Life Advice / Should I Stay or Should I Go?
« on: June 27, 2014, 11:39:33 pm »
First thing, this is not a question about leaving the forums.
Second thing, this is a minor concern, nothing life changing. I'm not pretending that it's that urgent.
Now, with that out of the way...

My mother is stupid-level involved in Boy Scouts through my younger brother. She has spent several months organizing a week-long canoe trip in the Boundary Waters for the scout troop. She and said brother are going because scouts, and wherever she goes my father also goes (also, because they need another adult to supervise the littluns). I, however, am not going, and do not want to go. I don't like camping, bugs, or the kids in my brother's scout troop. This is where I have to make a choice.

The default is for me to stay at home by myself for a week. The first response anyone who knows my age will give would probably be "Sealy, you're 17 years old! You're mature enough to take care of yourself for a week." And indeed I am, for a certain definition of "take care of myself". However, due to the state of Michigan's (and, by now, most places') wacko licensing laws for minors, and my parents' relentless protectionism, I don't have a drivers' license, and with the spread-outness of the local area I would be effectively separated from anything but houses for the whole week. And being stuck at home alone for a week would be a psychological nightmare, and probably result in me not making particularly healthy diet and lifestyle choices for that duration.

The alternative is for me to go to Bwahston and stay with my aunt and her family. The family as a whole is very friendly, we enjoyed the last time we visited them, and she actually offered preemptively to let me stay there for the week. Of the three cousins in that branch of the family, only one of them is actually living at home now, so they're used to full houses in the past, and he's a cool guy too. But I'm not sure about the idea. On one hand, I'd like to be able to both go somewhere more interesting than the Christian Republic of West Michigan, and to visit family that I don't see that much. On the other, I'm still a little bit uncertain about how well the family dynamics will actually play out over the course of the week, of travelling to Boston on my own, and, I guess, that I'll end up not doing much more there than I would at home, even with the egging on from relatives.

What say you, Bay12? To go to Boston and face uncertainty, or stay at home and face being a lazy bum?

Life Advice / On Parents and College, or De Parentibus et Collegia
« on: May 04, 2014, 01:45:29 pm »
I've noticed a lot of concerned college finance threads of late. Here's my contribution to the growing pile. Apologies and probably a prompt lock are in order if I turn out to be incredibly wrong and naïve and sound exactly like the spoiled rich white kid I am.

How much is generally considered the proper proportion of college expenses for parents to pay? I ask this because I would like to know if I am being shortchanged under the guise of "independence". There are a number of facts which I will present as karma plaintiff, without giving my parents an opportunity to present the defense argument.

1. Argumentum ad comparationem: The university in question is the local flagship state school, probably a standard deviation above average cost for public universities but well below a private one. This is interesting because I have several classmates who are going to the same school with more generous parents, and some going to the aforementioned expensive private schools with similar levels of support. I'm not normally one to use peers as a measuring stick, but this has instilled in me a mix of confusion and jealousy.

2. Argumentum ad pecuniam: My family can almost certainly afford to pay at least somewhat more than they intend. This is where the "spoiled rich white kid" thing comes in - I know that the family income is somewhere between $100k and $150k, but nothing specific. On the whole, my father is rather frugal (would it be rude to say "cheap"?) while my mother is less so (my hypothesis as to why is probably sexist). Interestingly, the inverse in true in their willingness to pay for college - dad is willing to pour in more, mom's viewpoint is more like teaching a bird to fly by dropping it out of the nest. I do have, for the record, one younger brother who will be going to college (hopefully - his grades kind of suck right now) in two years, but that shouldn't affect anything here and now.

3. Argumentum ex interrete: Looking it up on the internet, the suggestions from parents, students, and third parties alike for how much parents should pay for their keedz' college varies wildly from "nothing" to "everything and then some". I'm not sure if mine consulted any of these sources, or which ones I can trust

4. De quantitatibus reales: Under their compromise proposal, the parents will pay tuition and fees, and in exchange I am expected to fund what I will call the "not being homeless and starving" part with not much assistance from their rather minimal designated college savings account. In the end, my contribution equates to about $8,000 a year.

5. De penuria negotiorum: I am rather skeptical about the potential of earning that much money through a reasonable amount of work while attending school full-time. Assuming optimistically that I can find something paying $8 an hour, that equates to three hours a day, every day of the year. I'm not sure how many jobs there are that will pay that much over that many hours for someone with pretty much no skills or training. I don't object or consider it above my dignity to work, but I am concerned with whether the opportunity even exists, and whether it will be too much.

6. De possibilitate debiti: If all else fails (assuming I can neither sway my parents nor find an improbably good job), what are Bay12's recommendations on loans? I get that they essentially mean you are now bound to pay X amount of money for life, and that the remaining Y amount increases each year by virtue of interest. Now, the job prospects for the majors I'm interested in suggest above-average probability for employment for about $50k a year fairly shortly after graduating. From my logic, taking out a small-ish loan seems viable, given that an hour then would earn three, four times as much money as an hour now, in effect reducing the overall "time cost" of school by two-thirds.

So, I am looking for two things. One, did I make any serious errors which affect the strength of my reasoning? Two, what are your suggestions for this spoiled rich white kid? Cajole hard, work hard, or loan hard?

EDIT: Upon kj1225's suggestion, I have decided to reverse the rules. It is now the job of us Descanners to resist the nonbelievers in their efforts to make an epic combo.

Roll To Dodge / Draw to Dodge: Viva Las Vegas!
« on: November 16, 2013, 10:53:44 pm »
Welcome to the first (that I know of) Draw to Dodge game. Like a standard RtD, it utilizes random values to determine the success of a player's actions. Unlike a standard RtD, it uses playing cards rather than dice for this randomness. And what better journey to be determined by random cards than a trip from Flagstaff to Las Vegas along The Road Formerly Known As Route 66?

As this is both my first RtD and certifiably rather complicated compared with the standard, I am open to any questions before the beginning of the application process. Particularly feel free to ask about defining the skills; I figured they would be self-explanatory, but if you have a question, please ask. I'd like to keep this slightly dark but also comedic; as part of this, you can, and are encouraged to, push people into the particle beam, among other things.

Curses / Alternative CCS Options [Suggestion]
« on: September 07, 2012, 05:33:25 pm »
I thought of two possible options concerning CCS presence, in addition to the current have-it-or-don't.

1. The CCS starts with similar power to the LCS, and similarly grows with time, instead of starting out strong. Probably easier, but given that it would be optional, I don't see a problem with that.

2. The CCS is a reactionist group that forms when the country is suitably liberal, as a true opposite of the LCS forming when the country turns strongly conservative. They gain power fast at this point, but don't trouble you in the early game.

General Discussion / Ironic Appreciation of Turkish Star Wars Club
« on: July 06, 2012, 08:41:11 pm »
For those who don't know, "Dünyayı Kurtaram Adam", AKA "The Man Who Saved the World", AKA "Turkish Star Wars", is a 1982 Turkish adventure movie. It is also consistently considered one of the worst movies of all time, not just because it steals large amounts of music and footage from various sources, mainly Star Wars: A New Hope, but also because its story and dialogue (even when translated) makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

But I am founding this forum-based club of people who think this film is so bad it's good, like me. Call me an ironic hipster, but what the hell.

Discuss.

(Here you can watch it, badly subtitled into English, online.)

Curses / The Convention Center
« on: March 07, 2012, 05:05:34 pm »
I was just thinking about possible new locations for LCS, and then I thought about a "dynamic" location: the Convention Center.
It would be dynamic in that not only would the available conventions depend on laws, but also circulate around the year. Each one would be anywhere from a day to a week long. Each one would be announced with a newspaper headline (Liberal Guardian or other) before it arrived. Some ideas:

(Note: The issue ranks listed with ^ are minimum, where L+ is the top. Those with v are below)

Gaming/Computer Convention: C^ Free Speech, C+^ Privacy Rights. Full of programmers, gamers, and something along the lines of "nerd". About even political spread, slightly more liberals.

Furry Convention: M^ Free Speech, M^ Animal Rights. Full of "furries". Primarily liberal.

Science-Fiction Convention: Always there. Sells "phasers", which, like the "Mithril" armor, look impressive but don't actually work. Even political spread.

Car Convention: Always there. Sells various types of cars. Mechanics of all political alignments, as well as conservative businesspeople, can be found here.

Gun Convention: Mv Gun Control. Sells guns, especially the harder-to-obtain (but legal) ones. Obviously, most people here are conservatives, namely police and the various types of white trash. At C+ Gun Control and Cv Military Spending, it becomes the Weapons Expo, with a lot of heavily armed cops, mercenaries, and soldiers.

Business Convention: Mv Corporate Law, Lv Tax Structure. Full of businesspeople and, at C+ Corporate Law, their mercenary bodyguards.

Curses / How does your LCS roll? Modded or not?
« on: November 19, 2011, 11:32:25 am »
I currently have the LCS gen mod, with some changes of my own, such as legalizing the MG at C+ and allowing you to buy it.
Also the flamer.

Curses / LCS enlightened me.
« on: November 14, 2011, 04:09:33 pm »
I used to be a moderate. But after playing LCS (and talking on the Minecraft Forum general off topic), I have become liberal.
Still not elite liberal, though.

Curses / Just a little idea I had.
« on: October 13, 2011, 07:10:21 pm »
1. Make an issue concerning servitude. In C+ society, slavery is allowed under a different name, and freeing servants should be the same as stealing.

Curses / Suggestion: Siege Counterattack
« on: October 12, 2011, 02:20:09 pm »
So, the SWAT teamed closed in on my newspaper HQ. The guys in there were unarmed and nonviolent, and were wanted for other crimes.
My question: Why can't I send my army-equipped squad to counterattack?

I for one got 75 in one day... without even committing any crimes.

So, in the original Tarn Adams LCS you could choose which issue to discuss. But IIRC it was just on the surface. What I propose is that different NPC types should response differently to different issues, and you should be able to choose the issue. Same thing for your cable/AM studio jackings. For example, a liberal musician or author might care about freedom of speech; a moderate female might be more interested in woman's rights than a moderate male; low-level workers like janitors might care about worker's rights.

Ideas?
