DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Trying to start my first fortess.
« on: December 30, 2008, 08:52:14 pm »
Food will start going bad under the burning light of the sun.
Lies! Food will start going bad when exposed, in neither a stockpile or a barrel.
Leave food in stagnant water in a hot jungle and it'll stay perfectly fresh for years, so long as you keep the tile it's own designated as a food stockpile for that type of food. Possibly just a food stockpile. Possibly just a stockpile.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Some raw dicrepancies.

@Peewee: If they're really just animated suits of armor, "why are they so deadly?"

Pretty sure all those problems are fixed in d6, razordw.
Joy! That's exactly what was happening to me.
@ Savok
Try setting your fps cap to 10x your refresh rate and your gfps cap to your refresh rate x2 like i did. Don't forget that you DO have 80 local map tiles.
Tried it. Best result of any setting, giving me ~33fps. I still have the problems described in this post, however.

Yes, I know that I have 80 tiles AND 64 z-levels, but the map was running at a staggering 125fps before the bug kicked in. Seriously, wut? I used to be lucky to get that on a map literally 10 times smaller and with a whole bunch less special stuff.

Do you have any idea what's causing this? I'd really like to be able to play DF.

warning: make walls to prevent flooding

I voted for "slower than 40d, problems."
My monitor is running at 60Hz.
All tests are done with an 8x10 region genned in 40d with a bunch of features.
Partial print off. Turning partial print:2 on causes wacky flickering.

40d, 9999fps, 20gfps:
thousands of menu fps, paused fps=~160. Normal.
20 paused gfps, due to the limit
~25fps due to major jerkiness, as described in this post.
~1gfps, which is the major jerkiness

40d5, 9999fps, 20gfps:
~1600 paused fps
~1 paused gfps, wacky.
~5fps due to major jerkiness, as described in that post.
~0.3gfps, which is the major jerkiness

40d5, 200fps, 30gfps:
166 paused fps
30 paused gfps
~20fps due to major jerkiness, as described in that post.
~1.5gfps, which is the major jerkiness

40d5, 100fps, 60gfps:
82.5 paused fps
60 paused gfps
~30fps due to major jerkiness, as described in that post.
~2gfps, which is the major jerkiness

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarven weight
« on: December 30, 2008, 01:05:02 pm »
It works well enough. General Discussion would be good too.

The answer is, "nobody knows, and it isn't possible to know, since weights and volumes and such aren't entirely canonical yet."

However, we do know how much weight a dwarf can carry unencumbered. See
this table, which I calculated soon after 3D came out.

DF Bug Reports / Re: periodic lockups

I'm having something similar - the game is locking up for a half second every second or so. See this thread: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=29164.0

DF Bug Reports / [40d to 40d5] FPS-ruining jerkiness
« on: December 29, 2008, 10:36:34 pm »
After about an in-game month of playing the last few games I've played, all in 40d, everything frequently pauses for a moment, reducing effective fps from 125 to 25.

After I think about it, this might've occured after I updated my drivers for my Nvidia GeForce FX 5200. It also appears to affect worlds genned in 40d exclusively.

Windows XP.

EDIT: This is also happening really bad in 40d5 with a world genned in 40d.

EDIT2: According to another guy, setting fps at 10x monitor refresh rate and gfps at 2x monitor refresh rate helps some.

EDIT2: Also, according to Baughn, this is fixed in 40d6. Which isn't out at the time of writing this.

ooh, I like that. Please, people, keep up the tradition!

Also, could there be some effort made at clearing away loose stone?

DF Suggestions / Re: Stopping the Tantrum Spiral - Angry/Sad dwarves
« on: December 29, 2008, 12:23:59 am »
I agree with your ideas, although I would quibble on a few details of the implementation.

My viewpoint on this topic is that Toady's gonna get to it when Toady's gonna get to it, and we, the forum (which is affected by the wiki), don't have any say in the small stuff.

DF Suggestions / Re: Filtered Announcements
« on: December 29, 2008, 12:20:55 am »
seconded. What I would like as the main announcement filter is a page allowing me to set whether or not I see x type of announcement when I'm seeing myfav level of announcements, which would be another level I've added in addition to the default four. I could see when dwarves cancel jobs due to sleep but avoid seeing season announcements.

...oh god. I've got an 8x11 embark region with ~64 z-levels, a pit, a cave, a magma pool, HFS, (35 visible creatures), a brook, and a terrific waterfall, but temp and weather off. I'm getting 180fps. I'm getting one hundred and eighty frames per second.

Given that I used to get that on a ~35 z-level 4x4 embark region with nothing but magma, a small brook, sand, and more sand, that's pretty fricking awesome.

Nice metal cheatsheet there.

Wait, somethings doesn't look right about those images... oh god, you're using JPEGs! Please, for the sake of all good and dwarven, use .pngs! DF even has OptiPNG, a superb bmp-to-png compressor.
