DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread

Ok littile military question for you. Just got a bunch of new imigrants and decided to recruit them into a spear dwarves squad. i created a littile custom uniform with just training spears in it. The squad list even says 6/10 speardwarves. I've assigned them an armour stand, (my first artifact no less), and they're sparring. But they're doing so with their bare hands, (yes i have training spears in stock and they aren't forbbiden). So why is this happening, any idea's. Also how many hands do spears need, can i send my dorfs in dual weilding them for extra pokey goodness?

Check the workshop profile. maybe you set it to only use dwarfs of sufficently high skill. As such till some train on the new workshop they do nothing.

I've looked at both the wiki and that thread and none of them make any sense whatsoever to me. Then again i've never touched pumps which probably dosen't help.

Blocks can't be used in any form of item crafting (apart from strange moods), so no, I would not recommend turning all your stone and wood to blocks. You can't get their original form back if you do.

WHAT!!!

Then why the hell did nobody correct that guy in the "too much stone" thread we had recently that told somone to convert it all to blocks. Okay, true you can probably convert a lot of it to blocks, but still...

Just a quick check, can you use wooden blocks in the place of logs in all woodcrafting in the same way as you would stone blocks, or is there some things you  need logs for. In fact is there any reason not to turn all of your wood and stone into blocks for easy storage?

The problem with the military screen isn't that it's impossiblle to use, even i'm mostly there on that, it's that it's increadbly hard to learn. It's not intuative, you end up, (in many cases), having to jump through hoops to get a basic squad setup. There's no need for it to be that complex that it's hard to learn. he real issue is that many of the screens squash several functions together on you.

EDIT: Yes learning how do do most things takes a bit of doing, but it is ultimatly intuative. The military screen isn't. With most things, once you get the basics of zone designating down and know which screen to look under it follows a fairly standard formulae. The military screen needs a seperate handbook for every page, and then some.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Archery training, How to?

I have to say that setting my marksdwarfs up with only training bolts, using just the one material type fixed all my issues with training.

It really is good advice.
