a REAL headachefor me ATM. And it's shouldn't be this hard. yes it shoudl take longer, but where allready on the verge of 2 years training an no one has better than level 5 in any skil. And thats a marksdwarf who started with a couple of levels. Most don't even have 1 skill level.

Alminium Alloy is a good material. Pure Aluminium is pure junk, (titaniums the same way. Iron is pretty unushual by those standards in that it's still not too bad, even if steel is better), so it makes sense it's not too good. Now if we could make aluminium alloys it would be a diffrent matter.

Also strength does not allways equal armour properties. Depending on how the attack works density, Hardness, or ductility can all be far more important. Strength has it's uses and it's lace. But it's not the be all and end all.

Yep. But you get cancellation spam which destroys your FPS, (i've seen upto an 80% drop off).

Well this has been going on for about 3 full months so far. Is it normal for it to take that long to die down?

I'll double check the equipment next time i log in mind, but still annoyying as every damm message like this adds to FPS slowdown, i'm allready hovering around 27 and falling.

Just had an ambush come through. Had a small seige before, but as soon as the leader of that one dodged off my bridge into the pit they ran off. This was larger than the seige and they stuck around a good bit more. Got rid of 5 of them, but the crossbows shot down one of my guys. Might also have a couple of injured animals but i saved and shut down before checking. Year 4, possibbly 5 and my first real goblin Christmas. Now if only my military where upto speed:(.

That assume you can get people with good training though. unless you go for a military embark you'd have to be very lucky. Level 4 training is the best i've got out of over 120 immigrants. It's taking an age for anyone to level ATM.

That said, as others say, the issue with danger rooms is more that they train excessivlly high excesivlly fast. if you could designate a lever and some upright spikes as a training area that helps speed up dodge, sheild and armour training somewhat, well that would be ok. Since your still talking a multi-season train with plenty of work involved.

I've defintly got plenty of everything i need so i can't see why that would be an issue...

EDIT: Unles it's possibble fr them to continue seeing insufficent after i've made sufficent avalibile perhaps? Can that happen?

That only works if it's all on one level and that level dosen't contain your fort. otheriwse you have to forbid across a half a dozen Z levels, working around your fort to make themn ot go out there, but still sue stuff inside your fort, then reverse it once they're gone. it's a real PITA. Just having burrow asigned dwarves never look outside their burrow for a job would work.

Hmm having military issues again. My marksdwarves, and i think some of my spear dwarves are all spamming equipment mismatch errors. The descriptions a bit vuage though so what could be wrong exactly?
