AAVE might be more academically accepted, but as far as I can tell the popular usage of "Ebonics" in the first place comes from its use in the '90s Oakland Ebonics controversy. Granted, IIRC, the pro-AAVE side in that debate also claimed black people were genetically predisposed to speak "Ebonics" and that it was a different language from English.
